Boyle Edttor-in-Chile Dedicated To Mr. Joseph Miller Assistant Professor Of Speech Few men have the ability to mix classroom objectivity with true friendship and concern, Joseph Miller has this quality. He conducts his classes profes- sionally. He maintains an open door policy for consultation and advice. He is deeply concerned with the well-being of the John Carroll community. He has successfully mixed the wisdom of age with the drive and desire of youth. We are honored to dedicate this eighty-fifth edition of the Carillon to such a remarkable man. Since that time, John Carroll has continued to grow both physically and in quality of education. Today, eighty-five years later, John Carroll is faced with the same human and financial prob- lems that all of us must face. The drive and determination that was present in 1886 is still present and will continue to make John Carroll a successful tower of higher education and personal development, oun neg aapitnd POT — jd $ 4 E Ss id 4 = « f x be 4 “ER a ee ee ta ee LORS BE BERTON cell + cog nde we ¥ ‘ af THOMAS L. The program begins early in the Fall with football and runs almost continually until Spring. This year the football crown was won by the University Club who managed to sustain only one loss and that against a powerful team from Delta Alpha Theta. Basketball went to a previously unknown independent team, the Original Dolan Goril- las, who proved to be too rough for any of the organizational teams, The intramural track championship also went to an independent team, the Chicago Club, This year a single elimination baseball tournament was grabbed by a seemingly un- beatable Delta Alpha Theta squad who really didn't face a worthy enough opponent. In the individual events Keenen and Malone won in doubles handball, Keenen in singles handball, Dizenzo and Larkin in doubles pad- dleball, Roach in singles paddleball, and Selek in the ping pong tournament. 7) Che ANA. Boyle — Editor-in-Chief This has been a trying year for the Carillon, We began publication late in the season. The 1970 Carillon did not arrive until April, 1971. Financial problems plagued us, The 1970 issue was at one time deemed the last issue of the Carillon publication, Another tradition almost died. But that did not stop us. Through the incomparable efforts of Jack Thompson and his staff, we are back in publication. When all has been completed, the 1971 Carillon might likely establish a record. We hope that this issue will be the first year- book to establish or stage a sell-out in at least a decade, The members of the staff have worked diligently in their effort to prepare a quality publication. Time will tell if we have succeeded, As we submit to you the pictorial record of 1971 at John Carroll it is our fervent hope that the work of the Soc iety of Jesus, the lay faculty, staff, students, board of directors and friends of the University will some day publish the centennial issue of the Carillon. Finally we thank our friends who guided us through the long dark days. Staff Daniel E. Boyle - Editor Thomas Gurgol - University Life Victor Sossi - Sports Michael V.
