GRAUEL In Memoriam “If life is not eternal, Neither again is sorrow; Death’s rising sun dissolves it Like midst in the morning sky.” MOST REV. EDWARD F. HOBAN GEORGE FATHER LAWRENCE JOSEPH MONVILLE, S.J. has been with John Carroll University since 1943 when he joined the staff as an instructor in physics. His drive and interest have made the department almost unique in a liberal arts college. Today one out of ten students is graduated with a physics major; contrasting with the graduating class of 1942 which had one physics major and a staff of three instructors. Father Monville’s warm personality and accomplishments have generated the respect and affection of all his students. We on the Carillon staff are proud to dedicate this book to his outstand- ing work. ease aR Si, sari —— T= PTET A a Ce oe eT TY Oe ptabaiabiee: iii ae MOST REV. CLARENCE E. ELWELL MOST REV. JOHN J. Dunn, Hugh O'Neill | 40) CO Ten years ago a young, vibrant Jesuit was ordered to Cleveland by his superiors to assume the presidency of John Carroll Uni- versity. Since then the school and the man have become sy- nonymous. Four major buildings—a gymnasium, a_ student activities center, Murphy Hall dormitory, and the Grasselli Library —have been completed during his administration. Still, our president is not content to rest on past accomplishments. The start of the new science building has opened a new phase of development. We may only hope that Fr. Dunn’s “second” Decade of Progress is as successful as the first. 15 JOSEPH O. SCHELL, S.J. A.M., S.T.L., Dean of the College of Arts Sciences ARTHUR J. Under the able leadership of Tom Murphy and his fellow officers, the Union reached that goal. New areas for Student- Faculty-Administration discussion were opened and understanding pursued on each level. It was a truly fine Carroll Senate that rewrote its entire Constitu- tion, making each point agree with the purpose and goal of the body. 1966-1967 was a year of progress for the entire Carroll Union. Chosen by chapter members and the President of the University, students belonging to the Jesuit Honor Society sponsor lectures, informal discussions, and classics of the motion picture industry. All of these activities are aimed at the intellectual and cultural development of the entire university. Beginning with a lecture during Orientation Week and end- ing with the Honors Convocation in May, the 1966-67 academic year saw many important contributions by Alpha Sigma Nu. With Sal Catanese as president, the chapter continued its fine programs of student involvement. | Alpha SiGma nu S. Catanese, T. White, T. Murphy, T. Grace, M. Host, J. Heery, P. Neman, R. Tomc, R. Guest lecturers included Mrs. Raymond Ludhe, who spoke on “French Music” and Dr. Rene’ Febien, Fons a who gave to the Club his “Impressions of Contemporary France”. hy In addition to the French movie “Passion for Life”, the French a ie | Club also had its annual Christmas Party. The biggest project this year however, was the annual Mardi Gras Dance, which was sponsored by the French Club in conjunction with the Spanish Club. Ruben Dario offers under the leadership of Mr. Nion Iorillo a number of lectures and Spanish-American films each semester, the purpose being the cultivation of an interested student’s knowledge of Spanish culture. The annual Mardi Gras, sponsored jointly with the French Club’s linguists, was the usual pre-Lenten social success. They began the year by providing half-time entertainment at all of the home foot- “Wasn't there a song — ‘Don’t Fence Me In?’ ?” ball games as well as two of the away games; they also enlivened school spirit by playing at some of the pre-game rallies. When the football season had ended, the University Band moved into their concert schedule. For the first time, they performed three concerts, a tradition they hope to continue in the future. The Band also performed several selections for Parents’ Weekend. Besides performing as the University Band, they also perform as the John Carroll ROTC Band and during the past year they took part in the Washington’s Day Parade in downtown Cleveland as well as the annual Federal Inspection. The year was highlighted by a trip to participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival held in Washington, D. C. In this parade the Band marched in their ROTC dress uniforms, but represented the entire University. Guiding the Band over the past year were Mr. Jack T. This | eventful year was undoubtedly the most active in the Club’s eighty year history. Besides hosting such old friends as Barat College at Lake Forest, Illinois, the Club introduced Maryville College from St. Louis, and Our Lady of Cincinnati College to the | Carroll campus. “Tour ’67” included a television appearance in St. Louis and a concert with Maryville College, succeeded by other concerts with Saint Xavier and Mundelein Colleges, | both in Chicago. In addition to these customary formal concerts, the Glee Club provided entertainment for several Cleveland banquets and Alumni functions. Concluding the year’s activities was the cutting of a new record, thus successfully fulfilling the Glee Club’s persistent endeavor of distinguished service to John Carroll. The Glee Club at Fr. A motto for this campus organization may well be: “At home on Land, Sea, or in the Air”. The N.D.T.A., a Chapter of an International Association of Military Personnel and Civilians, is devoted to the study of the problems relating to transportation in the defense of the United States. 78 A.U.S.A. is one of the excellent methods that Army Advanced Corps, R.O.T.C. It’s the Advanced Corps Officers and their Senior and Junior Sponsors. With the intention of upholding a tradition of excellence in the First Regi- ment, Company M commenced the year under the experienced leadership of Capt. David M. Burdelak. Veteran members had scarcely returned to the University before they began once again to display their usual spirit and enthusiasm in activating the Company for the coming year. Under Pledge Officer Frank Wardega, the pledge program was soon in full swing. The most comprehensive program in recent years, it included a Big Brother system for academic help to pledges, a pledge car wash, and a Halloween “trick-or-treat” for a local orphanage. Drill training, with that “little bit better” M-1 sharpness, paid off as both pledge teams took awards at the First Battalion Pledge Drill Meet. The program climaxed with the initiation of twelve new members at the Initiation Ceremony and Dance in January. 80 “Was that one of the left o r one to the right?” L. to R. 1st Row: J. Robinson, L. Spath, dean of the Graduate School has been named president of St. Francis College in Biddeford, Maine. St. Francis is a co- educational Franciscan institution which is rapidly growing. When Dr. Spath leaves John Carroll in August, he will end a career which began in 1950 as a lecturer in philosophy. He is a native Clevelander and a graduate of St. Ignatius High School and John Carroll (A.B. 1948). He continued his studies at St. Louis University, receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. All three degrees are in the field of Latin. Dr. Spath’s accomplish- ments both in professional appointments at the University as director of the department of classical languages (1958-67), dean of the graduate school (1962-67), and coordinator of research (1963-67); in other University serv- ices as moderator of the Carroll Union (1958-62), moderator of the Carroll News (1950-55), the Carroll Quarterly (1950-55), and the Carillon (1950- 67); he has served as secretary (1956-58) and president (1958) for the Lay Faculty Association and as vice president of t he John Carroll University Alumni Association reflect the tremendous contribution he has given to the Carroll community. Dean Spath’s personal achievements in independent publications, the delivery of scholarly papers, and recognition within professional organiza- tions are numerous. It is significant that besides being a member of the American Philogical Association, and the Classical Association of the Middle West and South; he was named to the Executive Board of the Ohio Classical Conference in 1960 after having served as secretary-treasurer (1957-59) and president (1959-60). Those at Carroll who have benefited from his teaching ability and his friendship regret to see him depart, and yet are sure that this new oppor- tunity will be a fitting challenge for his talents as teacher and administrator. 86 FROM a MEAGER BEGINNING. .. 87 New, spacious Grasselli Library J.
