X X Z , 5 ,f I 0 ' z . Dedication Politics is not a science, as many of our pro- fessors iniagine, but an art.-Bismafrck W'hen Edward Coleman Reilley was gradu- ated from John Carroll University in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, in both retrospect and prospect learning and scholarship were his. In retrospect: a diploma, granted and in- scribed mavgna- cum- laudofq the Msgr. Pfeil Gold Medal, awarded for the highest grades in philo- sophical studiesg the Senior Scholarship Gold Medal. An academic success as a philosophy major, history and Latin minor, he could reflect fur- ther upon his accomplishments as violinist with the University orchestra, French horn tooter for the band, organist for chapel services. In prospect? A master of arts degree in history from John Carroll University in 19333 the doctor of philosophy degree earned at VVestern Reserve University and granted in 1940, appointment to the John Carroll Uni- versity faculty as an instructor in history in 1935. Versed in his academic disciplines of history, political science, and government, versatile in imparting his instruction, Dr. Reilley would teach European and American History, Ameri- can Federal, State, a11d Municipal Govern- mentg Economics and Business Administra- tiong naval history and strategy. And in 1957 the culmination: appointment-Director of the Department of Governmental Administration. No venerator ot the shihboleths of politics, unimpressed hy the traditional, hut often facile interpretations of history, his is not the arid scholarship ot' dusty data, hut the continually questioning, re-evaluating, realistic analyses ot' men, their motives, and their deeds. Comhining the skill of scholarship with the artfulness ot' wit, he spikes sham and penetrates pretense, erecting in their stead solidly-grounded and factually accurate constructs ot' history and civic administration.
