Dedication Politics is not a science, as many of our pro- fessors iniagine, but an art.-Bismafrck W'hen Edward Coleman Reilley was gradu- ated from John Carroll University in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, in both retrospect and prospect learning and scholarship were his. In retrospect: a diploma, granted and in- scribed mavgna- cum- laudofq the Msgr. Pfeil Gold Medal, awarded for the highest grades in philo- sophical studiesg the Senior Scholarship Gold Medal. An academic success as a philosophy major, history and Latin minor, he could reflect fur- ther upon his accomplishments as violinist with the University orchestra, French horn tooter for the band, organist for chapel services. In prospect? A master of arts degree in history from John Carroll University in 19333 the doctor of philosophy degree earned at VVestern Reserve University and granted in 1940, appointment to the John Carroll Uni- versity faculty as an instructor in history in 1935. Versed in his academic disciplines of history, political science, and government, versatile in imparting his instruction, Dr. Reilley would teach European and American History, Ameri- can Federal, State, a11d Municipal Govern- mentg Economics and Business Administra- tiong naval history and strategy. And in 1957 the culmination: appointment-Director of the Department of Governmental Administration. No venerator ot the shihboleths of politics, unimpressed hy the traditional, hut often facile interpretations of history, his is not the arid scholarship ot' dusty data, hut the continually questioning, re-evaluating, realistic analyses ot' men, their motives, and their deeds. Comhining the skill of scholarship with the artfulness ot' wit, he spikes sham and penetrates pretense, erecting in their stead solidly-grounded and factually accurate constructs ot' history and civic administration. A memher ot the Ohio Academy ot' Tlistory and the American Society l'or Iluhlic Admini- stratgion, Dr. lteillcy has published articles in .4 Y 2 Edward C. The reorganization of campus groups, football rallies, mixers, and convocations, signal the start of another year. Registration, orientation, and confusion, is typified by the first year men as they make their adjustment to college life. Hello Week, Kangaroo Court, and the Push Ball, further molds the new class into Men of Carroll. :i21f,iIf?gS'122:- 2.3: . One of the more recalcitrant defendants is restrained. The peers await formal sentencing. In keeping with the tradition of Hello Week, the mock Kangaroo Court convened on Thursday night in the practice field to hear the case of the sophomore vs. freshman class. The defendants were charged with various infractions of the freshman code, such as failure to observe the beanie statute. Court ap' pointed prosecutors read the charge to Chief Poten- tate Warren Arthur. The defendant was then given a brief moment to enter his plea of innocence before the sentence was passed. Needless to say, the sopho- mores won a majority of the biased decisions. Police officers, consisting of the more athletic members of the sophomore class, maintained a somewhat orderly court room atmosphere despite the frequent insur- rections. After the eggs, water paint, syrup and shaving cream were removedg the frosh all knew the ordeal as one of the exciting experiences which molded them into college life. With suitcases and trunks and bringing grey flannels, tennis rackets, golf clubs, letter sweaters and pic- tures of her we arrived. We came from as far as away as Aruba in South America and as close as around the corner on Meadowbrook. In size we ranged from Bobby Kilbourne to Tommy Donovan. Within a few days we were injected into as- sembly line after assembly line, lectured to, ordered about, look at depreciatively, lectured to, and finally told you'll buy that beanie and like it. We vindicated ourselves from the ordeal of the first weeks when we shoved the sopho- mores all over the push-ball field. Our fresh- men football team went undefeated. The Mili- tary Ball that year was our first big college dance and Richard Maltby made it memor- able. That was the year of the big snow and when spring finally came it was for those in Pacelli to accept Fr. Schell's dictum on sun- bathing on the roof. As innocent frosh we discovered that at Notre Dame in Cleveland the students only look like football players. Back in '56 Jim Shannon was a kid from Chicago who lived off campus and belonged to the P.R.'s. The year ended, not with a bang but a whimper, as final exams took their toll. We had changed far more than we knew, not until returning home did we realize just how great our experience had been. Then a sum- mer all too short, and back to Carroll, sans caravan this time. H . i Y V 3 ,-Wy.. dv Pacelli Hall, with its erratic showers, mid- night bowling, and never-ending curfew battle were soon all too familiar. As sopho- mores, '60 was the first class in Carroll his- tory not to lose the push-ball contest. The Beave went back on the prowl. For the most part the Dorm was quiet as Pandemonium. We resumed the mighty ordeal of dismal din- ners amidst butter battles. Against Xavier we christened our sports palace. The Brown Baggers renewed their pinochle pursuits. The sophomores, search for a major was typified by the first of countless changes by Dave Marr. In our junior year we moved over to the Bernet zoo and stocked the cages with The Snake, The Rat, The Wish, The Bear, The Stark, The Bison and of course, the Beaver. During the year the class of '60 said goodby to Fr. Millor and his cigar-smoke as keeper. The Beave went back on the prowl. We lost a friend that year. The members of '60 were seen frequently at Sylvestros but never on the Thursday night. Off campus parties were still a rarity but by the time they graduated the class of '60 would change that tradition. There was a rash of expeditions to Lake Erie College. Jim Shannon became the acknowl- edged political boss on campus. The Campus Commandoes, battle-hardened after summer camp, led the return of the sen- iors for their final fling. The gridiron on- slaught started against Bethany and with the Jaw showing the way our football team rol- led over everybody to the first undefeated, untied team in the history of Carroll. Home- coming was the biggest and best yet. We pointed all year for Reserve and none of us, or Eddie Finnegan will ever forget Schweick- ert on that day. In addition some of '60 will always vividly remember the day before the Reserve game. The man with the keys to the kingdom of Carroll, George Growney, en- deared himself to every frosh. Some members of '60 contemplated the al- tar with a certain wishfullness. Others mere- ly contemplated. Tri-Ad becomes a familiar term and the smoother set held suite parties for those who liked gracious living. Keim came through in the clutch and our basketball team elbowed their way to the best record since 1921. We retained our habit of winning in Stunt Nite due in part to the sympathy exhibited in the skit by Tim Stra- der. We got Elgart for the prom and the tem- po of that week-end was carried through Sen- ior WVeek. Nothing here has been said of exams, orals, comps and other such unimportant blemishes, on the understanding that what is painfully obvious to all is best swept under the carpet. On the other hand, much has been left out of here by necessity and discretion. We'll never forget the beginning and it really hasn't ended. So long gentlemen. See you twenty-five from now. f.-............4,.... e .W - .lg J.-fx ' 1...--. ,, , Arts and Sciences Charles J. Acker South Euclid, Ohio AB Francis C. Aquila Cleektowaga, N. Y. CARROLL 45 - BETHANY 0 Before a cheering crowd at Hosford Field, the Streaks romped to a 45-0 victory in the opener against Bethany College of West Virginia. Bethany was limited to only 125 yards as opposed to Carroll's 489. Leading the charge was quarterback Jerry O' Mal- ley who netted 153 yards for the day. Bill Marks, who gained 86 yards in seven carries and scored two touchdowns, was the leading ground gainer of the day. Bob Fitzgerald also stood out in snagging four passes for 74 yards and one touchdown. CARROLL 33 -WAYNESBURG 14 Carroll won its second game of the season as it rallied in the second and fourth quarters to amass 413 yards. Halfback Frank Walton and fullback Lou Thomas each tallied twice. Halfback Jack Green hauled in a 60 yard pass from quarterback Pete Pucher to account for the Carroll scoring. Waynes- burg was held to a minus eleven yards on the ground and 160 in the air for a 149 yard total. Lou Thomas attempts to buck a strong Tarter line for the necessary yardage. AK W . Even though rain fell through- out the whole game, causing a total of twenty fumbles, Coach Ray's squad outplayed the Greenville Club. Touch- downs were scored by Bill Marks, whose two-yard plunge climaxed a forty-yard drive in the second quarter and another by Pete Pucher on a forty-yard rollout which ended a sixty- five-yard march in the third period. CARROLL 20-WASHINGTON St JEFFERSON 0 Carroll wrapped up its first undefeated season in thirty- nine years of football by downing Washington and Jefferson 20-0. The muddy, slippery field didn't prevent the Streaks from scoring their fifth shutout victory of the season. Bill Marks dashed fifteen yards in the first period to climax a seventy-yard drive in eight plays. Minutes later the Streaks drove seventy-five yards in eleven plays with Frank Walton scampering the final five yards. In the final period, a re- covered fumble enabled Carroll to put the game on ice, as Jerry Schweickert cracked three yards for the final tally. The theme of the presentation explored the endless dra- matic conflicts a Catholic encounters in trying to love God and be happy simultaneously. Centered on the dilemma of an eternal triangle, the play was focused against a background of dead goodness. A standing room only crowd packed the auditorium early, and their anticipation was fully rewarded as all five skits showed good preparation and clever originality. As tradition will have it, the seniors won, the juniors were second, and the evening college was third. The freshmen initiated the evening with a skit depicting the typical freshmen entering Carroll and being introduced to the ways of the school by the sophomores. The sophomores added international flavor as they pre- sented The Kremlin visits Carroll . Third on the agenda was the evening college with a strong entry in Yogi Bear Goes to College . The junior wes- tern Gunfight at O.K. Carroll and Johnny Yokum goes to College by the class of '60, rounded out the entertainment, and, to use a theatrical expression, left them rolling in the aisles . Dan Van Belleghem ably directed the whole evening, and the highpoint came as Dan presented the winner's trophy to John Conomy, director of the senior skit. The Series was initiated to present to the students, alumni and community, en- tertainment opportunities that are not other- wise possible. Early in October, the program was initiated by the ever-popular Little Singers Of Paris who presented a repertoire from Gregorian chant to popular song. Carefully chosen and masterfully trained the group has appeared before the late Pope Pius XII and the Presi- dent and Mrs. Eisenhower. A well-known Broadway and Hollywood ac- tress, Miss Julie Haydon appeared in a pro- gram based on the works of George Jean Nathan, G. B. Shaw, Tennessee Williams, and William Saroyan.
