PRESIDENT Now that you have completed your college education, I trust that you can discern one ideal we have constantly kept before you during your years at John Carroll: the achievement of excellence in all that you do. The ideal of excellence we have proposed to you is not approached if one rests content with surpassing one’s fellows in specific trials of intellectual strength. One may win many such contests without really perfecting himself as a man. Genuine excellence is attained only if one can honestly say that he has used all his personal resources to the best of his ability. Only then will you be able to meet the challenges that await you in a manner that is worthy of a graduate of a Jesuit institution of higher learning. It is our hope that, as you review your years at John Carroll, you will recognize our effort to inculcate this high standard of excellence. Our success as educators will be judged by the efforts you make to live up to this ideal and to carry it out in all the areas of your life. Dedication “ . . . the theater is a scale whereon are weighed not only the interpreters of ideas, but the very ideas themselves—the values in printed patterns of behavior, the hidden experiences, the sug- gested designs for living, the worth of hidden notions . . . Out of all this raw material must be manufactured a product which spectators can bear away with them for their present diversion and their future good.” FRANK J. WIESS AM. I f the University, in the words of our President, is “. the arena in which the willing student meets the able teacher in appropriate surroundings Professor Frank J. Wiess has made of _ his classroom an intellectual theater in which he weighs and interprets the ideas of man, scrutinizing his foibles, mocking his pretensions, applauding his eminences. In composition or in literature, in poetry or in drama, his saber- swift, stiletto-sharp analyses of the written word have a single, unswerving purpose: the formation of students with sharpened rhetorical skills, sensitized literary appetites, refined artistic tastes. Chiding sometimes, whimsical often, patient always, he surrounds his students with diversion for their present encouragement, en- lightenment for their future good. For twenty-three years Professor Wiess has commuted to Carroll from his home in Parma. In all that time “Senator” Wiess, as his colleagues call him, never has lost his temper, never has lifted his voice in expostulation or argument, never has lost the scholarly The two deans of the Department of English, professors Aloysius A. Bungart and Frank J. Wiess, exchange remi- niscences. Colleagues and comrades for more than two decades, the two expect to continue their companionship despite Professor Bungart’s retirement in June after 40 years in John Carroll classrooms. —Frank J. Wiess “The Vitalizing Force in the Theater” dignity which fits him like a toga. Indeed he is so soft-spoken that his words tiptoe on down-shod feet. Shelley had in mind such a man as Professor Wiess when he wrote: “ that content surpassing wealth The sage in contemplation found, and walked with inner glory crowned . . . ? A charter member of the Ohio Catholic Poetry Society, Professor Wiess is a poet in his own right, singing, like the lover in Twelfth Night, high or low as occasion offers. In the precious moments he can steal from his beloved books, Professor Wiess is a horticulturist, raising flowers, vegetables, and herbs. In the last he is a national authority. From anise to woodruff he knows their culinary virtues and uses them to create a hundred mouth-watering salads and dishes. The staff is extremely proud to dedicate the 1959 edition of the Carillon to Professor Frank J. Wiess: bard, gentleman, scholar. ars ————————————S Board of Advisory ‘Trustees The Lay Board of Advisory Trustees is a consulting body appointed by the Very Rev. Hugh E. Dunn, S. It acts as a vital link between the administration and the student body. The general aims of the organ- ization are: (1) to develop a sense of responsibility among the stu- dents of the University; (2) to de- velop the powers of self govern- ment; (3) to aid in the planning of all student activities. The Union believes in the posi- tive approach to better student- administration relationships. Its members strive to achieve more than just a negative criticism of the administration’s regulations. A stiff schedule of drilling, inspections, and just plain hard work enabled the PR’s to gain these honors. Members also attended a number of social activities during the year, including an annual dinner dance. Carroll’s crack drill outfit demon- strated their precision marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and at the annual Federal Inspection. Cap- tain Robert Wanek was faculty mod- erator for the group. Frank Conry is decorated by Colonel LaCour at the annual P.R. frolic. NDTA members are welcomed to New York by Colonel Dannis. This student organization, estab- lished in 1953, is a chapter of an international association of military personnel and civilians. Its purpose is the collection and dissemination of useful knowledge concerning transportation. The Association also tries to foster a spirit of goodwill and cooperative endeavor among its members. This year Carroll’s 138-man group was named “Student Chapter of the Year for 1958.” Officers for the year included: Dennis Fagan, president; Howard Pugh, secretary; and Robert Sho- wiak, treasurer. Eisele Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach Frank G. Belanich Golf and Ass’t Football Coach Herbert C. Eisele, Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach, took over the Blue Streak reins in 1947. Previously he compiled nineteen years as Head Coach at Cathedral Latin (Cleve.) High School. His record there was an incredible 130 wins, 33 losses, and 18 ties, including an undefeated streak of 35 games. He brought this winning spirit with him as his record of 57 wins, 33 losses, and 5 ties indicates. In 1957 Herb piloted the first PAC football championship team here at Carroll. After 32 seasons as a coach, Herb retired in February to devote more time to his growing duties as Director of Athletics. Sil Cornachione, Head Basketball Coach, following his graduation from Carroll, joined the Benedictine (Cleve.) High School as Assistant Baseball, Football, and Basketball Coach. After two successful years, he re- turned to his Alma Mater to help coach football and basketball. He was named Head Basketball Coach in 1954 and since has amassed a respectable record. In the first year of the PAC he led his cagers to the runner-up spot and thus primed them for the championships won in 1957-1958 and 1958-1959. Carl F. Torch Track and Freshman Football and Basketball Coach 88 e For three successive seasons, Carl Torch guided the Freshman football teams to undefeated and untied marks and the PAC championships. Under Carl’s expert coaching, Carroll’s golf team has risen to the stature of being one of the most feared teams in the state. Besides capturing the PAC crown in 1956, 1957, and 1958 seasons, his teams finished third in the State Tournament in 1956 and second in the same tourney in 1957. Frank “Bill” Belanich, internal line coach, started his coaching career with Dayton Univ, in 1924. After a brief tour in private business, he re-entered the coaching field at Cathedral Latin (Cleve.) High School in 1943. Four years later he assumed the responsibility of turning out fine linemen at Carroll. Richard Iliano, trainer, is responsible for keeping the Streaks in top fighting form. Dick’s qualifications are numerous, but briefly these are a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Baldwin-Wallace, a master’s degree in body mechanics from Western Reserve, and a charter membership in the Ohio-Michigan-Indiana Training Association. Zore At the close of each school year the CARILLON is published by a small] number of stu- dents for the entire student body. This publication requires many hours of complex work in- cluding: photography, layout, composition, art work, engraving, printing and binding. Because of the complexities of much of this work we, the student staff, must call on many persons off- campus for aid and advice. Our sincere thanks are due to the following men without whose co-operation this book could not have been published. — RICCO LEANA, The May Company, Photographic Studio — SID MENDOLSON, National Convention Photo Service — RAY MILETI, The Cleveland Engraving Company — JOSEPH FOGG, The Judson Printing Company — RALPH BENZ, The S. K. Smith Company — FRANCES HECKER, Little King Bindery Company In publishing the 1959 CARILLON we have made every effort to put into words Ee poe a history of a year of life at John Carroll University. The book is written for you, the reader. It is our sincere hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed writing it. William A. Burian Editor-in-Chief John T.
