if edlcaho n . . . -.W 'tMA-..-uw , A.M., Ph.D. PRESIDENT .YEVEB four centuries ago the intrepid Inigo de Loyola founded the Society of lesus. 11211 ' Educator, soldier of Christ, spiritual architect, holy founder: his successors have militantly and zealously furthered Ignatius' determination to do all things: Ad majorem Dei gloriam. At lohn Carroll the phenomenal growth of the University in the lgnatian tradition and the consequent spread of Ignatian influence have reached a peak during the last decade. And it is no accidental consequence that this growth has coincided with the tenure of our President, the Bev. Frederick E. Welfle, S.l. Father Welfle came to the President's office in 1946, a most difficult and trying time for a college administrator. Father Welfle's first full-time civilian student body totalled 150 men. At this same time the obligations of the University had risen to over half a million dollars. Fortified by vision, faith, and courage, the heritage of his lesuit training, Father Welfle undertook to build, not alone in the physical sense, but in the spiritual as Well, a Uni- versity worthy of the best lesuit traditions. He inspired his colleagues, lay and lesuit, with the same zeal and enthusiasm, from the Cleveland community he secured from scores of men and women pledges of assist- ance, financial and moral. He created Carroll's first Lay Board of Trustees, he brought to the campus outstanding educators and leaders for special institutes and lectures, and he added to the faculty men outstanding in their fields. An eminent personage in civic circles, he became a familiar figure at the head table of gatherings in the Cleveland area. As Father Welfle reviews ten years of service he can see, as we do, the developing campus, the expanded student body, the growing corps of professors, the enlarged course offerings, the maturity of lohn Carroll as a community asset, but above all he can be proud of the realization that Carroll is producing, as never before, leaders of men. To Father Welfle, for his courage in the adversities of the Past, his faith in lohn Car- roll's Future, and his devotion to its Present, We gratefully and proudly dedicate the 1956 Carillon. g ,A , ' . x VERY REV. FREDERICK E. WELFLE SJ

in memoriam laid up for them . . Mrs Thomas F. Dolan When Mrs. Thomas Dolan was called to her eternal rest on February 4 the University suffered the loss of a patron, a benefactor, and an ardent advocate. That she was a woman of broad propensities for benevolent human- itarianism is manifested not only by her interest in lohn Carroll, but also by her service to the numerous charitable organizations which benefited from her zeal. In particular she was active in the Catherine Horstman Home Society, she was a Patron of Parmadale, and she was devoted to De Paul Infant Home. Dolan Hall, dedicated last September in her honor and that of her husband, Thomas F. Dolan, stands in abiding tribute to her generosity, in enduring memory of her name. . . .
