Za tb MOST REV. EDWARD F. HOBAN S.T.D., Ph.D., LL.D. The Diocese ot Cleveland has been bountiiully blessed with three outstanding religious leaders whcse provident guidance is manifest in their solicitous interest in both the spiritual and material Welfare of their people. Diocesan education, in particular, illustrates the thorough and prudent planning of these administrators. The Diocesan Board of Education is the second largest in the State ot Ohio, and it is possible for almost every Catholic elementary and high school student to receive the Catholic education which is his right. On the college level lohn Carroll University has played a large role in the Diocesan planning, and these religious leaders have regularly and generously assisted the University in its Work. The l956 Carillon pays tribute to these leaders. To the Most Bev. Edward F. Hoban, Archbishop-Bishop or Cleveland, and to the Most Rev. Floyd L. Begin, and the Most Rev. lohn l. Krol, Auxiliary Bishops, we extend our greetings and our gratitude. ' tu . J MOST REV. FLOYD L. BEGIN S.T.D., Ph.D., J.C.D. hm.f,-.- ,Aim - M ' v - ' -.,, U .Lg .r-, . -. I ,M - .' . M X, .'- 'K .. KROL S.T.D., J.C.D., LL.D. ,,,f--HCV if edlcaho n . . . -.W 'tMA-..-uw , A.M., Ph.D. PRESIDENT .YEVEB four centuries ago the intrepid Inigo de Loyola founded the Society of lesus. 11211 ' Educator, soldier of Christ, spiritual architect, holy founder: his successors have militantly and zealously furthered Ignatius' determination to do all things: Ad majorem Dei gloriam. At lohn Carroll the phenomenal growth of the University in the lgnatian tradition and the consequent spread of Ignatian influence have reached a peak during the last decade. And it is no accidental consequence that this growth has coincided with the tenure of our President, the Bev. Frederick E. Welfle, S.l. Father Welfle came to the President's office in 1946, a most difficult and trying time for a college administrator. Father Welfle's first full-time civilian student body totalled 150 men. At this same time the obligations of the University had risen to over half a million dollars. Fortified by vision, faith, and courage, the heritage of his lesuit training, Father Welfle undertook to build, not alone in the physical sense, but in the spiritual as Well, a Uni- versity worthy of the best lesuit traditions. He inspired his colleagues, lay and lesuit, with the same zeal and enthusiasm, from the Cleveland community he secured from scores of men and women pledges of assist- ance, financial and moral. He created Carroll's first Lay Board of Trustees, he brought to the campus outstanding educators and leaders for special institutes and lectures, and he added to the faculty men outstanding in their fields. An eminent personage in civic circles, he became a familiar figure at the head table of gatherings in the Cleveland area. As Father Welfle reviews ten years of service he can see, as we do, the developing campus, the expanded student body, the growing corps of professors, the enlarged course offerings, the maturity of lohn Carroll as a community asset, but above all he can be proud of the realization that Carroll is producing, as never before, leaders of men. To Father Welfle, for his courage in the adversities of the Past, his faith in lohn Car- roll's Future, and his devotion to its Present, We gratefully and proudly dedicate the 1956 Carillon. g ,A , ' . x VERY REV. FREDERICK E. WELFLE SJ priest professor president in memoriam laid up for them . . Mrs Thomas F. Dolan When Mrs. Thomas Dolan was called to her eternal rest on February 4 the University suffered the loss of a patron, a benefactor, and an ardent advocate. That she was a woman of broad propensities for benevolent human- itarianism is manifested not only by her interest in lohn Carroll, but also by her service to the numerous charitable organizations which benefited from her zeal. In particular she was active in the Catherine Horstman Home Society, she was a Patron of Parmadale, and she was devoted to De Paul Infant Home. Dolan Hall, dedicated last September in her honor and that of her husband, Thomas F. Dolan, stands in abiding tribute to her generosity, in enduring memory of her name. . . . But whoever praised a team that came in second? So this is in praise of the almost-winner, the nearly-champions. This is in praise of Mr. Two. Ask the winner of any race how good a competitor is Mr. Two. Ask Western Reserve, the first PAC Champion, how good a team was Iohn Carroll. The Red Cats will tell you that it was Iohn Carroll, pressing at their heels and threatening to overtake and pass them that made Reserve strive so determinedly to win. It was Mr. Two that made the PAC race so close. High-spirited, but inexperienced, fast, but small in both size and numbers, the Blue Streaks were an unknown quantity even to their coaches. So this is for you, Blue Streaks. This is for you, Mr. Two. This is for all the days that you tried tor first, but came in second. This is for all the times you thought nobody noticed. Falcon coaches told Carroll Coach Eisele that it was unbelievable that the Streaks had acquired such know-how after three short weeks of training. JOHN CARROLL 23-CASE TECH 6 The Streaks capitalized on two breaks to score twice in the final period and so hand a stubborn Case Tech squad a 21-6 setback before 2000 fans at Clarke Field. A bad pass from center set up the first of the last quarter scores, and the second resulted from a clever bit of legal thievery by Frank Singel. Englum, S.J., presents William Marks of Detroit with the John D. Connors Trophy awarded annually to the outstanding Freshman Football player. 110 ln the season opener against Case Tech playing conditions were so bad that at times it was Impossible to tell who was on what team, as in this photograph. The freshmen had scarcely finished registration before the athletes among them were checking out helmets and shoulder pads and climbing the hill be- hind the gymnasium for their first foot- ball practice at ICU. Eighty-four eager candidates represented the largest turn- out in the UniVersity's history. Besides capturing the first PAC Fresh- man crown the yearlings were unde- feated in three games, yielding only a safety. On a day when playing conditions were so poor that players found it almost impossible to gain yardage, the Freshmen pushed over one score to defeat Case 6-O. Next, a trip to Detroit resulted in a white- wash victory over Wayne, l3-O. Still unscored upon, the F rosh entered the Reserve game with nothing but re- venge on their minds for what the Bed Cats had done to the varsity. The Carroll Freshman won 26-2. The leading scorer was Halfback lack Toronski who tallied in all three games. Tom McCarthy, Frank Walton, and Bill Marks, Winner of the lohn D. Connors trophy, completed the backfield. Man- ning the forward wall on offense were lack Cregan and lack Hyland, endsg lerry Porter and lohn Schlegel, tacklesg Gene Morgan and Bill Burian, guardsg Lee Matthews, center. The two-platoon system afforded many players the opportunities to dem- onstrate their talents. The defensive standouts were Toronski, Walton, Marks, Dan Stringer, Hyland, Porter, Morgan, and lim liovanazzo. Bill Marks switches from his usual running game to hurl a long one as a Western Reserve player desperately attempts to stop him. Even the bench area was flooded!
