Mr. Martin designed and built the backdrop and panels that were used as stage curtains. They looked great! SCHOOL LITURGIES Everyone is silent as Father Hill walks in to celebrate the liturgy. The choir sings praise to God. Liturgy is a very important part of our life at John Carroll. The liturgy brings us together as one large family to celebrate what is really important to us at John Carroll, our love of God and His love for us. EXPLORING OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE It was close to Thanksgiving and an appropriate time to ex- plore our American heritage, and what better way than look- ing and listening to the develop- ment of American music. Mr. Bill Martin, our local chemistry teacher, gathered together some of Birmingham's finest old-time musicians to help us learn about the evolution of American folk music. Jim Cauthen, an electrical engineer and fiddler extraordinaire, entertained us with a fiddle tune from the Civil War era while his wife Joyce, a folklorist and author, beat straws” or played fiddlesticks. Joyce Cauthen also clogged while Ricky Stone, local proprietor of Fretted In- struments, played the fretless banjo. Susan Haley delighted us with songs and her lap dulcimer. Susan is an artist-in-residence for Blount County. Bill Martin played an 1800's instrument, the autoharp. Some of our students got in on the act and demonstrated one of the main uses of early American music, dance. Five couples danced George' Washington's favorite, the Virginia Reel. The assembly was a great success. It was fun, entertaining, and educational too! Greg Martin and Amor Guevara dance to the Virginia Reel loyce Cauthen demonstrates clogging. Mr. Berg introduces the musicians. )im Cauthen plays a tune on his fiddle. Many students of John Carroll performed songs by their favorite rock groups. Some of the acts included The Bee Gees, Lisa Lisa, Ready for the World, and many more. The winners were The Blues Brothers, who won a cash prize of fifty dollars. Coming in se- cond, Devo received twenty-five dollars, and The Dream Team, in third place, received a cash prize of fifteen dollars. The contest was a huge success and was enjoyed by all. It brought forth from the depths of our unconsciousness the realization of life's brevity and uncertain- ty. Joy McDowell Death always hits us unexpectedly and chips away at our heart and soul. There is no way to avoid it and no easier way to accept it than the way we do. Laura Pittman Forgive my grief for one removed. Thy creature, whom I found so fair. I trust he lives in thee, and there I find him worthier to be loved. Letting go is never easy, but when I thought of how blessed I was to know him, I wouldn't have traded anything for the time we had. Anne Hicks It's hard to put feel- ings on a piece of paper, but our feelings here at John Carroll are: 'Mr. Houston, we love you and we will miss you dearly!' You will never be forgotten. Scoop Sizemore from In Memoriam by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Mr. Houston didn't agree with a lot of things we did, but he never condemned us. Mr. Houston will be missed in many ways. One of the things, I feel, that my classmates and I will miss most of all is, 'Del, see me at 3:00.' Michelle Kunkel Students He enjoyed discuss- ing a subject rather than reading it directly from the book. In my opinion he was one of the best! Let me say with deep anguish that Mr. Randall Houston will be missed. Mr. Houston will be remembered! Thomas John Ridley, Maintenance 130 IN RECOGNITION Thirty-nine Years of Service and Dedication There have been many meals prepared and served at John Carroll since the school's opening in 1947. One per- son who has been around since that time and who helped prepare the very first meal in the school's cafeteria, which was then located in what is now the typing room, is Juanita Gayles. Juanita retired at the end of the 1985-86 school year. During her thirty-nine years of service to the school, she saw many students come to John Carroll, graduate, and become prominent individuals. All members of the John Carroll Community, past and present, join in thanking Juanita for her service and dedica- tion and in wishing her a very happy retirement. Juanita Gayles 131 VEC GOES HORSEBACK RIDING They are like princes and princesses on their own special territory. They ride on their horses through a wonderful kingdom. The royalty are the VEC students. Every Thursday they went to the Oak Mountain stables and rode on their own special horses. While five of the students learned to ride, the others cleaned stables, brushed their horses, and learned responsibility. The horses helped perform a miracle for these students. They offered therapy for the mentally and emotionally handicapped. The horses gave a sense of security and helped to bring out new found self- respect and confidence. These personal ac- complishments helped the riders improve their con- centration, self-discipline, and language skills. The horses were a learning experience and a wonderful type of therapy for these students during the 1985-86 school year. 32 133 Mike Sperando at the prom with his date An- toinette Campisi. CLASS NIGHT Jimmy Struggs receives the Floyd Meshad trophy. Michaele Culleton accepts the Tom Banks trophy. Class Night was held im- mediately following the Baccalaureate Mass. There were many people who received special honors and recognition. However, everyone who graduated was a real winner. Congratulations to all! JUNIOR RING CEREMONY Traci, are you late? Suzette Saia receives her ring. The Junior Ring Ceremony was held May 20, 1986. This is the official day of becoming a Senior . At this afternoon ceremony, the juniors received their rings from Mr. Oleksiak. Congratulations to the class of '87. Much luck and Best Wishes! Rita McNair receives her ring. Some of these we are sure you didn’t know about. If some of you request them, next year they might become electives! You never know. 144 Those amazing Computer Classes. FOR EVERYONE! IT COULD BE . . . Teachers who give tests. History Films. Math Classes. Beautiful Scenery! Smiling Office Helpers. 145 In Memory of a Friend ... Kristine Boykin The Class of 1986 graduated with the usual elation that accompanies such an occasion. However, the absence of a fellow classmate and friend was remembered with sadness and fondness by all. Kristine Boykin, a member of the 1986 Senior Class, died on December 15, 1984, leaving a void in our lives. We will remember her as a true and dear friend. 146 IN MEMORIAM This page is dedicated to the memory of Becky Bailey. Becky loved life and loved being with people. She saw goodness in all the people she met. More than anything else, she loved animals, especially horses. Becky had a natural gift for riding and hoped someday to be a member of the U.S. Equestrian Team. Becky dreamed of attending John Carroll, a dream that she was never able to fulfill. She is missed by all who knew her and loved her. We will always remember her sparkling blue eyes, her impish smile, and her cheerful personality. Our loss is God's gain. May she rest in His Peace and Love. 147 We Have Copper Alloy Bar And Plate Ready lb Ship Ibday! '4 SOUTHERN RESISTANCE WELDING CD., INC. That's a good question. I think I'll start by saying, I hope you enjoy our book! We put a lot into it; we worked very hard. This book should reflect the good, the bad, and show that great Carroll Friendship in each of us. How can I say Goodbye? By thanking those teachers whom I bugged: Mr. Oleksiak and Mr. Fisher, who understand that the Yearbook comes first; Mrs. Dimon and Miss King for being super moderators; Mrs. CisseN for always having a pen, envelope, or a pass I could have; Mrs. Sykes for understan- ding why I was late so many times; and Amor Guevara; I'm sorry your picture wasn't taken. (Amor was the first runner-up to the Queen of Hearts.) How do I say Goodbye? By knowing I put my all into Green Leaves '86. Missing sleep to make the deadlines — I was dedicated. I'm sorry for all the people I drove crazy. It's over. My grandmother can finally clean up my Yearbook Cor- ner. I can say a fond farewell to my staff. It's been a pleasure and I love vou all. I can finally say, Goodbye, JC, and I'll miss you. Sincerely, Wendi Tamiko Demby '86 Green Leaves Editor 200 S - - i ..
