JOHN CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL Beyond the Shadow BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA 2 3 6 Friend Is to Be One Emmerson 14 BEYOND T In the memories of John Carroll, People linger in the doorways, Some happy, some sad, some scared, And some very ambitious. Taking The passages of life sometimes Causes tears and anger. These People learn to handle the Surprises And go on as if no obstacle Could stand in their way. After they have opened that Final door, the Knowledge they Have been looking for waits for them BEYOND THE SHADOW Taking all they have learned, Go one step further; putting the Broken pieces into place, they turn And help others who have fallen Behind. For they have so much to teach now, and so much they have accomplished. Many go in their Successful ways and face tomorrow With open minds. t T t ricia O’Gara 17 PEOPLE 19 CLASS OFFICERS FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT LeAnna Kirkwood VICE PRESIDENT John Lavelle SECRETARY: Ann Vick TREASURER: Tina Shunnarah (Not Pictured) PRESIDENT Brian Sullivan VICE PRESIDENT Leo Boohakcr SECRETARY Rosie Joseph TREASURER Druanne Hams 20 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Tim Kcrpcr VICE PRESIDENT Patti Parker SECRETARY: Stephanie Carey SECRETARY Monica Austin TREASURER Roxanne Calamuta PRESIDENT Vince P.lato VICE PRESIDENT Ve,a Hlltgau SECRETARY: Tracy Kemp TREASURER. And the tale is almost over Four great years have come and gone. Yet we don't feel that much older. Friendships have bloomed and loves have grown. Some people have formed unending ties We wish it would always be this. But. that's the one thing Time denies We've seen victories and mourned losses. Each year has had its trials. Yet through the joy as well as pain. We've laughed and shared the smiles As Freshmen, we entered the doors of J.C.. With high hopes, we started the year As seniors, we wave good bye to our school. And leave with a prayer and a tear. The outside world won't be easy to face. Good and bad will surely come our way. But. thoughts of each other will give us strength. To push on. and never go astray. We all have our plans and our dreams. Yet — who knows what the future holds? Patiently, we'll have to wait. As the dawn of a new day unfolds They say that all good things must come to an end. But this doesn't have to be so, For as we depart - “The Proud Class of ’82 Fond memories will follow, where ever we go. At the game, students cheered the team on to a big win over Fultondale. Dana Henderson was crowned Queen. Liz Reich was first alternate, and Marilyn Carra was chosen second alternate. Other candidates included Alisa Estes. Joan Alvey, Gina Fawal. Kim Bcthune and Sonya Stefanu. Unlike past Homecomings, this year, the dance was held on Saturday night, with Tamberlaln as the band. It was a combined effort of the Student Council and the CSMC. The reason it was called a “crush dance was that all girls were given the chance they always wanted to ask the boy of their dreams to the dance. As usual candidates were chosen from each class. All girls running for Princess and Queen of Hearts raised money daily from fellow-students and organizations which amounted to quite a sum of money. This money all went to needy charities. During football season, the football cheerleaders led the students on in a constant series of cheers and chants. They put on many amusing skits pertaining to the weekly games. The pep rallies always began with a prayer and the fight song. The basketball cheerleaders did a super job of promoting school spirit during the basketball season. They too, raised spirit with fire up chants and cheers and performed various dance routines. A spirit stick was given to the class which had the most spirit. This never failed to ignite excitement among the students. The Cavalier, Steve Feruson, always made each pep rally complete. Cairo In action Nothing but Wtnnmfll Mary about to take a dive! If a Bird? The hero, Dountless Crusader, was portrayed by Doug Neil. The other major roles were played by Gina Fawal as Little Saccharin, Joey Lucas as Baby Bob, Jack Simon and Rachel Johnson as the aging grandparents, and Tara Hulen and Jill Royer as the scheming secretaries. The Biack Jacks and Southern Comfort NIGHT ON BROADWAY The Fourth Annual Night on Broadway proved to be quite a success. This is the big night of the whole year that all the students, faculty, and families await to be entertained by the school’s most talented students. All the seniors provided great leadership throughout the season. However, the Cavs had many young players and the future looks promising. The season came to an end in a valiant battle against Leeds. The Cavs fought hard, but victory was snatched from their grasp in the last few seconds, ending their hopes to advance to the state play-offs. The staff works very hard to make the yearbook enjoyable for the student body. This year the Editorsin-Chief are Michelle Rosato and Rena Varagone. The section editors are: Rita Hood, People; Dana Henderson, Student Events; Lee Lavette, Student Life; Gail Short, Clubs; Chris Thomas, Sports. The Photography Editor is Lisa Todd and the Business Manager is Traci Kemp. Advisor is Miss Ann King. DEBATE TEAM The Debate Team has once again had an excellent year. They attended a number of tournaments in Selma, Atlanta, Homewood, and Tuscaloosa. The team was awarded many plaques and certificates this year and was allowed to attend the State Tournament which was held in Tuscaloosa. Alabama. The team was also proud in being able to host the first tournament in The Catholic Forensic league here at John Carroll. Mr. Phillip Bahakel was the very busy coach for the team. 107 . r tv s 1 108 MATH TEAMS fMEKi i- jJ JUNIOR MATH TEAM The John Carroll math teams competed in many tournaments throughout the year. They were always successful at their competitions, which is something J. C. is quite proud of. Long hours of practice, study and work were put into the warm up system of these winning teams. John Carroll’s senior math team travelled to Grissom High School in Huntsville and placed Tenth out of the 40 schools participating. Each team member placed in the top 100. On March 26, the team once again travelled to the Jefferson-State Tournament. The team placed sixth overall and Vera Hillegass placed 23rd individually. There were many other tournaments that the various math teams competed in; they always came out on top! SENIOR MATH TEAM 105 Math Teams John Carroll is very proud of all four of its math teams. Members of these math teams are students who maintain very high math grades and are members of Mu Alpha Theta. They dedicate many long afternoons to hours of practice and preparation for tournaments. John Carroll has always placed in the top percentage of teams in competition, usually boasting first, second, and ocassionally third places. All this success is due not only to the student’s dilligent work, but due credit goes to the math team’s coaches: Mrs. Helen Miller, Mrs. Catherina Sperando, and Sr. Dominica. This is one of the many reasons John Car roll is one of the most well-rounded schools in the Birmingham; for not only does the school enjoy the pleasure and pride of being represented by highly ranked athletic teams, it also is very proud of scholastic teams and organizations such as its math teams. Head Coach David Kdcoyn The 1981-82 version of Carroll basketball was one of the best in the history of the school. The team did in fact set a new school record for victories in a single season, capturing 26 wins against only 5 losses. The Cavs were the hottest team in the Birmingham area, after the Christmas break winning 23 of the last 25 games. During the course of the season, the Cavs took the consolation championship in the Shades Valley Tournament, became the first Carroll varsity to ever win the Independent Tournament championship, and finished the season as Area 10 champions. The accomplishments led to the Cavs being ranked sixth in the state at the end of the regular season, the first Carroll basketball team to be ranked state wide in fourteen years. The hopes of going to and winning the state tournament were derailed, however, by a heartbreaking loss to Fairfield in the Region 5 championship game. Others who had outstanding seasons were John Orth (Goalie), Ray Rogers and Jim Smaltz (Defense). Mike Cooper and Wes Quiggle (offense). All players gave a hundred percent and the team is quickly putting John Car-roll on the Soccer Scene as a force to be reckoned with in the future. Graduating seniors from the team are Ray Rogers, Mike Cooper, Wes Quiggle, Walid Khalil, Billy Tate. This leaves a strong nucleus of players for next year. In one of their last games, they defeated Glenn by a score of SO. They played exceptionally hard on the defensive end of the field this season. They have been led on defense by their goalie Jeannine Zar2aur. On offense the girls have had balanced scoring attack. No on has dominated the scoring individually, but they have all contributed as a good team should. In game over Glenn. Jacque Ross scored two goals, Sarah McAnulty scored one, Cindy Letchman scored one, and Jeannine Zarzaur scored one goal. The team relies on good defense in order to produce good scoring. The girls did a very good job of representing John Carroll this year in soccer. TRACK The track team, coached by Rob Crawford, had a successful year. They competed in many meets in the area, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Berry. They also did well in the sectionals with many of the team’s members qualifying for the state. Sparkling performers through the 1982 season were Kyn Bradford, Janet Lewis, Kim Eberhardt, Gina Potocnik, Bill Johnson, and Bill Schroll. Girls' Track Team Girl's Tennis Team The girl’s tennis team had a very good season. The team was coached by Miss Elizabeth Brown. The senior players — Sonya Stefanu, Beth Walters, and Tracy Brill — were very strong leaders for the team, but very promising girls will made up the future year’s team. The boy’s tennis team consisting of Pat Sullivan, Chris Loveless, Bobby Hopton-Jones. Chris Cotes, Joe Vitro, and Mike Upshaw, had quite a good season. They defeated many tough opponents. The team did very well in the sectionals, having four of their six players in the finals. The sectionals were very exciting and close; they lost a chance to go to the State Tournament in a close doubles match against Indian Springs. All in all, they had a successful season. Boy' T«nnU Team John Carroll is very proud of this year’s swimming and diving team. Helen Besse finished first in the state in the southeast. Helen competed against fifteen other divers to gain her first place victories. In the senior women’s division, Helen finished first on the highboard and second on the lowboard. Kathy Brattain placed second in the southeast in backstroke. She competed against thirty-five swimmers in the tournament held at Mountain Brook Swim and Tennis club. Rusty Levins, who went to the youth games at the University of Massachusetts, received two gold medals in freestyle and one bronze medal in the individual medly. Rusty competed against twenty-four youths from all over the country. All members of this team are quite promising swimmers and divers; they all have bright futures ahead. SWIMMING DIVING Swimming and Diving Team The John Carroll golf team ended their season on a disappointing note. They lost a tough match to Selma. It was the first match lost all season. Top scorers were Frankie Latham, Kevin McCarthy, David Thornton and Brian Hare. The team also competed in the regionals competition. Rough weather conditions prevented the Cavs from placing as good as expected. Frankie Latham missed the cut for state by two strokes. Chris Sullivan also shot well. As the seniors graduate, the team will loose many talented and skilled players. Next year still looks promising due to the fine underclassmen on the team. A few games are highlighted as follows: J. C. vs. Ensley John Carroll soundly defeated Ensley by an astounding victory of 11-2. The Cavaliers used sound defense and explosive hitting. High points of the game included humeruns by Todd Neil and Pat Bailey. The winning pitcher was Doug Neil. J. C. vs. Leeds The Cavaliers handled Leeds in grand style, grabbing a 12-2 victory. Todd Neil went the distance for Carroll, and once again the game was won by Car-roll's hitting. J. C. banged out 14 hits, including a homerun by Mike DeHart as opposed to five hits by Leeds. J. C. vs. Mt. Brook The Cavs faced Mt. Brook for the second time this season, and let a near victory slip by at a score of 16-14. Numerous homeruns were made by Kurt Britnell, Todd Neil and Mike DeHart. AND WOULD YOU KNOW THE REASON WHY THIS IS? IT IS BECAUSE THE LORD DESIRES OUR LOVE IN EVERY HEART HE WISHES TO BE FIRST HE THEREFORE KEEPS THE SECRET KEY HIMSELF TO OPEN ALL ITS CHAMBERS AND TO BLESS WITH PERFECT SYMPATHY AND HOLY PEACE, EACH SOLITARY SOUL WHICH COMES TO HIM. AND WHEN BENEATH SOME HEAVY CROSS YOU FAINT AND SAY, “I CANNOT BEAR THIS LOAD ALONE,” YOU SAY THE TRUTH. GOD MADE IT PURPOSELY SO HEAVY THAT YOU MUST RETURN TO HIM, THE BITTER GRIEF WHICH NO ONE UNDERSTANDS CONVEYS A SECRET MESSAGE FROM THE KING, ENTREATING YOU TO COME TO HIM AGAIN. AUTHOR UNKNOWN 175 Being editor of the 1982 edition of Green Leaves has been one of my most memorable experiences 1 have had at John Carroll. This yearbook is the culmination of many long hours of hard work by extremely dedicated people. First of all, I would like to recognize all the section editors who did an outstanding job — especially Lee Lavette and Gail Short, who went beyond the call of duty. A special thanks is due Missy Rosato and Sweet Pea Pappas who were responsible for nearly all the photographs found in this book. To Tracy Briil and Kyle Kirkwood, who spent very late nights helping me in times when help was most needed — I extend my deepest gratitude. Also, I would like to express my appreciation to Matt Pappas whose previous experience proved most helpful. Hopefully, the contents of these pages reflect the lifestyles, times, and precious memories shared by all at John Carroll. Rena and I have tried to put forth a book enjoyable to all. I only hope that It served to capture many treasured memories. Without the support of Miss King, the Green Leaves staff's moderator, and my parents. I may not have had the patience required to complete this yearbook. Thanks to all!!! Sincerely yours, Michelle Rosato Editor-in-Chlef
