GREEN LEAVES 1981 JOHN CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL Birmingham, Alabama All Rushing About Down The Halls of John Carroll. The Race of Time Passes Quickly. Friends You'll Keep For Life. Friends That Pass as You Start Your New Life in a World of Strangers. 10 Helping to Mature. u Can We Keep This Forever? 12 Just Pack it Away Somewhere in the Back of Your Mind. The Race of Life Passes Quickly IN DEDICATION Art Rainwater Four years ago Art Rainwater joined John Carroll. The student body opened its arms and gave a warm welcome to the Class of 1981 as well as a new principal. The students and Mr. Rainwater have grown hand in hand over the past four years. The hard work, dedication, and determination of Mr. Rainwater is evident in the everyday activities of John Carroll. This school is a better place with a cleaner cafeteria, better discipline, and higher enrollment thanks to the hard work of Mr. Rainwater. He is more than a principal, he is a true example of leadership. He never seems too tired of listening to and working with the students. Art Rainwater, our mentor, has earned support and respect. IN MEMORIAM John Ames It Seems Like Yesterday It seems like only yesterday we were starting out. In a world so exciting and new. Roaming the halls where we would laugh and shout. It seems like yesterday. We will always remember little things. His laugh and the love he had for all of us. He will always be a part of us. His memory won't die. We will treasure all our memories. Enough to last forever. Remember how we laughed. It seems like yesterday. — Jenine Poole Margaret Shaia Fly Free Fly free like a bird my friend. Soar easily through the cold brisk wind. Let not a thing take you down. Keep on flying toward the happiness Cod found. Never let your head fall, just keep holding it up high, Take a deep breath and fly bird, fly. Live all your dreams while you have the chance. Oh, proud bird you're free at last. Never look down to the earth, for you'll see the hell you once knew, And the dark gray clouds will cover the sky that was once clear and blue. And your tears will fall like the pouring rain. And you'll relive that endless moment of pain. Never hang your head low, but show all of your pride. Let the people know you have lived, not died. Fly on through the present, future and past. Fly on free bird, you've made it at last! — Kellie Wehby 19 PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPI 20 PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOI 21 Seniors Vicki Accardi Tom Adams David Albright Linda Alexander CarlApicella James Arrington Ben Balzli Ed Banks Paul Bello Nancy Besse Jim Berger Teresa Bessiere Andy Betbeze Susan Boackle Kerry Bonner Antoinette Boohaker Maron Boohaker lack Briggs Leah Borges George Brothers Lisa Browne Michael Bruno Scott Burdette John Bruzzese RoseAnn Butero 23 David Campbell Tracy Campbell Dana Carlson DeAnna Cataldo Leigh Ann Ceravolo Bret Chastain Matthew Chilcoat Cynthia Clay Cathy Cooper Edward Covington Mary Covington Kathleen Crawford Judy D'Alessandro Anthony Davis Paulette DeFrank Jerry Dichiara Mark Dinan Elizabeth Domit Chris Dore Ken Dortch 24 Patty Douglas Julie Dowling Whendy Durham David Eidson Dennis Eidson Alicia Grant Scott Graves Denise Gravlee Alan Gruman Donny Grundhoefer Maryjacka Michele Jackson Shandra Jackson Theresa James Michael Jefferson Pamela Jenkins Darrell Jewell David Johnson Donald Johnson Jeff Jones 76 Mike Kelley Ellen Kelly Marlene Kelly Ruthanne Kendrick John Kerper Wendy Kitchens Greg Lanzi Andy Lartigue Renee Latham Rita Latham Candy Levins Angela Lewis )oe Locascio Ann Logue Rosalie Lorino Denise McCarthy Billy McClurg Scott McDonough Dixie McGill Jimmy McPoland Dan Meadows Shawn Meeks Barbara Meriwether Maxine Metcalf Michelle Miranda 77 Verna Mitchell Eddie Moran Tracy Nelson Patrick Newsome Mike Oliver Matt Pappas Geoffrey Parker Laura Pearce Dale Pennington Kathy Perryman Mary Pitts Cathy Poole Jenine Poole Andretta Porter Victor Powell Pat Ramsey LouAnnRenda Mark Renda John Reymann Leigh Ricketts 78 Cedric Robinson Rene Robinson Diana Romano Jill Ross Lisa Ross Andy Saab John Sanchez Frederica Saunders Caroline Sazera D. Where did it all go? The lobster that was once so red, The duckie who lost his head. The golf flags that flew so proudly in the wind, And Tyrone, our very special friend. Where did it all go? The cute little elves that stoc 1 next to the bunny. The bees in the garbage can l tat made delicious honey. The mushrooms that were strategically placed. And the big wheel that was never raced. Where did it all go? The lion who was once protector of the land. The spot where the rooster and chicken used to stand. The Mountain Brook street signs disappeared into thin air. But at least we still have the yellow lounge chair. Yes, the Senior Park decor was truly great, There was nothing else quite like it in the entire state. I'm sure everyone will miss it so. And ask the never ending question, Where did it all go? — Judy D'Alessandro 30 Raymond Zarzaur SENIOR INDEX ACCAROI. VICKI: Pep CM 9. CSMC 9. Ort Batketball 9. Math Tram 9. Concert Oo- 0. Abbot Dreaper speaks. John Carroll's Thirty-fourth Annual Commencement was held May 26th, 1981. The Seniors filed into the Civic Center Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m., accompanied by the band's Processional, Pomp and Circumstance. The Invocation was given by Reverend Timothy Hill, followed by the inspiring Commencement Address of Abbot Hilary Dreaper. Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for — espe cially the Class of '81. Principal Art Rainwater presented the graduates and Most Reverend loseph G. Vath conferred the diplomas. As with last year, students who completed a special program of math, science and foreign language, received an Advanced Studies Diploma. Alter the excitement had died down, Mr. Rainwater recapped the honors that had previously been received at Class Day. Mr Rainwater informed everyone that the Class of 1981 had been awarded over $16 million in scholarships, the largest amount in the history of john Carroll. Finally, Bishop Vath made some closing remarks.-The graduates then sang the Alma Mater for the last time as a class and tossed their caps into the air. . Graduation was history. Soon afterwards, the Class of '81 was swamped by family and friends in the Civic Center lobby. There were both tears of joy and tears of sadness as the graduates hugged and congratulated each other — some for the last time. It was truly an experience they will never forget. To promote spirit, as in previous years, the seniors required all underclassmen to wear costumes during Hey Week which reflected the biggest fads of the seventies The week began with the freshmen dressed as King Tut, followed by the sophomores who represented various Star Wars characters, and also by the Juniors who came as Punk Rock singers. The Rat Patrol frequently checked to make sure that the students were in proper attire. If anyone failed to come dressed up, he risked paying the consequences. As always, the highlight of Hey Week was the assembly Pep Rally. It contained a variety of games and contests between the classes under the supervision of the Mafia. Besides providing entertainment, the assembly served to ignite spirit and enthusiasm for the big game. And what a game it was! The Cavs defeated Leeds by a 14-6 victory, qualifying them for the 1980 3A state playoffs. During halftime, Kellie Webby was crowned the new Homecoming Queen. Her first runner-up was Kathy Tom-brello, and her second runner-up was Roxanne Wilson. Later that night at the Dance, Jena Standard and Jerry DiChiara were crowned Queen and King of School Spirit. Both have shown outstanding school spirit over the years at Carroll. Homecoming, this year, proved to be a great success throughout the week, at the game, and at the dance. It was one of the most successful projects ever put forth by the John Car-roll CSMC. This year, in order to encourage all candidates to work hard to raise money for projects to aid the needy, the contest rules were modified — the candidate who collected the largest amount of donations from the students and faculty at John Carroll was crowned Queen of Hearts, while the separate and distinct new title of Princess of Hearts would go to the candidate who gathered from business, relatives, and outside friends the greatest total in contributions. Crowned Queen of Hearts was Senior Tracy Nelson, while Sophomore Tracey Johnson was Alternate Princess of Hearts was Sophomore Monica Austin, and Junior Marilyn Carra was recognized as Runner-Up. King of Hearts candidates continued the tradition of selling dance tickets. Maron Boohaker, a Senior, earned the title of King, while Sophomore Landy Fox was Alternate. The first big event was Homecoming, which was a great success. Since time would not allow for a Christmas Assembly, the Student Council sold Santa-Crams and put their all into decorating the building in accordance with the yuletide spirit before the holidays. On March 28. John Caroll's annual Night on Broadway once again saw a sellout crowd thanks to the behind-the-scenes work of the Student Council. A Saturday in April was devoted to cleaning up the back-parking lot and surrounding areas. The Student Council also sponsored several football dances, a beach party dance, and a basketball dance celebrating the release of the ex-hostages. In February they sold and delivered Valentines. The Student Council was also responsible for voter registration and the tallying of ballots for most school-wide elections. Up-keep of the Coke machine by the Student Council is one of the many other things that keep John Carroll running smoothly. Moderators this year were Mrs. Jayne Autry and Mrs. Katherine Richards, whose cooperation and patience made the Student Council a success. The John Carroll student newspaper, The Cavalier, is a monthly publication which is produced by the Journalism Class under the direction of a moderator and editor-in-chief. This year, as with last year, Hilda Horn was the moderator of the class. Matt Chilcoat served as editor of the paper. As a result of the hardworking and dedicated staff, the paper underwent many changes, including format and overall style. The Cavalier was also enlarged to sixteen pages. 106 The Cavalier Staff — Journalism Class MATH TEAMS Imagine this ... you're sitting in a desk surrounded by strangers. Each one is equally as qualified as you. Your goal — to be number one! The tension is rising. The math problem appears on the screen. You work as fast as you can. Can you finish first? This is the type of pressure put on each member of the |ohn Carroll Math Team The senior team consists of John Kerper, Dale Pennington, Victor Powell, Susan Boackle, and Alan Gruman. After hours of hard work preparing and drilling, the team was ready to compete. They went first to Randolf School in Huntsville on November 8,1980. They placed fifth as a team. Kurt 8filnell pitches Carroll Burns Blue Devils In their first performance of the season, |ohn Carroll shut out Mortimer Jordan 21-0. The defense played excellently, giving up only 82 yards rushing. Carroll's first scoring drive was 91 yards, with Dale Watts taking it in from the Jordan 7 yard line. In the second half, the Blue Devils threatened deep in Carroll territory after recovering a fumble — but the tough Cavalier defense would not give ground Soon afterward, Carroll moved the ball down the field and scored on a quarterback option play by Kurt Britnell from the 11. The pass to Pat Evans was complete for the two-point conver sion. Moments later, Britnell again scored on a brilliant 33 yard run. Pat Ramsey kicked the point after to make the final score 21-0. Dale luice Watts led the Cavaliers to victory by gaining 140 yards in 14 carries — including 2 touchdown runs. He also passed for 81 yards, including a 35 yard touchdown. Early into the game. Carroll put some points on the board with Watts' 72 yard burst. Ramsey's kick put Carroll in front 7-0. The Spartans countered with a length-of-the-field touchdown drive that tied the game 7-7 as the first quarter ended. The rest of the game belonged to the Cavs. It was Watts' turn again in the second quarter as he connected with Ed Banks for a touchdown pass. An unsuccessful PAT made the score 13-7. The second half was a stiff defensive struggle. The Cavs put together a drive in the fourth quarter with Watts again scoring from 5 yards out. Ramsey hit his second PAT of the evening, and Carroll had a big 20-7 victory. Carroll Comeback Ties Brownies The football game between John Carroll and Jones Valley didn't start until the fourth quarter for the Cavaliers, with Tony Tudisco scoring twice to even things up. Jones Valley scored in the second and third periods to go out in front of Carroll 13-0. Carroll took up nine minutes of the third period, marching to the Jones Valley 5 yard line where it lost the ball on a fumble. The fourth quarter started with Carroll driving from its own 44 to score in 13 plays. Tudisco bulled in from nine yards out. Pat Ramsey's kick was good. The Brownies couldn't move the ball after the kickoff, so they kicked to the Carroll 45. Carroll scored a touchdown in nine plays, Tudisco again carrying the ball from two yards out. Then Jones Valley blocked the big extra point — the score was to remain 13-13. Tony Tudisco BUI IS his way through Valley Quarterback Kurt Britnell runs the option Three in a Row?!? John Carroll and Homewood were both undefeated coming into the Friday night game against each other. Incredibly, they both came out of it undefeated, too. The Cavaliers and the Patriots tied 0-0 at Carroll Field, extending Carroll's consecutive games tied streak to an incredible three. Homewood came close to scoring in the third quarter, driving from their JO to John Carroll's 12, before being stopped on a crucial fourth-and-one play by the Cavs' John Reymann and Greg Young. The Cavaliers played possibly their best defensive game of the season. Standouts on defense included Seniors Harold Shader, Rob Shine and Ed Banks. Cavs Tie Valley 2-0-2 was the record of the John Carroll Cavaliers following their electrifying 20-20 tie with the host Shades Valley Mounties. The early part of the game belonged to Carroll, as Gav fullback Tony Tudisco raced 45 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Valley came back in the second period, tying the game 6-6. Valley took the lead at 13-6 in the third stanza on a 62 yard drive. In the fourth quarter, Tudisco, who would finish with 109 yards in 20 carries, scored from two yards out, to cut the lead to 13-12. An unsuccessful conversion kept it that way. The Mounties scored with three minutes remaining, going ahead 20-12. Then the stage was set for the final frantic few rr)inutes. Trailing 20-12 with under a minute to play, the Cavaliers scored on a nine yard run to cut Valley's lead to 20-18 Quarterback Kurt Britnell then connected with Mike Sullivan on a two-point conversion to pull it even, 20-20. 22 Rob Shine discusses the defensive gjme plan. Vestavia “Unties Carroll Coming into Friday night's game with Vestavia, the lohn Carroll Cavaliers had an incredible streak going: They had tied their last three consecutive games, making their won-lost record for the season a strange 2-0-1 The tying string had to end sometime, and it finally ended Friday night, Oct. 10, but not the way the Cavs had intended. Vestavia, pumped up over its own homecoming and determined to rebound from its own disappointing upset loss to Berry the previous week, untied Carroll 26-0. The Rebels were led by running back Lance Gulledge, and quarterback Danny Salchert, who scored three touchdowns. The Cavalier offense was led by quarterback Kurt Britnell and strongback Tony Tudisco, who ran effectively against the Vestavia defense. Twice Carroll drove deep into Rebel territory, only to have penalties kill their efforts. On another occasion Car-roll drove inside the Vestavia 20, ending the first half Cavs Whip Wildcats The Fultondale Wildcats shouldn't have bothered to show up at their homecoming game vs )ohn Car-roll. The game was full of big plays for the Cavaliers, as they trounced the Wildcats 27-0. On Carroll's first offensive possession. Dale Watts threw a halfback option pass to Ed Banks for a touchdown. The play covered 50 yards. Minutes later Fultondale made its only serious threat of the evening, driving inside the Carroll five yard line. A tough Cav defense stopped the Wildcats at the two. A few plays after Carroll had possession of the ball, Britnell scampered 54 yards for Carroll's second touchdown. The Cavs lined up for the extra point but Mike Sullivan took the snap, rolled out and hit Pat Evans in the end zone for two points. The game remained 14-0 until the third quarter. With a fourth-and-goal situation from the 15, the Cavaliers faked a field goal attempt and threw a touchdown. This time Sullivan hit Banks in the end zone for six points. The extra point by Pat Ramsey was good, making the score 21-0. But the Cavaliers were not through. In the fourth quarter they scored again. Dale Watts received a punt on Carroll's 43 yard line and put on a show, running 57 yards for the touchdown. The extra point was no good, making the score 27-0. A Vestavia player is stopped cold bv lohn Carroll defender Andy Betboze. Carroll Rolls Over Pinson John Carroll's Cavaliers took another big step toward the championship of Class 3-A's Area 10 with a 27-7 win over Pinson Valley at Carroll Field. The Cavs went to 3-0 in region play, taking advantage of two Indian turnovers in the first period to jump to a 14-0 first quarter lead. On the game's second play from scrimmage, Carroll's Rob Shine recovered a Pinson fumble at the Indian's 26 yard line. Moments later, tailback Dale Walts scored on a five yard run, giving the Cavs a 6-0 lead. The PAT failed. On its next possession Pinson Valley fumbled again and Carroll recovered. Then it was the versatile Mr. Watts' turn again, as he connected with split end Ed Banks on a 58 yard halfback option pass for a touchdown. Watts himself ran for the two-pomt play that made the score 14-0. The shellshocked Indians came back, however, to score before the first period ended. The score was then 14-7. That closed the scoring in the first half. In the third quarter, Carroll put together a 72 yard, 12 play drive to score. The touchdown came on a 34 yard run by Chris Dichiara. Pat Ramsey added the extra point Car-roll broke the game open in the final stanza, when Watts scored his second touchdown, this time on a 21 yard run. The conversion was missed and the Cavs had an important 27-7 win. 174 Tony Tudisco lakes a well-deserved break Carroll Tames Wildcats It doesn't happen too often that a team which has eight turnovers still wins the game. Then again, it doesn't happen too often that the team who profited from the turnovers gains only 51 yards total offense and only three first downs. |ohn Carroll's defense kept the Cavs in the game against the Tarrant Wildcats while the offense rolled up 346 yards to beat Tarrant by a score of 7-0. The defense played brilliantly the entire evening. Rob Shine, Harold Shader, and the whole front five kept the Wildcat quarterback under pressure during the ball game. Carroll's secondary had its biggest test of the year as Tarrant threw 20 passes. In all, they connected on 7 of the 20 passes, four of which were completed to Carroll defenders Ed Banks (who picked off two passes), Eric Herbst and Nick Renda. Carroll's only score came in the third quarter as |ohn Reymann drove in from the five. Pat Ramsey's extra point was good, making the winning margin seven. Dale Watt scamper to the end zone Cavs Win Area The John Carroll Cavaliers staked a claim in the state 3-A playoffs, whipping Leeds 14-6 at Carroll Field on Homecoming night. The win clinched the Area 10 championship for the Cavs, which finished a perfect 4-0 in area play and 6-1-3 overall. Early in the game it looked as if Leeds would receive the playoff berth. On their first play from scrimmage, the Green Wave scored on a 40 yard bomb. The extra point was blocked, but Leeds led 6-0. Carroll struck back on the first play of the second quarter when Tony Tudisco scored a 43 yard touchdown. Pat Ramsey's PAT put the Cavs up 7-6. The one-point margin held until the fourth quarter, when Carroll's Dale Watts raced nine yards for the score. The touchdown was set up moments earlier when Cav punter Nick Renda threw,to Watts for 17 yards to the Wave's 20. After the score, Ramsey again converted bringing the final to 14-6. Pal Ramsey in confusion. Midfield Eliminates Carroll John Carroll lost to Midfield 12-10 in a first round state 3-A playoff game. The Cavs scored in the first period on a 25 yard field goal, putting Carroll up 3-0. The Patriots bounced back in the second to make the score 6-3 at halftime. After a scoreless third period. Carroll regained the lead early in the fourth when Dale Watts, virtuoso of the option pass, connected on his speciality to Ed Banks with a 19 yard touchdown pass. Ramsey's PAT gave John Carroll a 10-6 lead. Midfield then put together its game winning scoring drive, the touchdown coming on a 38 yard pass. The stage was then set for Carroll's last minute drive and unsuccessful field goal attempt, happening on the Mid-field 15 with 1:47 remaining. The Patriots then ran out the remaining seconds, lohn Carroll completed its season at 6-2-). The team leader in hitting was Junior Kurt Britnell, while Sophomore Pat Bailey hit the most homeruns. Senior Pat Evans headed the pitching staff, posting an 8-4 record. Senior Mike Sullivan led the team in stolen bases, and Seniors Ed Banks and Eric Herbst had the greatest number of walks. FRANCIS PARKING LOT BURGER KING J C BACK — PARKING LOT RUBENSTEIN'S It Won't Be the Same Without The Class of 1981 Hopefully by the time you read this letter, you will find before you a very well-produced and entertaining yearbook As you can tell, this year the annual is shorter in length because, like everything else, the cost of producing a superior yearbook has gone up! This year's excellent staff, however, used their creative minds and compacted everything into these pages. When speaking of this year's staff, a few people stand out Those people were very dedicated and hard working. They are Malt Pappas, without whom this book wouldn't be here; Michelle Rosa to, who was always a great help. Rena Var agona, who had the impossible task of keeping track of the business dealings; and Debbie Winningham. who was both a help in production and a help to me during those rough times. A special thanks to the administration and fac ulty for all the understanding and help they have given us — especially our advisor Miss Ann King. Also a thank you to my friends who stood by me when 1 was falling apart and who were always around to pick up the pieces and get me started again. To all of you, THANKS!!! Finally, 1 hope this yearbook helps portray the Life wd lime at lohn Carroll this year. John Carroll is a unique school filled with very special people! 1 hope this is a yearbook that everybody can be proud of — 1 know am! Love y'all. Editor P.S. Good luck next year, Rena and Michelle! If you need me, call! Thanks M.T.P. and Dennis Eidson! Mom, 1 can finally gel that yearbook stuff out of my room! It will be clean again! 1 hope no one is offended by any of the captions — they were all in good humor! 184
