The Band works as a background for the Cavalcttes during all sports seasons. They Perform at all formal school ceremonies. This year they also came back strongly performing with the Choir. This year the band went to the state competition where it represented John Carroll in many types of music. The band is under the direction of Mr. Lee Fisher. 22 23 Bank Board ITie Band Board plays a significant role in the banking program at John Carroll. First of all. the program is set up by Birmingham Trust National Bank to help each student become more familiar with the business world. It gives students a sense of responsibility in that they can deposit and withdraw money without a parent's signature. Last, but not least, is the convenience of banking. All transactions are completed at school. Without the help of the Bank Board representatives, the faculty, and the students. this program would not be successful. The representatives go into the A.P. r«x ms to encourage students to bank and also to help them with any problems they may encounter with banking. I he faculty and student participation in the program has helped make John Carroll a top ranker among all Jefferson County high schools. Kneeling. left to right: Teresa Elkotiric. Valeric EJkounc. D.D. has been spiritual leader for the diocese of Birmingham for nearly nine years. In dealing with the school, the Bishop has three main administrative tasks: to teach, to review, and to maintain funds. As Bishop, he is responsible for teaching the Christian message to all: however, this task is impossible to carry out personally, but he associates with the people in order to spread his message. The Bishop also reviews all important matters of the school. In addition to teaching and reviewing, the Bishop sees that John Carroll acquires the money necessary for the operation of the school. Bishop Vath has strong views on the importance of a Catholic education. To him it ideally gives students a value system that cannot be duplicated outside a religious context. That is. this education is based on faith, the Word of God. and the Church. The Youth. states the Bishop, is a Hope for Society. He is very optimistic about young people, in that they are searching for the truth on their own. They are a dedicated Christian people. Mr. Brice A. Hendrick Mr. Brice A. Hendrick is former principal of John Carroll High School. His job now is Superintendent of all Catholic schools in the Birmingham Diocese. He works in affiliation with Bishop Vath and Mr. Art Rainwater, present principal, to keep John Carroll running smoothly. 112 Principal Mr. Art Rainwater Mr. Arl Rainwater is new at John Carroll this year. He and his family moved here from Texas where he was Assistant Principal at another Catholic High School. Mr. Rainwater has worked very hard this year to improve John Carroll as a school. He wants to strengthen the quality of education here. Making John Carroll the finest school education wise, is one of his long-range goals. He is a strong supporter of the religious life of the school. Since the beginning of the year. Mr. Rainwater has become an extraordinary minister, enabling him to administer the Eucharist. There are class masses every Wednesday, and school wide masses every first Friday of the month. He continues to encourage students to participate in the Liturgy. Mr. Rainwater seems to be a very good addition to John Carroll’s administrative team. Welcome to J.C. Mr. Rainwater! 113 Assistant Principal Mr. James J. Kircher Mr. James Kircher is Assistant Principal at John Carroll. Previously he taught biology here. He taught at many schools before and has received awards for his achievements. At John Carroll. Mr. Kircher is the first to enact disciplinary procedures and is usually the first to tackle the everday problems at school. He is truly a guiding force to the students. 114 Administration Sister Virginia Rohling is in charge of Administration at John Carroll. She is responsible for schedules being altered and perfected for the benefit of the student. Sister Virginia is always willing to help with personal or school-oriented problems. This year she enabled some senior girls to complete their service projects by letting them help in her office. She is truly an asset to the school. 115 Faculty Mrs. Patricia Clay Librarian Sr. Dominica Rigotti Algebra. Geometry. The memories you left behind Remember, do you remember. . . The laughter and the tears The shadows of misty yester-years The good times and the bad we’ve seen And all the others in between Remember, do you remember the times of your life. It’s time for the joys and the sorrows Put them away in your mind For memories arc times that you borrow To spend when you get to tomorrow. In Memoriam DON CATALDO As it is in any kind of production, hard work is an essential clement in creating an annual. A lot of hard work and late nights went into this particular annual. 1 did not do it all alone. Many people gave of their time on school afternoons and even after school was let out for the summer. I would like to give special recognition to a few people who gave of their free time to aid in the completion of this book. They are: Debra McLaughlin. Toni Baker. Rosanne Tombrello. and Mrs. Katherine Richards. One other person who deserves special thanks is Mrs. Jayne Autry, yearbook moderator. She had a special dedication to the book and was always willing to go out of her way to insure that wc got everything finished on time. I would like to offer a word of apology for the lack of clubs, and activities in the annual. We were unable to get pictures and or the proper information to do the intended pages. For me. editing this book was an opportunity to show my dedication to John Carroll. It was a learning experience because I had to take on added responsibility, and to work closely with the faculty, administration, and my fellow students. 1 hope that this year, and in all the coming years, you will get some enjoyment or gain some knowledge, by looking through this book. Sincerely yours. Editor 200 mm. mmm Siw4 WAv'«y.ti ■ x wsS ■ g|«P H. ),;• • 7V rvT, •.%: ■ mm J 3 1 M'W ' ' Vj I'. '.‘JJ i ______!____' ••■■ ■
