Vath ”Our Bishop Joseph G. Vath, D.D., is in his seventh year as the spiritual leader of more than fifty thousand Catholics in the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama. As chief teacher of his people, Bishop Vath has a vital interest in the spiritual growth of each individual student of John Carroll High School. His interest is actively shown each year by his celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit with members of the school community. We appreciate Bishop Vath taking time out of his busy schedule not only to instruct us but also to listen to our views on certain pertinent topics. This interest and willingness to listen on the part of Bishop Vath shows the confidence he places in young people, and this is truly a Sign of Hope. 20 Mr. Kircher — Assistant Principal Mr. Jim Kircher is serving John Carroll as the assistant principal for the second year. Mr. Kircher taught biology for thirteen years at Bishop Barry High School, at St. Lea's Prep School, and at John Carroll. Funds raised are used to help missions at home and abroad. The funds are distributed through THE PROPIGATION OF THE FAITH. The CSMC during Thanksgiving week distributed food to needy families. During the Christmas season, the CSMC members made over $3,000 in food, clothing, and toys and shared them with the less fortunate. During the year, accord- ing to the Red Cross, the CSMC members made over $200.00 worth of presents for the veterans at the Veterans Hospital. The members also made tifts and visited nursing homes. Before the inclimate weather sets in over the area, the club members take over fifty underpriviledged children to the Jimmy Morgan Zoo and have wiener roasts for them. The newest activity was to start a scholarship fund so that some student desipous of coming to Carroll will be able to do so. The club is unique. It is the best way members are able to help others less fortunate than themselves. Mrs. Ann Nolan, moderator of the CSMC. ✓ The 1976-1977 A child finds delight at the CSMC Christmas party. Students gain knowledge about the location, customs, foods and people of different countries. This year the language clubs included the Spanish Club, German Club and Latin Club. Each year the clubs provide special speakers and plan many activi- ties. Language Clubs also participate in the Inter- national Fair by adding their own imaginative and creative booths. Sister Benedicta catches up on her homework. Students make good use of the language resource center. Language Club members use their unscheduled time to review their lessons before class. 56 The Latin Club Moderator - Sister Mary Catherine Flynn 57 Where's ihe basketball?!? The sponsors for the senior football players and the Homecoming Court await their turn on the field. Let's play catch. Liturgy The man whose joy is in Jesus can never be sad. This is the atmosphere that a Catholic community should offer, and with the help of the school chaplains and those who take pan in the planning of liturgies, this atmos- phere can be seen and felt at Carroll. The team of chaplains spend time at J.C. to be of service to all students. There are also those involved in plan- ning liturgies, with representatives from each class forming a worship team. These people are vital to our community and their task is great. As Christians, we live and strive for a stronger bond of love in Christ and in others. The Mass and the Eucharist are the center of our religion and being able to share this among our fellow classmates gives us the chance to strengthen our faith. Father Richard Saad flashes a smile to brighten up anybody’s day. The student body watches on as the Mass is celebrated in the gym. The Student Council also sponsored the Intramu- ral Volleyball Games. 67 Yearbook Production Staff This year’s annual staff consisted of essentially four people: Mrs. Autry (moderator), Evelyn Mer- rin (editor and student photographer), Mary Carol Accardi and Susan Mus. Of course there were other people who did contribute to this book - Theresa Seifert, Andre Washington, Bobby Kelly, Tollese Harris and Marianne Donahue. Unfortunately, due to the lack of cooperation shown by some clubs, they have been eliminated from this yearbook. The pages which would have been filled by these clubs and organizations have been filled with candid pages. A lot of time and work was put into this yearbook and hopefully it will have something enjoyable for each John Car- roll student. CHAIRMEN Ziva Wilson, Carol Bianchi The Business Staff, under the direc- tion of Mr. John Ranelli, has provided the support necessary for John Carroll to have a yearbook. Without these people who worked so hard, this book would not have been possible. Even though there were deadlines and debts which seemed impossible to meet the business staff (with a little help from the senior class) came through in the end. 69 Homecoming — 1976 — The Assembly The 1976 Homecoming Assembly was the highlight of the week. The senior class showed its spirit by coming out ahead in the class competi- tion and by winning the spirit chain competition. And it says to you . . . Love when you can Cry when you have to . . . Be who you must That's a part of the plan Await your arrival With simple survival And one day we'll all understand . . . Conveyor Belt - Hose - Vulcanizing Pulleys In Memoriam — Father Kevin Walton Father Kevin Walton was a man who lived his life to the fullest. He held many posi- tions during his life in the priesthood and dealt with many people along the way. All of the people he met learned from him and because of him now see their lives as small celebrations preparing them for the big celebration when they meet God. Father Wal- ton was supposed to teach a course this year at John Carroll but God chose to take him from us here to his real home with Him. Father Kevin Walton is no longer with us in body, but his spirit will always live in the hearts of those who knew him. 182 In Memoriam — Bishop Thomas J. Toolen A great man will long be remembered for the charity he showed to all he came in contact with. Through his constant dedication, he was able to have a total of 709 buildings erected in the diocese. Included are: 189 churches; 95 grade schools; 119 rectories; 112 convents; 23 hospitals: and 17 high schools. Archbishop Toolen’s life was awarded with many honors as he diligently carried on his work. On September 27, 1910, Archbishop Toolen was ordained in the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore, and there served in the Archdiocese for seventeen years. In 1927, His Holiness Pope Pius XI named him sixth Bishop of Mobile to succeed Bishop Edward L. Allen. Furthermore, he was bestowed the title of Assistant at the Papal Throne by Pope Pius XII. Again Archbishop Toolen was honored by being raised to the rank of Archbishop Ad Personam,” and also be being assigned an Auxiliary Bishop, Rev. Joseph A. Durick. However, no greater honor could have been given him than the respect he got from his priests and friends. He will be long remembered for his outstanding character and for his faithful dedication to the work of God. When I first thought of being the editor of this yearbook, I was warned by a former John Carroll student not to get involved. I ran into quite a few obstacles with the production of this book, there were only a few people who would actually give up their time to work on it and there was a lack of cooperation which has already been mentioned earlier in this book. I was beginning to wonder if that person hadn't been right. But in the final analysis I am glad I edited this book and I would probably do it again. I would like to thank Mrs. Autry, my moderator. She was fantastic throughout all the little disasters we ran into and without her there would not be a yearbook. Also I want to thank those people who helped me meet my final deadline (especially Susan Mus, Bobby Kelly, and Laura Delk). And finally thank you to Alan Pizzitola, Tom Banks and Pat Sullivan who were kind enough to let us use their pictures on our cover. It was a Pan of the Plan that they should be so successful in their football careers. The reason I chose the picture of a sunrise for my editor’s page is because it fits in with our theme; Pan of the Plan. Each day there is something new planned for all of us. I hope you have enjoyed and will enjoy this book in the future. P.S. Miss Jayne. WE MADE IT!!!
