Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away. — Thoreau 7 8 9 o 13 14 o Ii 19 Faculty and Administration Bishop Joseph C. Vath Bishop Joseph G. Vath has strong views on the importance of a Catholic education. To him it “ideally gives students a value system that cannot be duplicated outside a religious context.” That is, education is based on faith, the Word of God, and the Church. Bishop Vath has been the spiritual leader for the Diocese of Birmingham for nearly seven years. He is very optimistic about young people, in that they are searching for the truth on their own. A ionsignor William K. I louck The Superintendent of Catholic schools in the Birmingham Diocese is Monsignor William R. Houck. He is convinced of the value of Catholic school education. The religious values gained form a Catholic education; relate to the happenings of the community, and therefore contribute to all. Monsignor has these objectives regarding Catholic education: to promote professionalism, to reinforce and refine the Christian philosophy and to generate a genuine enthusiasm. 20 Mr. William LaPlante Builds a Better John Carroll Mr. William J. LaPlante has been principal of John Carroll High School for the past four years. During the last four years, Mr. LaPlante has handled various duties, conflicts, and circumstances well. This year has not been any different. Mr. LaPlante constantly helps both faculty and students with any problems or questions they may have along with performing his other duties as Chief Administrator. No matter how busy he may be, he always makes time to listen and help. This year the Southern Association came to John Carroll for a ten year evaluation. At the conclusion of their visit they said ‘‘John Carroll High School is near greatness . . .Its faculty and Administration do an outstanding job . . . The public should be made aware of its achievements.” Though the comments were made to both the faculty and all the Administrators, it would not have been said if the ”man-at-the-top” had not met all responsibilities smoothly and efficiently. Sister Augusta Hamel Leaves John Carroll Sister Augusta Hamel has done an outstanding job as Assistant Principal at John Carroll High School. The role of disciplinarian has never been a pleasant responsibility for anyone. Nevertheless, Sister Augusta has always handled disciplinary problems, no matter how great c how small, justly and fairly. At the end of the first semester this year Sister Augusta was transferred to The Federation of St. Scholastica, a religious Association of Benedictine Sisters, in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she is a member of a council. As a member, she and 6 other Sisters will compile data dealing with the history and present status of Benedictine Sisters in the United States. Sister Augusta is also a full time Social Studies Instructor and is the Assistant Director of he Social Studies Department at Saint Benedict Academy. We shall miss her and wish her the best of happiness in the future. Mr. lira KirCher Assumes New Position as Assistant Principal Mr. Jim Kircher has been the new Assistant Principal at John Carroll High School since December. Although he has taught in the Biology Department for years, he has stepped into Sister Augusta's shoes quite easily and is doing an outstanding job. Mr. Kircher taught at Bishop Barry High School and Saint Leo's Prep School in Florida before coming to John Carroll. While teaching at Bishop Barry he was named “Coach of the Year” in the state of Florida for his outstanding coaching job in field and track. Mr. Kircher has taken degrees from St. Bernard College, Birmingham Southern, and U.A.B. in math and biology. He has also earned his MA degree in biology and AA degree in biology and school administration from U.A.B. Mr. Kircher and his wife make their home in Birmingham with their four daughters. During his spare time Mr. Kircher enjoys handball and tennis. The third member of the Administrative team is Sister Virginia Rohling. It is this seemingly tireless woman that has the responsibilities of arranging a conflict- free schedule. The thing that is so incredible is . . .it works! Besides this strenuous and sometimes thankless job, Sister Virginia still manages to teach a math class and help moderate the Student Council. Without the energy and dedication of this woman, John Carroll would not be the great place it is. 22 Office Workers Faculty Mrs. Ann Webby — Science Deportment Chairman, Biology, Pep Club Moderator, Science Club Modera- tor Mr. James Torpey — Religion, Freshman Class Moderator Mrs. Jone Autry — Typing, Highstepper Mod- erator Mr. Robert Potter — Social Studies Depart- I I Mrs- Katherine Richards — Typing, Clerical Office Practice, Shorthand, Business Education Department ment Chairman, Government and Economics I | Chairman, Business Club Moderator, Bonkboord Moderator_______________________________________ Mrs. Patty Clay — Library Department Chair- man Mr. Lorry Smalley — English, Sociology and Psychology, CSMC Moderator Mr. Lee Fisher — Band, Band Moderator, Music Department Chairman 25 Sister Catherine Flynn — Latin, General Lan- guage 26 Mrs. Sonia Dale — Chemistry, Junior Class Moderator, Junior Civitan Moderator, High- stepper Moderator___________________________ Mrs. Johanna White — Biology Mrs. Lynette Casey — Girls' P.E., Physical Education Department Chairman, Cheerleader Moderator Sister Francis Bruno — Alabama History and Civics, Art, Art Club Moderator, Art Depart- 27 Sister Benedicta Karter — French, French Club Moderator [Miss Elizabeth Brown — Spanish, Spanish Club Moderator, Foreign Language Department Chairman, Ten- nis Teom Moderator 28 I-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ! True dedication on the part of these workers is shown by their engaging smiles and their efficient handling of various duties about the school. The students at John Carroll owe much to this true dedication of these people. Mrs. Christine Peacock helps make the John Carroll Cafeteria the great place it is. When Mrs. Grocie Burrell smiles that smile everyone knows something good is cooking in the cofeteria.____________________________________ Mrs. Clara Harris, though always very busy, has time to give onlookers a smile. 36 Mr uomfaGo l Mn Mh excellen ook h elg regarMh oo fUh afetencr r Yvonn jckc i ta us h afefen elgjn uggl h student with a nutriti K lunch. Once again the Student Council had an extremely successful year. The new moderator was Miss Jeanette Milton, who did a superb job. The officers were: Kay Davis, president; Lena Ceravolo, girl’s vice president; Jerry Sherrill, boy's vice president; Rose Caltagirone, secretary; Ginger Ferlisi, treasurer. The council sponsored the 50's Dance, Halloween movies, intramural volleyball, the faculty- student basketball game, and the homecoming dance. With the money raised from these activities they bought a hundred new chairs for the gym. The council also sponsored two school cleanups, both of which were firmly supported by the student body. The council also had a new activity. Nights on Broadway. This was not a fund raising project but rather an effort to better unite I President Kay Davis seriously discusses Student Council business. One such project was a fund raising pro- ject in which the Science Club members sold candy during the lunch mods. The project was a great success since the club was able to raise the money necessary to sponsor other projects. A field trip to Southern Research was scheduled and the club members were very impressed with the cancer research carried on in the Insti- tute. By late January preparations were made for the annual Science Fair which was held in February. Steve Gaudin, a winner in the Carroll Fair, and Harold Coghlan both won awards in the Regional Fair held at the State Fairgrounds. To end the year, the Science Club members explored the fascinating world of taxi- dermy. At the skillful hands of the club members, several rats met their fate. All in all, the year was very successful and the members are looking forward to next year. These projects represent the interest and devotion evident in John Carroll's science students. It seems os though Scott Chieves has found some- thing really strange in this report. The judges considered each project carefully before making the decision. Easy. The answer is Green Leaves. The Yearbook Staff under the supervision of Mr. Mark Stricklin and co-editors Mary Claire Wells and Sara Sanchez, hoped to achieve a yearbook which was both pleas- ing to the students and an accurate record of the John Carroll Bicentennial year. In order to do this picture appointments had to be scheduled, lay-outs had to be drawn, copy had to be written and deadlines had to be met (a few were missed). Constant creativity was always in demand and often times the staff was pushed to its limit. Although the yearbook cost many hectic hours it was well worth the effort. Saro Sanchez, co-editor; Mr. Stricklin, modera- tor; Mary Cloire Wells, co-editor. The Annual Production Staff: (kneeling) Donna Barnes, Gayle Phillips, Laurie Bulgarella, Stacia Stewart, (standing) Evelyn Merrin, Mary Claire Wells, Nancy Walker, Art Tipton, Paula Shoio, Kat.e Walters, Mary Wal- ters, Donald Naccari, Karen Pugh, and Sara Sanchez. 46 Yearbook Business Staff Raises Needed Funds The Yearbook Business Staff raised the necessary funds needed to produce the 1975-76 yearbook. Green Leaves. Mr. John Ranelli was the moderator and the business managers were Martha Bahakel and LaQuita Rudolph. Under these peo- ple's guidance and encouragement the staff went out and raised the money by selling ads to various companies in the state. Also much school support was seen as many A.P.'s bought ads and many par- ents became donors. The Business Staff was also responsible for the selling of sub- scriptions. Through the hard work of these people and the generosity of those who bought ads, the 1975-76 Green Leaves was made possible. Maria Ellard and Rosanne Tortorici discuss the business angles of selling ads. 47 French Club Reaches Out to Community In order to meet the changing times, the French Club has restructured its whole for- mat. Instead of having one general club, each individual French class is a club. However, this new system still has the tra- ditional moderator and officers. Modera- tor Sister Benedicta, President Harold Coghlan, Vice President Patrice Moore, Treasurer Emily Boohaker, Chef de Chant Stephanie Reevers and Chaplain Jamie Brokenbourgh coordinate the activities of the individual clubs so that everyone can participate. During the Christmas season, French Club members filled Christmas stockings with candy in order to brighten the Christmas of the children at Children's Hospital. While presenting the stockings, the French Club members also shared a lit- tle happiness with the children by singing carols. The booth was a great attraction and the French Club ended another suc- cessful year. How can the French Club be anything but active with members like Tim Redwine, Mary Jane Pennington, Mod- erator Sister Benedicta, Harold Coghlan, Wilda Shortridge, Jake Biviono and Joey Redwine? 48 FHA Has Successful First Year The FHA (Future Homemakers of Amer- ica) was a new organization headed by Mrs. Sharron Williams. The purpose of the FHA is to prepare young adults for homel- ife and to help the community in particular the young and the aged. For example, at Christmas time they went to the Children's Hospital to sing carols to the small children there. So many people were involved with the FHA that it was divided into two groups, Freshman-Sophomore and Junior-Senior. The club is on its way, as it had a great beginning. The Junior-Senior FHA: (seoted) Potty O'Brien, Rosemory Companotta, Brigitte White, Millicent Fuller, Mrs. Wil- liams, (stonding) Susan Accino, Andrea Shaw, Donna Fuller, Wanda McKinney, Kevin Cissell, Carl Canova, Froncene Oddo, and Koren Kurtts. Some of the members of the Freshman-Sophomore FHA. 49 Bank Board Encourages Saving The Bank Board worked very hard this year to keep their coveted trophy which they received for most improved banking. Part of their effort consisted of going to each A.P. on Tuesday and encouraging 100% banking. The John Carroll Bank Board is a Junior Achievement Company working as a board of directors to pro- mote banking. Each Tuesday Mrs. Joe Ragusa an employee of BTNB, and a rep- resentative of Junior Achievement, comes to John Carroll to help the Bank Board moderators encourage 100% banking for the entire school. The moderator of the Band Board was Mrs. Katherine Richards and the officers were as follows: President Yolanda Northorp, Vice-President Anna Brooklere, Cashier Rose Caltagirone and Assistant Cashier Lisa Milazzo. This banking banner represents the goal of the Bank Board — to encourage all A.P.'s to bank 100%. Members of the Bank Board: (seoted) Yolanda Northop, Anna Brooklere, Lisa Milazzo, Rose Caltogirone, (standing) Bernie Graffeo, LaQuita Rudolph, Mike Richards, Phyllis Noro, Mrs. Ragusa, Barbara Evers, Lisa Mundi, Lena LaRussa, and Mrs. Richards. During Halloween, members diligently collected money for UNICEF, a United Nations Organization which helps the less fortu- nate children around the world. The Christ- mas Season saw the Spanish Club visiting Children’s Hospital in order to entertain the children there with exuberant Spanish carols. During the activity meetings throughout the year, members expanded their Spanish vocabulary by playing games printed in Spanish. The Club partici- pated in the International Fair, Mrs. Sonia Dale headed the booth. The Club was a great success and members are looking forward to next year. Uniformity is the key word in this picture with moderator Miss Brown and these club members: Patty Rogato, Katesa Porter, Valerie Westbrook, Sara Sanchez, Cindy Creagan, David Boackle, Howord Scott, Lisa Alexan- der, and Francine Alesci. CSMCAids the Underprivileged 52 The CSMC (Carroll Service to Mankind Corp) has had another year of success under the leadership of Mrs. Ann Marie Nolan and Mr. Larry Smalley, moderators, and the officers. (President Karen Shader, Vice President Gina Antonion, Treasurer Lisa Sharble, Secretary Stacy Harduval) At Thanksgiving the members aided by the Freshman Class, brought holiday baskets laden with food to underprivileged fami- lies. They were also involved with taking some underprivileged children from a gov- ernment project to the zoo. The largest and most involved project was the Queen of Hearts Dance held on February 14. The theme of the dance was A Time For Us.” The dance, as always, was enjoyed by all and made Valentine’s day a little more memorable. Junior and Senior Members of the CSMC: (first row) Mr. Smalley (moderator), Karen Shader, Theresa Ste- phens, Terri Peacock, lisa Sharble, Louis Salvago, Margie Scarvy, Sharon Delong, Mrs. Nolon (moderator), (second row) Anne Flemming, Cathy Albright, Judi Raine, Nancy Shunnaroh, Vicki Montalbono, Cothy Siefert, Jenny Sperando, Laura Kattus, (third row) Debbie Mitchell, Paula Schillaci, Carol McGinnis, Nancy Sowder, Angie McAleer, Ann Dunmyer, Laura Delk, Lisa Milazzo, Patty Burns, (fourth row) Joe Cicio, Greg Yarber, Steve Friend, Steve Gaudin, Steve Herlihy, Karen Jones, Doug Haviland, Joey Contorno, and Joe Collins. The entire CSMC took a break from their busy schedule to crowd the back stairs. The Queen of Heorts Runners-Up: Theresa Stephens, Marcia Baldone, Judy Zarzaur, and Toni Baker. The officers of the CSMC: President Karen Shader, Vice President Gina Antonio, Treasurer Lisa Sharble, and Secretary Stacy Hardivol with Mrs. Nolan, moderator. Theresa Ardivino, Queen of Hearts and Mark Miranda, King of Hearts, well deserve the honor. Band Ignites School Spirit The Band's main function, under the leadership of Mr. Lee Fisher and Drum Major Kay Davis, is to provide mood music at special assemblies and to ignite school spirit at pep rallies, football games, and basketball games. Although the student body does not realize it, the band mem- bers work long hours practicing and pre- paring for different programs. Last year the band represented the school in the Veteran's Day Parade and in a gathering for President Ford's campaign. The band also gave a Spring Concert to raise money and it sponsored a concert in which the famous 50's group The Platters enter- tained the audience with old 50's songs. The proceeds went to buy more uniforms and other essential items. The band did well in state and district competition and it is preparing for next year. Anna Flynn ond Sheri Dore, flute players, pay close attention to Mr. Fisher, their band director. Anthony Tombrello concentrates on keeping in tempo with the music. Linda Alexander intently ploys her instrument. Mr. Lee Fisher, the band director, skillfully con- ducts the band to its best performance. William Harrell and Andrew Wilson (foreground) proudly represent the trumpet section of the Carroll Band. Jimmy Bailey, Kwome Gratten, and Omie Crock- ett diligently practice on their saxophones. 55 Highsteppers Are New Attraction An added attraction to the band last year was the highsteppers. This was the first year that John Carroll had highstep- pers and since it was such a complete suc- cess many years of Carroll highsteppers are sure to follow. Responsible for the great success were Mrs. Jayne Autry, mod- erator; Donna Tombrello, head; Karen Kurtts, co-head. The girls worked hard and performed with the band during football season. During basketball season they performed and they did a routine for Nights of Broadway. John Carroll was proud of their first highsteppers. Co-head, Karen Kurtts, moderator, Mrs. Autry, and head, Donna Tombrello contributed to the success of Carroll's first highsteppers. Highsteppers for 1975-76 were: Joette Smith, Mary Kelly, Donna Tombrello, Karen Kurtts, Cindy Goode, Audrey Laird, Kathy Beard, Terri Peacock, Toni Baker, Suzanne Ardivino, Theresa Hudson and Marie LaBerte. 56 Pep Club Engenders School Enthusiasm The Pep Club is one of the forces which created school spirit and enthusiasm at John Carroll. Under the direction of Mrs. Ann Webhy, the club is responsible for exhibiting the type of school spirit that gets students excited about their school. This year's officers were President, Paula Petix; Vice President, Lena LaRussa; Secre- tary, Lisa Milazzo; Treasurer, Anne Flem- ming. The activities of this club include paint- ing signs for the football and basketball squads and assisting the cheerleaders in selling various items. This year the Pep Club achieved their goal of providing uni- forms (green jerseys) for its members. The jerseys were generally worn during the football games and they were quite attrac- tive. The Pep Club is open to anyone and it encourages all students to show their spirit by participating in its activities. The Pep Club displays the jerseys that help promote school spirit. Moderator Mrs. Ann Webby, Vice President Lena LaRussa, President Paula Petix, and Treasurer Anne Flem- ming take time out to pose for this picture. 57 Business Club Molds Future Business Leaders The main goal of the Business Club is to prepare its members for the business world. The business club, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Katherine Richards and offi- cers Alberta Carlton, President; Cecilia Majerick, Vice President; Wanda McKinney, Secretary; Gail Mallard, Trea- surer, has left its mark on the school through its fund-raising activities. The club has sponsored bake sales to fund the pur- chasing of new equipment for the depart- ment. The members also went on a field trip to gain experience and to observe office procedure. Furthermore, they have contributed service to the community. For Halloween, members fashioned little pres- ents for the members of the Mary Lewis Convalescent Home. During Christmas they visited Children's Hospital. The club promises a better future for those entering the business world. Away from their clicking typewriters, these busi- ness club officers. Treasurer Gail Mallard, Secre- tary Wanda McKinney, Vice President Cecilia Majerick, and President Alberta Carlton, easily relax before the camera. Mrs. Richards, the club moderator, carries on her business in a quick proficient way. The Business Club is an asset to John Carroll due to moderator Mrs. Richards and members Alberto Corlton, Gail Mallard, Cecilia Majerick, Jill Felterman, Verna Robinson, LaQuita Rudolph, Helen Ann Hunter, Kathy Frieling, Christie Tortorici, Joanna Guangrosso, and Wanda McKinney. 58 Junior Civitan Serves the Community Undoubtedly talking over important business, these Junior Civiton Officers, Ann Alosi, Vice President; Laurie Bulgarella, President; Carol Oliver, Secretary; luAnne Socco, Treasurer; Lisa Bulgarella, Sergeant ot Arms, give their full atten- tion to the club moderator, Mrs. Dale. The mod- erator was Mrs. Sonia Dale and the offi- cers were Laurie Bulgarella, president; Ann Alosi, vice president; LuAnn Sacco, trea- surer; and Carol Oliver, secretary. The club collected money for the NARC (National Association for Retarded Citi- zens). The club also had hot chocolate and doughnut sales before school and spon- sored bake sales. The proceeds went towards buying gifts for patients at Cooper Green Hospital during the Christ- mas Season. The Junior Civitan Club had a banquet to charter the club at the Cedars Club in January. The club has been a great suc- cess and promises to be just as successful next year. Chorus Says It With Music The John Carroll High School Chorus was organized under the direction of Sis- ter Frances Bruno and Mr. Lee Fisher. The Chorus sang at P.T.A. meetings and school Masses. Their repertoire consisted of all types of music: popular, classical, and madrigals. They practiced every Tuesday afternoon after school and during Thurs- day morning activity period. Anyone was eligible for membership. The Chorus was quite successful and has confidence that the 1976-77 Chorus will be just as success- ful. Lift every voice ond sing . . The club was organized and moderated by Mrs. Helen Miller, Mrs. Catherine Sper- ando, and Sister Dominica Rigotti. The president was David Talley. The club provided a tutoring service and also monitored in the Math Resource Center. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the club was the several award win- ning math students that belonged to the Mu Alpha Theta. John Carroll had another first! David Talley was number one in the state in the National Math Association of American Contest, and the only one in Alabama who made the Southeastern Division Honor Roll. Tom Miller was Mike Pilmon and Doug Reyman confer over Mu Alpha Theta business. also in the top ten in the state. John Carroll was also number one in the state in math on this test, based on the sum total of the scores of team members Tal- ley, Miller, and Jim Moore. The first tournament of the year was at Huffman High on January 23. The Fresh- man team of John Boackle, Carol Delk, Pierre, and David Sullivan placed first. During the Christmas Season the club planned a dinner party at Angie Peterson's house. The dinner con- sisted of all sorts of delicious tasting foods and delicacies. Members of the Club also attended a state convention in Huntsville in order to elect a president and other offi- cers for the National Federation of Ger- man Students. In March the German Club had a party at the German Club down- town. The purpose of this party was to stimulate and spread German culture to all those who attended. An addition of a Ger- man Band was made, consisting of Mr. Lee Fisher, Richard Krumdiek, Laura Bird, Wil- liam Harrell, and Charlotte Bell. This Ger- man band performed at the International Fair. All in all, it was a good year. 65 The Dramatics Club Produces The Italian Straw Hat The Italian Straw Hat was the 1975 fall play under the direction of Miss Hilda Horn. The play was centered around a bri- degroom and his misfortunes concerning a certain Italian straw hat. The bridegroom is driving back to Paris on his wedding morn- ing when his horse happens to eat a straw hat hanging on a tree. The hat belongs to a young married woman who is keeping a rendezvous with a military man. To protect the lady’s honour, the bridegroom is given the task of finding an identical hat as quickly as possible. Chip Estes was the bridegroom, Fadinard, and his bride-to-be was Kathy Dwyer, Helen. The hard work of the cast com- bined with the faithfulness of the various committees produced a comedy enjoyed by all. A special recognition goes to the faculty moderators of these committees: Miss Therese Flanagan, Mrs. Katherine Richards, Mrs. Sonia Dale, and Mrs. Shar- ron Williams. This was the first drama performed in many years and it was a great success. Miss Hilda Horn was the director and the leading man was Paul LaRussa and the leading woman was Gin- ger Ferlisi. Paul was Charlie Gordon and Ginger was Alice Kinnian. Other lead characters were Terrence Hawkins, Dr. Jay Strauss and Billy Lucas, Prof. Harold Nemur. The various committees with mod- erators Miss Therese Flanagan, Mrs. Kath- erine Richards, Mrs. Sonia Dale, and Mrs. Sharron Williams contributed greatly to the success of the play. The play was about a mentally retarded man, Charlie Gordon, who has the chance to become extremely smart by means of an experi- mental operation. This operation had only been performed on a mouse named Alger- non. At first the operation is a complete success, Charlie becomes a genius and falls in love with Alice Kinnian. However, he regresses and loses all his “artificial intelligence and the mouse Algernon dies. The end is very moving for Charlie realizes what he has lost, he leaves Alice In one of the most moving scenes of the play. The Cavalier Captures School Life The CAVALIER staff this year has won several awards: a second place interna- tional award from Quill and Scroll and a second place award in the Spring Hill Jour- nalism contest. Again this year the paper has realized a profit due to the work of the staff and the support of the student body. A change in staff organization has been the election of two page editors per page, rather than one per page. Two business managers were also elected. Two eight page papers were published this year, at which time eight other students had the opportunity to serve as editors, thus giving all class members this experience and responsibility. The staff has made an effort to cover all aspects of school and community life and to responsibly represent the school and community at large. The CAVALIER Staff: Saralynn Segears, Mss King, Lisa Caldwell, Kay Hogan, Laura David, Gail Phillips, Rose Caltigirone, Vicki Montalbano, Maria Gilmore, David Knobloch, Matt Scalisim, John Sarcone, Kelly Peevy, Ginger Ferlisi, and James Ribe. 71 Lauro David ond Matt Scalisi select pictures for the upcoming edition. NHS Recognizes Deserving Students The primary purpose of the National Honor Society is to recognize those out- standing juniors and seniors who have excellent scholastic and service records. The qualities of leadership and character are also considered when the NHS selec- tively chooses its members. The new members are chosen at a Fall tapping for seniors and a Spring tapping for juniors. I Yolanda Northrop ond Edie Moore, the senior NHS inductees, recite the pledge. This year the senior tapping, tradition- ally held only during a senior class meet- ing, was held during a school assembly instead. Similarly, the junior tapping was also held during a school wide assembly. This year a skit pointing out the common stereotype associated with the National Honor Society was staged in place of a guest speaker. Later, after the tapping, the inductees were presented individually to the school body as Mr. LaPlante described each inductee. The signing of the register and the administering of the oath then fol- lowed and the inductees and their parents adjourned to the Home Ec Room for refreshments. The new members of the society are looking forward to next year and all of them certainly plan to merit this honor bestowed upon them. Maria Gilmore, Yolanda Northorp, Mike Virgo, Rosie Evans, Pot Lavette, Cecilia Majerik, Lisa Mundi, Paula Pet.x, Moderator Sister Susan, Beth Lotz, Gina Antonio, Gail Pugh, Mary Jo Smith, Carol Estock, Barbara Schamalz, Karen Riley, John Sarcone, Julie Brokenbourgh, Art Tipton, Lena LaRussa and Jim Remmert are the proud members of the 1975-76 NHS. 72 New inductee Anna Hamel awaits her turn to sign the Society's register. I Tom Miller, senior NHS member, escorts new inductee Mary Claire Wells. Gail Pugh lights a candle at the Senior tapping ceremony. 73 The International Fair is Unity Within Variety The International Fair provided unity within variety for the students and faculty of John Carroll. The fair is a product of the Interracial Committee, headed by Miss Hilda Horn. The purpose of the fair is to give the students a better understanding of various cultures, not to mention the fact that it was a fund raising project for the many clubs that participated. Many peo- ple were involved with the fair and worked for many hours towards the success of the fair. The fair was an enjoyable evening for all those who attended and all those who worked. Live entertainment added a little spice and, in general, the fair created an air of good times and unity. The African booth featured exotic food and jewelry. Connie Tran, Mary Christine Nguyen, and Rosalie Nguyen proudly display their native costumes and their deli- cious food at the Vietnamese booth. 74 Stephen Boohaker, how dare you eat, drink, and be merry while poor Sharon Tanory works her fin- gers to the bone! The new library has been enlarged by about 4,000 square feet and its interior has been aesthetically renovated. The new shelves are buttercup yellow, the new car- pet is rust orange, and the walls have been painted shades of yellow. Room 202 has been transformed into a periodical refer- ence and audio-visual room where stu- dents can look up information in maga- zines and newspapers. Bookshelves have been placed in the old locker area and the corridor has been made into a periodical unit. All in all, the new library is a great addition to the school and every Carroll student should show his pride in using it wisely. I In the library one can learn all sorts of interesting things, even how to buy a lown mower. Mrs. Clay, heod librarian, ponders intently on an important library matter. I Moses Williams, Robert Parmenfier, Damien Cusick, and another boy need the quiet atmosphere of the library to concentrate on their chess game. I Mike Virgo explores one of the many educational sources the library has to offer. Latin Club Ads to Curriculum John Carroll is always meeting the demands of the students by creating new clubs in areas that students have an inter- est. The Latin Club is an example. The stu- dents belonging to this club generally meet during activity periods on Thursday. They are quite dedicated and thoroughly enjoy reading about ancient Romans in Latin. Under the leadership of Moderator Sister Catherine Flynn, President Lisa Boykin and officer Joyce Williams, the Latin Club has had a successful first year and is sure to become an asset to the John Carroll curric- ulum. 77 Resource Centers Provide Studious Atmosphere The resource centers provide o quiet atmosphere conducive to studying for the students during their unscheduled mods. The various resource centers are the math, religion, English, language, social studies, home ec, science and business. Each one supplies information for its particular sub- ject area. Teachers are available for extra help. Volunteer mothers and students aid in monitoring the various centers. The resource centers are just one more great thing about John Carroll. Home Ec students review various sewing patterns in the Home Ec Lob. Thereso Hornbuckle finds a comfortable little niche m the Religion Resource Center. Julie Varagono and Kathy Beard compare essays in the English resource center. Mary Claire Wells and Sara Sanchez do research in the Social Studies Resource Center. 78 Disaster Team Is Asset to Community (The disaster team officers are Paula Deason, Second Lieutenant, Jim Coker, Captain, and Koren Kurtts, First Lieutenant. The Disaster Team proved their interest in the safety of the John Carroll community through their continuous efforts to inform the school on how to react during times of emergency. The team organized several fire and tornado drills during the year and also provided their services to disasters local, national, and international. The offi- cers were Jim Coker, Captain; Karen Kurtts, First Lieutenant; Paula Deason, Sec- ond Lieutenant. The team worked hard under the direction of these officers and made the 1975-76 school year a year to be proud of. Members of the Disaster Team are Poula Deason, Alma Wiemar, Jeanie Bruzzese, Sara Wiemar, Shelia Brown, Betsy Bottle, Karen Kurtts, Becky Deese, Kathy Kurtts, Mary Jane Pennington, Mary Lee Bogan, Anna Hamel, Bill Watson, Charles Decker, Malcolm Shannon, Greg Yarber, Mike Pilmon, David Henning, and Jim Coker. 79 Class Officers Show Leadership The class officers elected by the various classes, led the individual classes in the various activities that the class participated in. Not pictured are the Freshman class officers who were: President Lisa Boykin, Vice President Benny Bonner, Secretary Terri Roscoe, and Treasurer Mary Meyer. The Sophomore Class Officers: Vice President Jockie Robinson, Secretary Renee Elliot, President Theresa Seifert, and Treasurer Suzanne Ardo- vino. The Junior Class Officers: President Bobby Kelly, Secretary Barbara Evers, Treasurer Donna Tombrello, and Vice President Andre Juneau. Liturgy Strengthens Community Spiritually Paula Deason, Jim Coker and Alma Wiemor, members of the Senior Liturgy Team, take a minute to discuss liturgy plans. _________ Liturgical worship plays an extremely important role in the student life at John Carrol. The Eucharistic celebration and the Word of God help to strengthen the faith of the community. In order to guide the students in their personal growth, the chaplain devotes himself to their problems and needs. Father Frank Muscolino, who dedicatedly supported the students for the past few years, left at the beginning of the school year. In order to continue to encourage the students in their spiritual growth, a team of chaplains carries on his work. These chaplains are Fr. Richard Sasc, Fr. Matthew Brennan, Fr. Kevin Wal- ton, Sr. Mary McGed, Fr. Paul Rohling, Fr. Eugene O'Connor, and Fr. Frank Giardino. Angela Lott has proved to be a hard worker through her many planned Junior liturgies. Father Muscolino A John Carroll graduate. Father Frank Muscolino has been the chap- lain at John Carroll for the last five years. Father is no longer with us, but has established a very beneficial Chaplain Service for our Commu- nity. Father Muscolino is now the Per- manent Diaconate Director, Dioce- san Director of Vocations, and the newly elected National President of Vocation Directors. Our sincere thanks and best wishes go out to him for his service to the John Carroll Community. Sara Wiemor ond Paul Willet have worked diligently on many Sophomore liturgies. 81 The students also involve themselves in the liturgy by forming a liturgy team which represents each class. The team members are: Seniors Paula Deason, Jim Coker, and Alma Wiemar; Juniors Angela Lott and John Lyman; Sophomores Paul Willet and Sara Wiemar; Freshmen Ada Hudson and Joe Renno. These students help to prepare both the class and student-body Masses during the year. Because of the dedicated work of these students and chaplains, the faith of the community is continually strengthened. Once again John Carroll students demonstrate their generosity as shown by this food loden offertory headed by Anthony Bruno and Louis Salvage. 82 The Celebration of the Eurcharist is sacred to all. I One of the many religious statues seen through- 1 I out the school. 1 85 Football Team Fosters Good Times The football team, under the direction of Head Coach James McNally, Coach Walden, Coach Hatchett, and Coach Hamilton, had a respectable season this year. After many tedious hours of spring training, the Cavs opened their season with a victory over the Pinson Valley Indi- ans. Carroll’s rugged defense held the Indians at bay throughout the game and the final score, 14-12, was proof of Car- roll’s determination to persevere. The fol- lowing games were not as successful, but the team put forth great effort every time so that the opposing teams did not win easily. The next victorious game was a tre- mendous upset over Fairfield. The Cavs put forth their best and after four action- packed quarters they finally brought in the 10-7 score that doomed Fairfield. The Ramsey game was also another highlight for the team. The game was a spine-tin- gling see-saw battle, but the Cavs pulled through on top with a 28-23 score. The team, as a result of hard work and much sacrifice, has come a long way since last year and all its members are looking forward to a better future. The B-Team Cheerleaders were: Lisa Pharo, Rita Alfano, Peggy Anderson, Denise Nel- son and Darcel Waters. These girls worked very hard under the leadership of Paulette, Marilyn and Moderator Mrs. Casey. They planned pep rallies, worked with Toy Bowl Cheerleaders, painted signs and, in gen- eral, gave the school spirit. The Cheerlead- ers attended Clinic at Auburn University and came home with a second place tro- phy. The girls fulfilled their job very well and livened up the sports at John Carroll. The week held many unexpected pleasures for the outgoing Carrollites. On Thursday, the night before Homecoming, a fabu- lously high bonfire was lit. Anyone who had seen the sight would have said that the high spirited blazes were symbolic of John Carroll. The night that everyone had so impa- tiently awaited had arrived. A homecom- ing assembly honored the football players and everyone cheered them on to victory. At the game the Homecoming Queen, Karen Shader and her Court, proudly lined the field sponsoring individual senior foot- ball members. The game ended with a vic- tory over Carroll. This dashing lead singer gave Carroll dancers a night of musical entertainment. The defeat merely dampened the spirit of the Cavs but they did not let it get them down. Everyone showed the everlasting spirit by attending the dance. The King and Queen of School Spirit, Matt Scalici and Lena Ceravolo, were crowned. The Homecoming of John Carroll was as exciting and as spirited as the Carrollites made it. I've got the boogie fever. . Karen Shader, Homecoming Queen; Lena Ceravolo, Queen of School Spirit; and Matt Scalici, King of School Spirit, truly deserved their titles. ___________________________________ Teresa Tricia happily extends a bouquet of roses to the newly crowned Karen Shader. 91 Coif Team Has Good Record The golf team had one of its best records in Carroll history. Their impressive record was 16 wins and 8 losses. The high point of the year was the Regional Golf Championships held in Tuscaloosa April 23. They came home with fourth place. Coach Hayes took the team to Willow Point over AEA holidays to play one of the finest courses in Alabama. Rob King was the top man on the team followed by Mike Rueve and Billy Thorton. Chip Estes and Tom Miller went to the State Champion- ship. The boys had a great year and are looking forward to next year. The Golf Team: Glen Thatcher, Mike Rueve, Tom Miller, Jimmy Sullivan, Felix Jones, Tommy Vocarello, Pro les Woodin, Billy Thorton, Rob King, Chip Estes, Kris Kean, Coach Hayes and Pro Nick Catanzano. 92 Ciris' Volleyball Team Spikes Way to Victory John Carroll's volleyball team is coached by Mrs. Casey and Mrs. Bird. After several tryouts, the team was finally narrowed down to twelve girls. This year's team consists of seniors Carolyn LeBeau, Mary Remke, Martha Bahakel, and Anne Turner; juniors Anna Hamel and Mary Walters; and sophomores Mary Leah Bog- gan, Jackie McCall, Bridget McNally, Lor- raine Rogers, Kim Thomas, and Katie Wal- ters. In pre-season practice games the team won one and lost one to Ramsay. The team upset Homewood, one of the top- seeded teams, in a tournament held November 8. The games were 15-3 and 15-7. However, in the game, John Carroll lost to Huffman 7-15, 6-15, and 8-15. Mrs. Casey hopes to form an Independent League with other schools which are not in the city or county system. These members of the volleyball team, Anna Hamel, Anne Turner, Martha Bahakel, Jackie McCall, Loroine Rogers, Kim Thomas, Bridget McNally, Mary Leah Boggan, Mary Walters and Katie Wolters show off their new uniforms. Diving Team Carroll’s one man diving team, Mark Moynihan, entered the Tusca- loosa State meet and hoped to achieve first place in the Alabama State Boy’s Diving competition. Well, his wish came true and he dove himself into the number one spot. Mark should be wholeheart- edly congratulated for his hard work and dedication. 93 Basketball Team Cains Experience Under the leadership of Coach Dan Moore, the 1975-76 John Carroll basket- ball team completed a record of 6 wins, 1 4 losses. The team began practice in April undergoing a weight program, run- ning, and scrimmages for the season which began in December. When asked about his team. Coach Moore said I was happy with the team, they have good spirit. They work well together as a team. My under- classmen came through to help us. I appre- ciate the hard work. I think we achieved what we started out to achieve. The track season began with Indoor Track. Although the season ended quickly, the team did attend two meets. One meet was held in Auburn and the other meet was held in Montgomery. The team fin- ished respectably at both these meets and the experience gained paid off in the Out- door Season. The Outdoor Track season began very well and John Carroll won the 3A competi- tion for the third straight year at the Sec- tional Track meet finals at Berry High. The following placed in their respective events: Shot Put Rob Drawford, first and Sam Scozzaro, second; 440 Relay John Car- roll, third; Mile Run Allan Wallace; Pole vault Rob Stano, second; Discus Scozzaro, first; Two-Mile run Da.: Bahakel, first and John Duchock, fourth; 880 run Wallace, first, and Bahakel, fourth; 330 Intermedi- ate hurdles David Sherrill, first, and Benjie Gray, second; 120 High hurdles Sherrill, first, and Gray, second; and in the mile relay, John Carroll was fourth. In the Girls’ Competition, John Carroll was third. Mary Leah Boggan was second in discus; Kim Zanaty, first in 440 dash, and second in 220 dash; and the team was third in the mile relay. Coach Walden took only a small group to the Alabama Relays on April 24 in Tus- caloosa. David Sherrill got fourth place in 120-yard high hurdles with a 15.4. Rob Crawford came in fifth in the shot put. David Bahakel ran his best in the two-mile run with a 10.1. Richard Bahakel had a 2.04 in the 180-yard run, his best yet. 97 Allen Wallace bides his time. Allen Wallace comes from behind. j | Allen Wollace is victorious. John Carroll won the varsity section of the Gardendale Invitational on April 17. High scores came from Rob Crawford in shot put, with Sam Scozzaro second; Sam Scozzaro first in the discus; Mile relay team of Benjie Gray, Richard Bahakel, Alan Wallace, Bobby Kelly, and David Sherrill, second in the 120-yard high hur- dles; Alan Wallace second in the 880 yard dash; David Bahakel first in the two mile run. The John Carroll girls' track team came in second at Gardendale. Mary Leah Bog- gan won the shot and discus and Kim Zanaty won the 220-yard dash. Some personal records were set at the Rocket City Invitational, April 9 and 10, in Huntsville; Rob Crawford threw the shot 48'5 , Robert Stano pole vaulted 10', and David Sherrill ran a 15.1 in the high hur- dles. The cross-country team went to Tusca- loosa for the state with high hopes this year and finished a respectable fourth. Richard Bahakel was top man for Carroll, finishing fifth. The others in Carroll’s top five were Allen Wallace, ninth; Johnny Ragusa, nineteenth; and an ailing John Duchock finished thirtieth. Benjie Gray leaps over tall hurdles in a single bound. 98 Outstanding cross-country has almost become a tradition at John Carroll with teams finishing in the top four in the state for the past five years. Coach Walden feels that this year’s team could have placed higher if it had not been for bad breaks. 99 Ciris' and Boys' Tennis Teams Are Successful The Girls' Tennis Team was a new sport this year and had a very successful year. The girls practiced diligently under the supervision of Coach Brown at Altamont's courts. They plan to practice throughout the summer months. At the International Fair the girls had a booth. The proceeds bought new tennis balls. Tennis Team members Anna Brookleere, Terri Garcia, Von Nelson, Frances Sheehan, Mary Jo Smith, Dianne Naro, Karen Resha, and Sara Sanchez give their rackets a rest and take a picture. Coach Brown and Mrs. Washington discuss stra- tegies for the next tennis meet. I Mary Jo Smithe plans to deliver a devastating return. 100 The Boys’ Tennis Team was also a new sport and had a good first year. The boys practiced several times a week at Memo- rial Park downtown. Mr. Washington helped the boys tremendously and they are all looking forward to next year. The Boys' team really practices hard. Richard Giardina mokes sure that his boll will not be returned. The newly formed boys' tennis team members are Charlie Cloud, Joe Bostany, Danny Burrus, Andre Washing- ton, Paul Coyle, Jerry Sherrill, Richard Gardiana and Tom Pennington. 101 102 Baseball Team Has Fine Season The baseball team, under the direction of Coach Hamilton and Coach Hatchett, had a respectable season this year. Practice began early in March after AEA so that the boys could improve their plays before the season opened. The daily after school prac- tice really paid off when the team brought in their first victory against Mountain Brook (7-6). The team then went on to triumph over Leeds as 3-1. Although these victories were tempered with a few losses, the team demolished Thompson 19-4. The Thompson game was led by pitcher Mark Miranda and Bobby Kabase. Ronnie Boackle tripled to bring in two runs during the game. MacAdory, 6- 4 and 9-2, fell victim twice to Carroll’s fine pitching hitting. The combination of Chris Holtaclaw at first, Paul Blackstone at second, Ralph Ritchey at third (when he was not pitching), Joe Sullivan at shortstop, Bobby Kabase in left field, Mark Miranda on the pitcher's mound was too much for Mountain Brook the second time around. The score, 5-3, was close but, the determination of the team put Carroll on top with a victory. The season ended with Joe Sullivan and Mark Miranda claiming the highest batting average of the team. The B-Team, with its enthusiastic players had a very fine season and these future varsity players are looking forward to next year. The 1975-76 Baseball Team: Ricky Schillaci, Steve Friend, Carl lotz, Steve Dichiara, Phillip Romei, Rick Grun- dhoffer, Paul Blackstone, Sommy Musso, Bobby Kabase, Steve Herlihy, Ronald Boackle, Robert Ritchey, Coach Hatchett, Chris Holtz, Phil Beilina, Randall Shaw, Brian McCarthy, Joe Sullivan, Ralph Ritchey, Mark Miranda, and Coach Hamilton. Student-Faculty Basketball Came Adds Variety In order to initiate new activities and add a little spice to the sports at John Car- roll, the Student Council sponsored a Stu- dent-Faculty Basketball game. The week before the game an air of excitement pre- vailed as preparations were made. The Faculty won the game but the students were good sports about it. After all, there is always next year! Bill Griffin scores one more point for the Students. Contrary to popular belief, Randall Show is not trying out for the lead in the ballet Swan Lake, but rather has just made another bosket. (Coach Hatchett in background) Cooch Hatchett shoots onother basket for the Faculty. 106 America 1976, a Year to Remember 107 Just being around on the Carroll campus and being friends with all the students. The most memorable event was when the beeps got stuck and drove every- body up the wall. 110 “This year of 1975-1976 has had one memorable event which I feel is impor- tant and that is the fact that we are so close knit, like a family, and have such a great school, faculty, and scheduling, that we have been accredited and “we” are the 1 school.” 12 13 114 “The People. “This year has brought me Her life should be an inspiration to us all for she was truly Christian. She made many good times for everyone she came in contact with. She was someone special to all of us. Her outlook on life during her struggle was more than enough to make you want to keep fighting in your life. She never wasted her time on self-pity or grudges. In the few short years Cheryl spent with us she filled our lives with her peace, determination, concern, and most of all her love for Christ and her fellowman. Cheryl may have died in body, but we will remember her inspiring Christian attitude — her determination to live. The setting was a crystal pal- ace to carry out the theme Crystal by the Buckingham Nicks. Moderators and members of the theme and decorating committees were John Duchock, Judy Raine, Carol Estock, Kathy Dwyer, Marcia Baldone, Tricia Baldone, Mrs. Sykes and Miss Flanagan. Carole Estock delivers the senior address Class Day Creates Cherished Memories The Class Day activities began with a delicious breakfast in the cafeteria. Later in the day the graduates returned in their caps and gowns to celebrate the Class Day program. Following the entrance pro- cession and the National Anthem, John Duchock gave a welcome speech. The class song Where are you going to? from Mahogany and the class poem by Paul LaRussa, stressed the future of the class of 1976. The senior address was then delivered by Carole Estock. She pointed out the valuable role that the fac- ulty and the administration had played in the lives of the students. Awards were then presented and outstanding seniors were honored with scholarships or medals. Finally a multi-media show was presented. It featured slides of the seniors and was accompanied by musical selections. Class Day was officially over and the graduates marched out to the rhythm of Pomp and Circumstance.” Yum, yum, yum, thinks Sam Scozzaro as Chris Tortorici and Rob Crawford awoit their food. The weather was beautiful, in fact, no John Carroll graduation has ever been rained out. The guest speaker was Father Michael Sexton. Mr. LaPlante presided over the ceremonies and Monsignor Houck and Bishop Vath made a few comments. Those who received honors were recognized and each happy graduate received his or her diploma. Tom Godwin, Benjie Gray, and Bill Griffin line up for their diplomas. Gina Antonio and Mike Lusco dance off the field after receiving their long-awaited diplomas. Eva Gugliotta happily receives her diploma from Bishop Vath. Who me? Yes you, Joe Bostany, you're graduating! 144 ------------- Helen Alderson The world is so empty if one thinks only of mountains, rivers and cities; but to know someone here and there who thinks and feels with us, and who, though distant, is close to us in spirit, this makes the earth for us an inhabited garden. Do you remember when we were asked to be editors?” “How could I forget? And how about that Auburn Yearbook Workshop when we did the Bunny Hop down the dorm hall at 2 A.M.?' “Must you remind me? Those times, like the time we rushed to make our first deadline, best be forgotten. “Well Sara, look at the bright side, meeting one deadline out of three isn't too bad. I must admit, without the help of our staff, Belmont Studio, Eveyln Merrin and Mr. Stricklin we would have never made it!” “And we can't forget the business staff, Martha Bahakel, LaQuita Rudolph and Mr. Ranelli. It was touch and go there for a while but they came through and raised the money.” “Yeh Sara, it’s been a long year but all the arguments, headaches, and long hours of hard work were worth the effort. Have a nice summer, see ya next year!” And that’s the way it was June 1, 1976. 200 • ' Ti' .i 1 '
