The members of the staff sign up and are selected by the advisor and members of the editorial staff based on their interest, capability, and depend- ability. Each Warhawk contains articles of news from Kindergarten through the twelth grade, articles about school hap- penings, a teacher of the month, and 2 students of the month. All of the stu- dents at J.C.C.A. thoroughly enjoy The Warhawk. Activities 27 The Broadcasting Club, in its fourth year of existance, broadcasts on Saturday afternoon over WALD. The weekly program consists of campus news, school happenings, sports, com- edy, and county interests, and also features pop- ular albums. The club is a member of the State Association of Broadcasters, and participates in the Highschool News Quiz Contest offered by the University of South Carolina. In 1978 the club won two state awards for programming. The Senior class of 1970 started the tradition of wearing Halloween cos- tumes to school. The class of 1980 followed in respectable tradition with some outlandish costumes. 38 Activities 1. Wow! When she’s not putting out fires, she’s Activities 39 Christmas At J.C.C.A. 40 Activities On Wednesday, December 5, 1979, John C. Calhoun Academy held its annual Christmas Bazaar from 5:30-8:30 P.M. Headed up by Gail Howell and Barbara Crosby, the bazaar was a great success in raising a little over $3500. The departments at the bazaar were as follows: Christmas, Grandmother, Low Country Crafts, Country Store, and Dessert. After practicing a week in advance, both teams exper- ienced total chaos. After some unpre- dicted calls by the refs., the Jrs, de- feated the Srs. 8 to 6. 1. Seniors are sponsored before the game. 2. Senior Debbie Witsell calmly awaits the big game. 3. Meditating before the game. 4. Hawk teammates summing up the situation. The varsity football team, coached by “Red” Bounds, showed much effort and determination through- out the year, but were able only to capture one victory. Their new coach was assisted by Richard Smith, Bruce Wimberly, and Rev. Archie Evans. They showed much interest in the outcome of each game, and helped shape up the moral of the team. Coach Bounds said the record was an improve- ment over last year but not as much as he had hoped. Next year is hoped to be much better with the upcoming boys from the junior var- sity squad. 1. With a new coach, they did surprisingly well and ended with a 4-3 record. Assisting the coach were Jackie Bridge and Morris Pye who helped considerably throughout the year. The boys are looking forward to a better season next year and plan to have many thrilling and close games. The volleyball team, consisting of girls ranging from the 9th to 12th grades, was formed this year with the help of their coach, Miss Mary Baker. This first year they won only two games. It is hopeful that next year, with more experience they will have a better season. The girls participated in a tournament held here in our gym. They attended a national cheerleader camp at the University of Georgia and learned many new techniques and ideas to encourage support for our athletic teams. The cheerleaders have done a great job! The people who have the most spirit are our cheerleaders. They show devo- tion to the players and let them know that they are behind them one hun- dred percent. They also encourage the students to show that same devo- tion. The cheerleaders are there to comfort a loss and shout for a victory. I is —ore than willing to make this basket GOOD! 5 Steve looks for the open man who'll make a sure two. 3 The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team had an im- pressive 8-3 record at the season’s halfway mark. This year’s team, under the direction of first-year coach, Richard Smith, had showed the ability to win another state championship. The Hawk’s three losses came at the hands of Sum- ter, Calvary of Savannah, and Windsor Acade- my of Macon. J.C.C.A. fans are assured that our boys will do their best to win that coveted State Championship. The annual staff was unable to write the outcome of the season due to an early deadline, but we’re sure that our boys will come out on top. 1. Lance drives to the hoop and scores! 2. Rhonda bombs for two as the defense looks on helplessly. 4. After breaking the huddle, our Hawks are ready to win! Sports 69 The Varsity Girls Basketball Team, coached by Mrs. Mary Welch, had compiled a 4-6 re- cord midway through the sea- son. Despite the loss of Becky Smith due to an ankle injury, the girls had showed great improve- ment and the ability to be num- ber one. This year the girls team hopes to surpass last year’s sea- son and win their first state championship. 1. It looks even; but a blue shirt always comes up with the ball. 2. Debbie can outrun them all! 3. 5 reaches but there is no way she’s goint to stop Terry’s shot from going in. 4. Debbie throws the belli to one of her teammates. 70 Sports 1. Mark goes for two as Bubba and Bruce watch intensely! John overpowers the College Prep player! Bruce comes out with a big RE- BOUND! In the middle of the season, the J.V. Boys have done quite well and have accomplished a record of 4-4. In their remaining games, the annual staff wish- es them the very best of luck and much success. Jay Welch, their new coach, has done a very good job of conditioning and strengthening the boys for this season. Due to our early deadline date we are unable to announce the final outcome of the boys’ season. 74 Sports J.V. Girls Basketball 1. Beth aims for the basket. 2. Girls, coached by Mary B. Welch, have been trying very hard to have a successful season. The girls have played a good number of games, but so far have only captured one victory. We hope the girls will achieve their goal of success by the end of the season. M'iMS I 1. Beth passes over the defensive player. 2. Tandy draws the foul as she goes up for two! 3. All the players scramble for the loose ball! 76 Sports Sports 77 Baseball ’79 The baseball team, coached by John Welch, finished their season with a fantastic record of 10-5. They managed to become second in their conference with Thomas Heyward taking first. They would have cer- tainly been a cinch for a tournament winner, had they participated in one. Two of the players who graduat- ed last year are now playing college baseball. They are Richard Davis, who is playing for The Citadel, and Tony Langdale who now plays for Erskine. 7 8 Sports 1. It’s too low. Sports 83 79 Boys’ Tennis The boys tennis team coached by Kenny Rowe fin- ished their season with a record of 5-4. Coach Rowe was pleased with last year’s season, but is looking forward to an even more successful year. 1. Please don’t go out! 2. 1 don’t think I can make it! 3. I’ll get it! 4. Sports 85 79 Girls’ T ennis The girls tennis team, coached by Tom- my Godwin, had a very successful sea- son. They finished the year with an out- standing record of 10 wins and only 2 losses. The girls also had very good indi- vidual records. Unfortunately they did not participate in any tournaments, but they proved that they were certainly ca- pable of it. We hope that next year will be as great, even better, for our girls tennis team. Good Luck! 86 4 1. Gosh, Pm tired! 2. Let’s see them return this one! 3. Good follow through, 4. Well, maybe it’ll get over! 5. Jump high and swing! 87 The golf team, coached by Bud Steadman, had a remarkably good season. With eleven opponents scheduled, they won ten losing only one. Two of the games were canceled. They partici- pated in the State Tournament at Hilton Head but after one day of play they returned to Walterboro because of the weather. At the Athletic Banquet Paul Steadman received the Most Valuab- ble player award and Philip McNair received the Most Improved player award. 3 1. Trefney tries for a hole in one. 2.
