To construct a better annual, six members attended an annual workshop at Wofford College during the summer. Mrs. Netties, Cheryl Carroll, Joy Padgett, Ginny Sams, Terry Grayson, and Tara Hudson learned many new techniques such as; the uses of spot color, full color, new layout designs, and uses of graphic designs. The staff would like to thank Mr. Mrs. John Truluck and Mrs. Wendell Henderson for allowing us to use their homes for some of our pictures. Activities 35 Halloween Carnival 36 Acti vities On October 31, 1978, the annual Halloween Carnival was held at John C. Calhoun Academy. After much planning and hard work, it was a success. Some of the old and many new booths were set up. Two of the outstanding new booths were the Wheel of Fortune and the Disco room, but all the booths and the willingness and cooperation of the students and parents contributed to the fun for all at the Halloween Carnival. Actrvities 43 44 Activities Varsity Football The varsity's record this year did not come close to showing the real story. They did not win any games, but during the entire season they never gave up. They played every game with the same determination in the second half as they had in the first. Many of the games were close but we just didn't get the right breaks, 1. Good play! 2. What a pile-up. 3. Drive through there! 3 46 Sports Sports 47 11 Good football teams often loose games. It takes a GREAT team to give maximum effort ail of every game even though loosing. The young men on this team are a credit to their coaches, their school, and themselves. I will never be prouder of any team than I am of this one.11 Marion Sams Jr. 1. Pull that boy down. 2. A little tete a tete.โ 3. Throw the ball. 1. Defense! Defense! 2. The pfay is over, you can stop hitting now. 3. Get that manย 4. Hurry! 50 Sports 1. Hut one! Hut 2ยซ 2. Catch that man, 3. You got him! Sports 51 The junior varsity football team did not have quite the same season as last years but they still played well this year. They had a season record of 3-5, with many close and exciting games. 1. Run! Run! 2. Sack the quarterback. 3. Could it be a reverse? 4. Tackle him! 52 Sports Sports 53 v โ ' ' . 1. Varsity Cheerleaders Ann Bowers Lisa Dyches Marsha Steedly Gaby Covington Nancy Black Bonnie Phillips Ginny Sams Dawn Tucker Ann Erwin 56 Varsity Cheerleaders What would it be like without cheerleaders? Cheerleaders arouse school spirit and lead our pep rallies. They are there to cry when a game is lost in the final seconds by a fiefd goal or a last minute basket. Cheerleaders also rejoice with the players and fans when a game is victorious. Cheerleaders bring the players and fans closer together so that they can cheer their team onto victory. Varsity Cheerleaders 57 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders 58 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders Junior Varsity CheerIeaders 59 Sports 61 1, Get by that guard! 2, Nice dribbling. 3, Great defense coverage. 4, Go after that ball! The varsity boys' basketball team has had an extremely good season. Their record is 23-1 with the one loss to Savannah Christian. Due to an early deadline date, the Talon does not have the results of the tournaments. We regret this deeply, but wish the team the best. We know who will come out on top. Sports 63 Girls Varsity Basketball 1. Don't let her steal it! 2. Cynthia goes up for 2 more points. 3. Keep the defense up. 64 5 ports Things look better for the Varsity Girls than they have in many years. With all the starters of last year, plus some new players from J.V. the girls have a great chance to go to State, So far they have only 2 losses on their records. One of these came in the Savannah Holiday Classic where they finished with a third place trophy. Going into tournament action the girls' record was 18-5. The Talon staff regrets that no tournament records could be given due to an early deadline date, but we hope that' the girls come out on top! We are sure they will! Sports 65 1. Setting up the play 2. Support from the bench! 3. Lu gets off a pass 4. Becky moves to the basket! 66 Sports 1. Cynthia aims for the hoop. 2. Marsha overpowers two defensive players! 3. Struggles in the lane! Sports 67 1. Nobody can stop Eley from making two! 2. Socha goes up for the lay-up! 3. Hydrick brings the ball down court. The Junior Varsity boys ended the season with a record of 11-7, The Baby Hawks featured a team consisting of boys ranging from 6th grade to 10th grade. Although the J.V. regional tournament was cancelled, the boys showed stamina and the ability to be No. 1. throughout the season. Warhawk fans have an exciting basketball future to look forward to. 63 5 ports 1. Think he'lf make it? 2. Just one more before the clock runs out. 3. Sheldon brings down an impressive rebound. 4. Blocked shots are our game. 5. Sheldon puts it up again. Sports 69 70 S ports mm The Junior Varsity girls finished the season with an outstanding record of 14-2. The girls have equalled the best record that a J.V. girls basketball team had ever produced. The last two years the team has won two first place trophies in the regional tournament. This year, however, because of the J.V, tournament cancellation, this year's team can't receive the first place trophy. Their record shows that the J.V. girls are certainly worthy of that coveted first place. Sports 71 1. Where's the ball? 2. Jane puts a move on the defense. 3. Beth dribbles in for the score. 4. Kelly tries for an easy two. 5. Please make it, Ginny! 72 Sports 1. Terry tries to pass it through the middle, 2. Kelly and Terry harass 15. 3. Beth tips the ball to one of her teammates. 4.
