THE TALON 1977 2 i 3 WHAT IS OUR SCHOOL? It is many things, different things. Each student has his own definition of what John C. is; because each student brings to our school different talents, different needs, each takes from it something unique. It is a whole composed of basic parts: the campus itself, the students and the personnel, and the intangible spirit that infuses the whole with life . . . It is hours of shuffling pictures and selecting and discarding ... of writing copy that might sound just a little bit fresh and original ... of scheduling meetings between organiza- I tions and photographer. It is hours in the darkroom, developing and printing. It is selling ads and annuals. It is meeting deadlines after everything that could possibly go wrong, does. And above all, it is the pleasure and excitement of creating something per- manent, something that i will be a lasting reminder of good friends and good times. 34 activities activities 35 THE WARHAWK The WARHAWK is the Academy's newspaper. It is printed six times a year, with special focus on its final edition in the spring-a Senior edition dedicated to the graduates. Each publication features Sports, Class News, Letters to the Editor, Editorial Comments, Student and Teacher of the Month, Candids, and articles about current happenings around the school. 35 activities activities 37 Editor Asst. It has come about because of dedication and long hours of practice. MR. POLK, DIRECTOR, be- gan with a small nucleus of enthusiastic students in the fall of 1974. Since that time the band has grown in size and quality. Now the band numbers about 55 students. They rehearse every afternoon and several days a week during the summer vacation. The band performs at all home football games, at pep rallies, and at other Academy functions. They also perform at the invitation of other academies and at the request of local officials. Their uniforms, bought with the help of the Band Booster Club and the PTO, are an attractive asset to their performances. 42 activities activities 43 44 activities activities 45 Bonfire! The Homecoming Game on October 22 was the climax of the 1976 season. J. C. C. A. students began their celebration early with a Thursday night BONFIRE! On Friday the last hour of school was de- voted to the traditional PEP RALLY! As usual, various faculty members volun- teered for starring roles in the skit that always highlights these festivities. Cheerleaders did their thing; the appear- ance of the coaches leading the team through a warm-up session met with a roar of approval. And the Warhawkband added to the frenzy of the packed gymnasium. 46 activities activities 47 48 activities Pep Rally! activities 49 Senior Players' Sponsors bundled up against the cold! Candidate Queen Tammy Berry with PTO Vice-president Hinson Floyd 1975 Homecoming Queen LuAnn Phillips, escorted by Mr. Lohr, returns to crown her successor. activities 51 If there is anything that is more fun than going to a Junior-Senior Dance, it's planning and decorating for it! The juniors in the spring of '76 recreated the town of Waiter- boro with murals of Main Street and Jefferies. Hours were spent punching the green sprigs in the hedges, spangling the sky with stars, and building a fountain and pond complete with live goldfish! 52 activities activities 53 HAPPY DAYS The 1976 Junior- Senior was a nostalgic look at the 50's. The Junior class worked diligently to recreate common scenes of our lives in Walterboro. We danced on Main Street and down Jefferies to Dairy Land where we filled ourselves with delicacies and punch, but no BURGER - BASKETS! The evening began with a drop-in at the home of Mike Upchurch. We then proceeded to the gym where our evening passed all too quickly. But the fun did not end with the dance, as most of us continued the good times at Edisto Beach . . . 54 activities Music for the evening was provided by SUGAR CREEK from Charlotte, N.C. An added and unexpected feature was a floor- show starring Spencer and His Lady . . . activities 55 POWDER PUFF — 1976 An experienced Senior Class squad with a one-game winning streak under their belts, overpowered their Junior class sisters in their endeavor to remain un- defeated. Try as they might, the Juniors simply could not contain the well-coached team of senior players. Quarterback Kassie Haynes called the winning plays, brilliantly directed by Coaches Blocker, Upchurch and Wimberley. Junior Quarterback Tripp, and Coaches Ackerman, Lemacks, and Thomas led the Junior class effort. The Cheerleaders were GREAT! 56 activities activities 57 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR The PTO sponsored Christmas Bazaar produced the by-now expected abundance of delights to all who attended. The homemade goodies offered at the Grandmothers’ Booth, the excitement of Bingo, the Christmas ornaments, the Dessert Supper-all announced the Yule tide season was at hand. The Bazaar, along with the earlier Carnival, added many, many dollars to the PTO treasury. Bazaar Chairmen were Carolyn Connelly, Sandra Fennell, Sue Foster, Ruthie Grayson, and Carol Simmons. Gene Dyches and Harold Lewis were chairmen of the Halloween Carnival. 58 activities activities 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 66 67 68 ! i.
