But it is a lot of fun also. Cropping pictures, laying out pages, writing copy, meeting deadlines -- all this becomes a way of life for the harassed staff. This year we added our own darkroom and this has contributed greatly to the efficiency of production. Each yearbook staff tries to create an annual that is a true reflection of the school year. The 1976 TALON hopes this edition does just that. Activities 35 36 Activities JUNIOR-SENIOR SPRING 1975: The Junior Class put together a very suc- cessful Jr. -Sr. They decorated the gym in a heavenly fashion. The food was out of this world1'. Music was pro- vided by ELL The highlight of the evening was a twist contest . Mr. and Mrs, George Fennell twisted their way to the title. After the dance everyone headed to Edisto Beach for a rainy week-end! Many thanks to Mrs. Sandra Fennell and Mr. Jack Sanford, the Junior Class sponsors. Activities 3 7 Dr. Metcalf demonstrates the proper way to peel a human brain. Below, Dr. Metcalf points out various muscles in a dissected arm. 3 8 Acti vities FIELD TRIP ’75 Spring, 1975: Mrs, Fowler and the biology classes, accompanied by ''PH Spring, 1975: Mrs. Fowler and the biology classes, accompanied by Photographer Huffines, toured the Medical University in Charleston. On arrival, the group divided—half going with Mrs. Fowler, the others with Mr. Huffines. The two groups toured the dental department, where false teeth were being made; witnessed the implantation of electrodes in a cat's brain; were shown a film; were given a demons- tration of the electron microscope; and were lectured by Dr. Metcalf, who also took them through the gross (boy! it sure was!) anatomy department and the morgue. After examining a dissected cadaver, everyone was ready to eat and the bus headed for lunch at Burger King! Lee Wimberley takes a hit of helium gas. Activities 39 YEA, JUNIORS! RAH, SENIORS! (GIRLS, .40 Acti vities THAT IS!) The Feminist movement is taking over! The girls played football and the boys did the cheering. The Junior class chal- lenged their elder sisters to a game of flag football. Alas - youth prevailed. The beautiful bevy of cheerleaders gave their all - and what a lot that was! Score: 16-0. The Senior footballers had their own sponsores, and la lovely bunch of girls they were. Mr. Covington was referee , or that's what he said he was, anyway , . . JCCA’S FIRST ANNUAL POWDER PUFF GAME Activi ties 41 42 Activities Activities 43 CAROLINA SUNSHINE 44 Acti vities On a Saturday night in Nov- ember the Junior Class sponsored its second annual Miss John C . Calhoun Beauty Pageant. ANN CROSBY was crowned 1975-76 Queen, with Wendy Hiott and Robin Strickland chosen first and second runners-up. Judges were Mrs. Myra Eskew, Mrs. Pat Ray and Captain Rusty Hannah MISS JOHN C. CALHOUN ACADEMY Activities 45 46 Activities Finalists were chosen from 21 contestants. Others participating were Gaby Covington, Bonnie Phillips, Cheryl Carroll, Dell Newton, Anne Bowers, Shelly Foster, Teresa Newton, Ann Jervey, Robin Robinson, Denise Culpepper, Karen Strickland, Kinloch Howell, Frances Carmichael, Tammy Berry, Mary Wynn Todd, Beth Hiott, Helen Beach, and Lu Ann Phillips. Mr. Marion Sams, master of ceremonies for the pageant, introduced the contestants as they appeared on stage and also interviewed the eight semi-finalists. Intermittently entertainment, including singing, dancing, and organ selections of popular songs, was presented. Sue Yin Carroll and Neyle Jervey were co-chairmen for this Junior Class project. Activities 47 HOMECOMING! HOMECOMING! This is the climax of the Academy fall season. What an exciting time it is be- ginning with the big pep rally with its skits and faculty participation. This year the band was there to add an exhilarating cadence to the songs and yells. 48 Acti vities Skies outside were gray and damp, but surely it would change before gametime! Meanwhile, everyone wondered who would be crowned Homecoming Queen. HELEN BEACH, MALINE PADGETT, and LU ANN PHILLIPS were the 1975 candidates. Activities 49 The eleven senior football players presented their sponsors to the capacity crowd before the game with Sheldon began. While not ex- actly raining, there was a suspicious heavy dampness to the air. At the beginning of half-time, the three queen candidates and the 1974 Queenj Jenny Beach, were escorted on the field by Mr. Lohr, Headmaster; Dr. Joe Flowers, Chairman of the Board; Mr. JohnLe- macks, Booster Club President; and Mr. .Clyde Warren, President of the P. T.O. Jenny crowned her successor, LU ANN PHILLIPS. And then, the RAIN CAME! p. 50 pictured clockwise - Howell Beach with sponsor Helen Beach, Randy Carmichael with Beth Hiott, Tony Connelly with Wendy Hiott, and Clifton Culpepper with Karen Strickland, p. 51 - Brad Perry with Kinloch Howell, Phil Hurlbutt and Mary Barnes, Joey Carson and Lu Ann Phillips, and Greg Eley and Patti Heverly. 5 0 Acti vities Activities 51 The football game ended the way all Homecoming games should — JCCA won 20-0. After everyone had a chance to wring out their clothes, they ended the evening dancing in the gym to the music of MERG- ING TRAFFIC. pictured above - George Allen Jackson with Teresa Gooding, Donald Register and Jill Eustice, and Sam Thompson with Karen Ordel. 5 2 Acti vities Activities 53 This year our band, under the direction of Mr. Gerald Polk, is in its second year. The progress this group has made in its short life is.unbelievable. Their ap- pearance at school activities has contributed enormously to the spirit and fun of each occasion. While the big band is marching and performing, the baby band is waiting in the wings, ready to add their number to the more ex- perienced group when they be- come proficient enough. Mr. Polk is proud of his group at J. C. C, A. , and the Academy is equally proud of the band and its director! 54 Activities WARHAWK BAND ■ NO SMOKING Activities 5 5 56 Activities Activities 5 7 58 Activities Activities 5 9 HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL The PTO sponsored another successful Hal- jloween Carnival this year. They had a j variety of games, such as, ring-over- ' bottle, go-fishing, free-throw, football- |through-toilet seat! Everyone enjoyed the : traditional bobbing-for-apples. The jail- ihouse was the center of attention. The ! horrorhouse was filled with frightful faces I and bellowing screams. BINGO topped the I night with terrific prizes. 60 Activities A motorized bike was raffled during the ex- citement of the carnival. Plenty of popcorn, candy-apples, hot dogs, and candy were •gobbled down by the youngsters and grownups alike. Witches, goblins, and Batmans were running around with candy and gum in their hair! Everyone had a great time. Activi ties 61 The annual Christmas Bazaar is the longest-running project of the Academy P. T.O. , and has always been a source of much revenue for the extras that the Academy enjoys. It has now established itself as an outstanding feature of the low country Christmas season, and is eagerly anticipated and patronized by the public. 62 Acti vities CHRISTMAS BAZAAR This year the Bazaar added a new attraction — a FOOD RAFFLE! This was worth $500 and was a big hit. The other booths offered their usual attractive displays of food- stuffs, Christmas decorations, growing plants, hand-sewn articles, toys, wastebaskets, etc., etc. The dedicated hard work of many loyal supporters added an- other $4000 to the P.T.O. trea- sury.
