THE TALON 1973 John C. Calhoun Academy Walterboro, South Carolina Terron White - Editor Gail Godwin - Business Manager REFLECTIONS . . . the pages of The Talon should be re- flections of the days we have spent at JohnC. . . . they should revive in us memories of these days we have shared - good days, bad days . . . decorating for Junior-Senior kindergarten parties August football practices Mr. Smith's chemistry tests Senior rings substitute teachers Homecoming pep rally selling yearbook ads the February Snow Storm study hall working in the canteen vocabulary tests a winning touchdown and . . . graduation 2 f5w uftip - ' ; «•': Slip- SEPTEMBER School opened in mid-September, delayed be- cause the new high school building had not been com- pleted. John C. was different - almost twice as large. It was, despite all the usual protests, good to be back, to see old friends, and meet new ones. Immediately, school activities engulfed us: get- ting schedules straightened out; stumbling into French class when we were supposed to be In government; buying ribbons on Friday morning; football games on Friday nights; getting the junior class canteen set up . . . r f 5 MR. GILBERT BROWN President, The Booster Club The Booster Club had been hard at work during the summer, raising money for the Athletic program. We sold ads for The Talon, and the editorial staff began its own work. 7 10 School isn't all work! II OCTOBER The days began to get a little nip to them as fall approached. Classes were in full swing, and the earlier chaos developed into a smooth routine. We elected a Queqn to rule over us at Homecoming. We had another queen who ruled over the big Pep Rally, along with our lovely cheerleaders . . . The Retiring Queen 12 Queen Valerie takes a ride in her royal coach 13 14 15 17 At the Homecoming Dance in the gym, LION provided the music, and much of the entertainment was provided by our talented alumni! In November we elected a Presi- dent. We ordered doughnuts from the juniors, and we ordered senior rings. Football games were still the high mark of the week, but we were beginning to think about basketball as the season approached. We selected our beauties for The Talon . . . f 20 22 23 25 DECEMBER In December life is so full of a number of things - and school ought not to be one of them! 26 The Christmas Bazaar was staged in the gym and proved again how talented and dedicated our PTO is. The Country Store, The HawkTs Nest, The Grandmothers’ Booth, etc. provided us with tantalizing scents and sights . . . and lots of dollars. i 28 29 We were represented in the Walterboro Christmas Parade by our junior and senior cheerleaders, and by Cindy Thomas and Robin Odum, Homecoming Queen and Miss DAR , . „ 30 The Chorus practiced and practiced, and it all seemed worthwhile the night of their Christmas concert . . . The last days at school before the holidays began were frantic, filled with Santa Claus and Christmas trees and snowmen on bulletin boards - and drawing names in class. Everyone had the spirit. T(f 33 34 35 JANUARY The New Year was quite a let-down. Exams faced us . . . The PTO met to elect officers and to express a desire for closer communication with the Board of Directors. This meeting was followed by a joint meeting of Student Council, Faculty, and PTO representatives with the Board to formulate a more efficient communication among the groups. 36 Mr. William T. Howell was elected president for the PTO for the new year, and Mr. Roy Gibson was chosen to represent PTO on the Board of Directors, 39 40 FEBRUARY A Valentine gift to all - the Viet Nam War had dragged to an end, and our POW's started their journey home. 42 This was the month, the year, of the Incredible Snow- fall! Who could recognize our lowcountry under a nine- inch blanket of snow? School was disrupted for days, we remained isolated where we were until the thaw began. Many of us had opened our homes to stranded travelers when thousands of tourists found themselves without shelter and unable to move on. 44 45 MARCH — APRIL There was a sniff of spring in the airt and wasn't it nice to put away the same old tiresome winter wardrobe! The Athletic Banquet was held with Steve Satter- field of Clemson as speaker. Awards and letters were distributed to those students who had given so much time and effort to their sports. 46 47 48 49 51 MAY Junior-Senior! The exhausted juniors presented their graduating friends with a beautifully decorated dance - A Time for Us - a really good band, Men of Distinction, and good food. Who could ask for anything more? 52 53 The end of the year was almost upon us. Final exams loomed, not sometime soon, but NEXT WEEK. Mr. Jones gathered us together in assembly for Awards Day to identify and congratulate those who had excelled during the year and to exhort others to emulate them. After much delay, the yearbooks arrived dur- ing exam week. It all became a blur - exams, report cards, graduation night. Solemn seniors in caps and gowns - surely these were not our old friends. 54 56 DEDICA TION S7 MR.
