The new Gym was decorated with posters, flashing lights, and streamers to provide a gay, colorful, and contemporary scene. Mouse and the Boys provided the music. It was a smashing opening-night to mark the first such event held on our campus. 74 75 76 Academy Chorus This Is a fledgling group here at school Mrs. Amanda Fulton is chorus director, and under her guidance, members have been re- hearsing diligently. 77 Graduation 1971 Mr. John C. Guilds, Vice-Provost at the Univer- sity of South Carolina, delivered the Commencement Address to the twenty-three seniors of the Class of 71, at the Graduation Exercises held in the Gymnasium. Diplomas were presented by Mr. J. E. Hiott, Chair- man of the Board of Directors. 78 79 Crowded table at the Christmas Bazaar The Parent-Teachers Organization, this year under the direction of Mr. Roy Gibson, contributes greatly to the life of the Academy. Certain annual projects - the fall horseshow, the barbecue dinner, and the Christmas Bazaar - have provided the school with many of the extras we enjoy, and some of the ne- cessities too! Tommy Hayden scored the other two tdTs. D. Rhoden ran for the two points. An historic moment - FIRST GAME - FIRST VICTORY. JCC 12 - Roy Hudgens 20 In a closely fought contest, JCC suffered its first defeat. D. Rhoden and Bill Steadman scored the only JCC touchdowns. JCC 0 - Thomas Heyward 33 Due to eleven costly fumbles, the Warhawks suffered their second loss of the season to the eventual IS A A State Champion. JCC was behind 7-0 at half-time. JCC 14 - Country Day School 12 Against a tough Country Day team, the Warhawks bounced back to an exciting last second win. Richard Smith engineered a touchdown drive, climaxed by a 35 yard scor- ing strike to Mike Shiell. With 15 seconds left, R. Smith scored on a 1 yard plunge, tying the score at 12-12. With 8 seconds left, D. Rhoden ran the all important extra points. 104 JCC 0 - James Hammond 0 On a rainy James Hammond football field JCC Played an uninspired game, losing sev- eral opportunities to score. However this proved to be the turning point in our initial season. JCC 33 - Jefferson Davis 0 Playing against an undermanned Jefferson Davis team, Calhoun romped to a resounding victory. Greg Kight scored on a block punt, and scored again on a 9 yard run. B. Steadman scored two touchdowns on runs of 39 and 73 yards. Smith scored the last touchdown on a 25 yard' option play. Bill Zipperer kicked 3 of 5 extra points. The offensive line led by Bugs and Nat Smith, Gary Thompson and Terry Pierce, and Randy Peters opened gaping holes throughout the affair. JCC 6 - Robert E. Lee 7 The Warhawks lost a disappointing contest in Bishopville. JCC moved the ball from one end of the field to the other without being able to score. Greg Kight scored the only points of the night. 105 JCC 12 - Thomas Sumter 0 Playing in Sumter, the Warhawks again shut out the opponents. Bill Steadman scored on an 11 yard run and Richard Smith scored on a 19 yard quarterback sneak. David Rhoden saved two td's on an interception and a vital tackle. JCC 12 - Carlisle 0 On a soggy home field, the Warhawks gained their fourth victory of the season on Parents' Night, Bill Steadman scored the first touch- down on an 18 yard run and after a fumble recovery by Terry Pierce, Steadman scored again from 30 yards out. The defensive unit, led by Bernard Pinckney and Mike Shiell, held the opponents scoreless for the second shut out of the season. 106 JCC 28 - James Butler Bonham 0 JCC honored the homecoming guests by defeat- ing Bonham Academy. B. Steadman scored td’s of 28 yards and 17 yards. Greg Kight scored on a 2 yard plunge and a 27 yard run. Bill Zipperer was 4 for 4 kicking extra points. Again the defense, led by Ricky Sheffield, Eric Culpepper, Mike Benton, and Tommy Hayden, played a key role. JCC 54 - Patrick Henry 0 Putting it all together in the final game of this inaugural season, the Warhawks thoroughly thrashed the Patriots from Patrick Henry. Everyone got into the scoring act with David Rhoden scoring 2 touchdowns, Bill Steadman scoring 2, Greg Kight, Bernard Pinckney, Mike Shiell, and Mike Benton scoring one each. Bill Zipp kicked 6 extra points. Fumbles were recovered by Mark Hurlbutt and Craig Dopson. Both the offensive and defensive played excep- tionally well to end the season. 107 108 Homecoming — 7977 Laura Brooks, Queen Nancy Berry, Dianne Culpepper Our first football season was highlighted by the Homecoming Game of November 5 Nancy Berry, Laura Brooks, and Dianne Culpepper were nominated for Homecoming Queen candidates by the students of the high school. Our Queen, Nancy Berry, was crowned during half-time by Mr, Jones, Headmaster. Senior members of the football team and their sponsors were introuduced to the stadium crowd by Mr. Ryan White, announcer. A happy and triumphant group - students and their alumni guests - celebrated the victory at a Homecoming Dance in the Academy Gym after the game to the music of The Melody Makers. The John C, Calhoun basketball squad fin- ished a successful season with a 9-7 record, tying for second in the Region. A highlight of the season was the Christmas tournament held at the Calhoun Academy Gym, where the Warhawks were the runners-up for the Championship. Scorekeeper: Suzanne Cummings and Timekeepr: Bill Steadman. f 14 117 118 119 JV Basketball Team The Junior Warhawks had a highly successful season, finishing first in Region II AA with a perfect £r0 record, and an overall record of 12-3. The JV's lost only two regular season games and the lower State Championship game. The lower State Championship was held at the Wade Hampton Gym in Orangeburg. The JV's won their first two games against Bonham and James Hammond Academy, only to lose to a fired-up Wade Hampton team in the Championship game. Coach Cannarella is looking forward to having some of the Junior Varisty on his Varsity squad next year. With their winning attitude they should make a significant contribution to the Varsity team. 120 Jerry Smoak,.
