Elmer: Your contributions to John Bur- roughs School as a master math- ematics teacher, coach, advisor and administrator will long be remem- bered, but more important, We've gained so much from you as a per- sonal friend. We will all continue to profit from this relationship in the years to come. Sincerely, Tom Yager Mr. Hirth has always struck me as a man of great integrity and deep con- cern for excellence. The surprising element is his two rather contradic- tory ways of demonstrating his con- cerns: He can be easily triggered to action but he is most remarkable for persistence over the long run. De- pendable and precise, he is at heart a warm, loving, and lovable man. A competitor in the very best sense of the word- in tennis- in pok- er- and for John Bur- roughs School. A man who devotes all his ener- gies to those things for which he cares deeply. -Bill Thomas -Dora Tickner Mr. Hirth, you will soon be leaving the immediate day-to-day life of our school. Certainly the loss of your physical presence leaves the school with quite an administrative hole to fill, the extent of which we students are only vaguely aware. We are aware, however, of a more direct effect that your absence will have on us. Prospective students will no longer have the opportunity to be interviewed by you - to answer your direct, demanding, and sometimes intimidating questions and to work your traditional math problem - or to hear the unique pride with which you always represent our school. Ninth and tenth graders will no longer experience the fear of having you call their names at lunch, nor will they experience your caring when you call them just to see how they are doing. We will miss your faithful support at athletic contests falthough we hope you won't give them up completelyj qnd the exhibition of your own athletic championship in tennis games with other Burroughs faculty members fafter school, of coursej. We'll miss both the academic and the artistic challenges with which you've presented us through your roles as math teacher and arranger of Friday morning assemblies, and through the examples you've set yourself. We were told two years ago, when you were in the hospital, that you asked for your brief case from school almost immediately after you became so ill. We've enjoyed the Iitterbug King himself, sharing his talent with us. We're neglecting the most important part of this dedication, however, because what we really want to recognize is how we won't miss you. We feel that you have had such a profound influence, played such a crucial role in the shaping of our school into the institution that it is today, that although you won't be here from day to day, you will always be with us through the work you've done here. How can we begin to thank you?
