In Memory Of Alex Penger Alex served John Burroughs School faithfully from July, 1962 to December, 1975. His kind of service stands as a rich example all of us might envy and few could emulate. His determination to see that the school was properly cared for and in good running condition was recognized by studenis, faculty and friends. Alex's uniqueness was a combination of pride, hard work, and dedication. As a young man serving his native land of Germany during the war, he was true to him- self as an Army Master Sergeant where his loyalty sustained him through five years of bitter wa.rfare when he was wounded five times and captured by the Russians. When he and Lucy came to America in 1952, he swiftly became an American citizen, and steadfastly devoted himself to provide a home and good life for his wife and daughter, Barbara. I-le was generous in his devotion to his family. He attended to their needs and con- cerns with the same intense love which he had for the school. While cherishing at all times his inheritance, he became a'fan of America, St. Louis, and the Bombers of Burroughs. Alex loved a challenge to solve the unusual problems of which the school provided many He took great pride in whatever he did. He wanted it done right and, at the least possible cost. No bargain escaped Alex. He saved the school thousands of dollars over his fourteen years--not just through the cost of material, but by the efficient method he devised to solve the problem. I know he was a good provider for his family. The house he built on the school grounds is cozy and warm and attractive. It was HIS home on a thirty-acre estate about which he walked every night to see that all was well with Burroughs. Nothing escaped his attention. Alex set an example in the school for honesty, loyalty, and dedication. Our lives have been richer for having him with us. We have lost a friend. 19
