from the faculty ln Dedication to MISS DOROTHY GILBERT from the students ln her twenty-eight years as a member of the Language Department, Miss Gilbert has made the study of French and Spanish consistently interesting and exciting. Her classes not only cover the mechanics of language in depth, but also draw in a wide range of reading and thought. At her stimulation, prose, poetry, contemporary issues, and all aspects of French and Spanish culture are discussed freely and animatedly in class, contributing to both a full exchange of ideas and to the students' mastery of the spoken language. ln all readings and discussions, Miss Gilbert has always encouraged thorough and perceptive thought. She also strongly encourages, if not demands, accuracy and excellence in her classes. Outside of her activities at school as teacher, advisor, head of the Language Department, and member of the Faculty Executive Committee, Miss Gilbert also enjoys reading, music, travel, and the outdoors. Her warmth of personality and her dedication to stimulating discussion and thought mark Miss Gilbert as one of the distinctively fine people at Burroughs. Students and colleagues alike respect and ad- mire Dorothy Gilbert for her rare qualities as a teacher and as a person. All recognize her energet- ic leadership of the Language Department, her enthusiasm for learning, her support of high standards of achievement, her fairness, the inter- est and liveliness of her classes, and especially that infectious love for language and literature which has led so many students to a desire for excellence and to an appreciation of the best in another culture. Many remember with pleasure her rich alto leading a French folk-song in class or blending with other voices in a church choir. Many gratefully recall her sympathetic understanding and wise guidance as a teacher and adviser deeply concerned with the well-being of her students. lt must be satisfying to look back over years of accomplishment, of friendship, of service and of loyalty to John Burroughs School. But Miss Gilbert is not one to dwell on the past. With her, we look ahead to the full life she will have at her home in Dorset, Vermont. The affection, gratitude, and good wishes of the John Burroughs family go with her. 7
