In com- parison to the other teams which Mr. McConnell and Mr. Yerges have coached in the last two years. the size of the players was relatively smaller and the datc on which the soccer season was to start didn't enter the players' minds. There were few individ- ual stars on the team, it was an eleven man propo- sition every time the team took the field. Both teams played very well, but Codasco managed to score in spite of the strong Burroughs' defense. The Eagles came back to smash Priory 34-0. Excellent de- fensive play was shown by eighth grader Pitzman and Woods. and Flynn did some fine passing. In the second Country Day game. the Eagles were de- feated 21-6. The only bright spot came when Willis plunged for the score after a long Burroughs drive. ln their last game. the lfagles met Prin and defeated them 14-0. Tennis 54 Tennis Under the guidance of Mr. Elmer Hirth, the 'SAN tennis team completed its most successful season in years with a fine 10-1 record. Burroughs started the season with an encour- aging 5-0 victory over Ladue. This was followed, however, by a disheartening 3-2 loss to Codasco. The team bounced back, though, to smash Clayton, Prin, and Western by identical 5-0 scores. A pow- erful Webster team was then defeated 4-1. This set the stage for a 4--1 route of Codasco in the return match. St. Louis U. High and Western were the teanfs next victims, as we defeated them by 5-0 scores. The netmen wound up the season by clob- bering Prin 4-1, and Lutheran 5-0. Although the disgraceful early season loss to Codasco enabled the Daisies to tie the Bombers for the ABC league title, Burroughs showed its obvious superiority by taking the Country Day Invitational Tennis Tournament with ease. This is the second year in a row that we have won the tournament in which most of the top teams from around the city are entered. B Tennis The 1056-57 season was a very successful one for the nB', tennis team. in that they lost only one match. Unfortunately, that one loss was to Coun- try Day, and it enabled them to tie us for first place in the league. The season started off with a 5-0 win over La- due. The next match was with Codasco. We lost 3-2 after a three set match at first singles. The next league match, against Prin, we won 5-0 after some hard playing in the singles department. West- ern and Ladue fell to us by 5-0 scores, and we faced a return match with Country Day. In this match for league standings, first singles was again the deciding match. The outcome was different than before, however, and it was Codasco who went down 3-2, thus assuring us a tie for the league title. The next three matches against Western, Principia, and Lutheran, were all 5-0 victories for Burroughs. Sixty- five FIRST HOW: Hamilton. Cardncr, Walsfin, Creen. Kieffer. SECOND BOW: Kline. lf. Led by four-time winner jon Mars, Burroughs opened up their season successfully with a 74-44 victory over Brentwood. The next two meets with Country Day and Principia found the Bombers out- classed. They dropped a 38-80 decision to the Daisies and fell to a 31-87 defeat at the hands of Principia. By outscoring their hosts in all hut two events, Burroughs coasted to an easy 86-32 tri- umph over Western. In the B District Meet. Soon the boys and girls began to take an interest in each other as shown by the co-ed skating parties which were followed by keep away from the boys and by blossoming romances. Christmas was a busy season for us, for we had our first vacation from school after the tableau, which included as book boys and girls, Mary O'R., Susan R., Ann F., Terry C., Pete Pelton, Robin, Roni, and Duncan. At our Christmas class party, one of the big events of the year, the boys and girls exchanged some very strange presents, especially Frank and Kathy. After Christmas, slumber parties became the rage among the girls, whose idol was Marilyn Monroe. At the end of the seventh grade we all felt we were old hands at IBS, and we were ready to help the next seventh grade class find their way around Burroughs. In eighth grade, after losing Sam McCluney and Joan Henry, we were happy to have an addition to our class - Anne Ruhoff. This year the girls worried the teachers by form- ing cliques. Afterwards the girls stayed for a slumber party where no one slumbered until 5:00 a.m.!! This was also the night of various escapades including a spur-of-the-mo- ment I:00 a.m. swim in pajamas at Willyls pool. In school we worked hard in advisory, in classes, and in gym. Our work in advisory was climaxed by a battle between the boys and the girls about old clothes -- the girls wanted them for Kulli, the boys for Mr. Eisemanis Indians. We all joined en- thusiastically in sports with Bob playing on the CN team. This year we had our first encounter with foreign languages -- French with Miss Gil- bert, Latin with Mr. Horner and Miss Madsen. In the ninth grade we adopted Carol R. and John Sanders along with Charlie, Geoff and Mahlon. We were sorry to see Susan Womer, Christie Lich- liter, Susy Spence, Warren Weber and Pete Pelton leave us, though. Because we were the oldest class in the junior school and we all felt very grown up, the girls, es- pecially lfllen and Lucy, daringly wore lipstick, changed their hair, and began to wear more grown up clothes. The boys began to make names for themselves by playing on the B and i'C', teams. This was a big year because we could go to both the Football Dance and the Leap Year. Besides these two, we had quite a few class parties of our own. Remember the St. Patricks day party where the girls danced the Irish Gig and Judy Foote and Mary Poindexter rode across the stage on tricycles as Miss Fieselman and Miss Stafford touring lfu- rope? The boys, thinking they could provide bet- ter entertainment, presented 6'Music,' at the next class partyg this did not go over too well, though. This was also the year that Henry and his drums made their formal debut. With the close of school, Lucy and Willy gave their swimming party. which will be long remembered by many. VVe were very proud to have elected to school offices three of our class mates. Tommy became the new bailiff, and Kathy Calkins, and Judy Foote became cheerleaders. This year also saw the beginnings of the girls' hen parties, a series of crushes on the 'gNeat senior boys, and Halloween parties. During the various vacations we saw the begin- nings of our classes, mass migrations to Florida, Aspen, and Van Buren. In the tenth grade we gained Nick Samaras. At Christmas M.E.0'R. gave the first of the caroling parties, at which a few off key notes were detected. In January Bert gave a class party at which many of the men in the upper classes futilely appeared at the door. This was followed by Ellen's birthday party, in which Oberbeck was a key at- traction. Tom had his Abe Lincoln party where Woods presented him with cherry bombs wrapped in t.p. In the spring, Judy L. gave a party for all the girls at her farm where they had fun exploring, climbing trees and practicing cheerleading. Char- leyis Aunt was presented with Wundy as the lead along with Donna, Anne R., Betsy, Carol, Duncan, John L. Nick, Tommy, and T. C. This play turned out to be a tremendous production, though Bert couldn't smoke the cigar. In April, Donna had her treasure hunt in Forest Park. Many of our boys fought fiercely to win the C foot- ball championship. As we started the eleventh grade, we had two major goals in mindg to raise MORE money for the prom, and to procure our driveris licenses. How many times did Beam try? Fortunately, we collected enough money from the sales at the football games, for our bakesale returns were rather meager. In final counting, we had the amazing sum of 35550. Mary and Lucy designed the prom - New Or- leans -and we all pitched in to help construct the brick walls. That rock and roll music certainly helped the atmosphere. When the prom was finally finished -- with red, green, and yellow bricks, we could hardly believe it, but we were a very proud class, because it was simply beautiful. We arrived at the prom that night dressed to perfection and ready for a good time. Afterwards, we went to ,Ianie's for breakfast and then attempted to stay up all night. We almost succeeded, as Robin got his police car mired in a ditch and most of us couldn't leave until four. The next morning we arrived in body but not in mind, some of the boys considered it more fun to rip the decorations down than to pick them up, though many of the girls saved a scrap for a SCRAP book. In the spring we cam- paigned for offices, though John L. was not overly enthusiastic. Terry won the speakership and Susan R. was elected secretary. Tom was Chief Justice, with Kath and Keef as judges. Can you imagine, a sophomore was the President of the Council. Julie, Charlie, and Frank were elected to council. As the year drew to a close, the gangs were formed. For the girls, a sect known as the Lunas was drawn up with Beatty Biggs as the leader. They specialized in slumber parties with 6 o'clock swims at Gilpy's. More dangerous were the Black Lashes headed by Judy Hunkins, who for the most part futilely combatted the RED FANGS, who were run by Bill Bascom and Charlie E. Their main claim to fame was the filling of J. A.'s car with hay. Twelfth grade - This is the year we were su- preme sophisticated seniors. We started the year anxious to help our little brothers and sisters, though they seemed to manage quite well without us. Before school began, we had an outdoor party at Trish's, where the Chrysler product was demon- strated to Mr. R. Dube. In the fall, the girls Killed Villa for the first time in fifteen years, but the boys demonstrated their skill by beating the girls 3-2. This affair was followed by a grand party at Anne R's house.
