Time went by quickly and soon we found ourselves in the eighth grade. There we were anxious to be on top, but time seemed to move so slowly. We seemed to be continuously busy learning facts, cold facts. The middle years are always the most trying. Finally we made it - ninth grade at last. It has been a most exciting year planning our graduation and getting prepared for high school. Soon we will be in another new school with different surroundings. We start all over again, but this time we won't be frightened. Instead we will know how to act and get along because of the sociable environment of junior high. We will have better study skills and understanding because of the teachers who helped us. We will know how to make decisions and how to express ourselves because of our experience in student government. This is all because of our school years at John Burroughs Junior High. In closing, we, the student body officers, would like to thank all those who elected us to office and all those who helped us plan our school activities. Holly Morrison Student Body President, Fall Fifty years will bring us to the year 2024. What will our school be like? The teaching methods will probably be different. There might be an individual layout for each class. In history, the class could be arranged to illustrate the different forms of govemment so that they can be compared rather than stud- ied through books and lectures. In English the class might devise a new language and compare its com- ponents with English. There will be more technological aids for learning. Possibly there will be a more relaxed relationship between students and teachers. They may even call each other by their first names and visit to socialize. They may try to make the classroom more comfortable by installing couches, lounge chairs and desks instead of the uninviting desk-chair combinations. Basically the students in fifty years will be like the students of today. Most of them will wantmore privileges: an open campus where the students could leave whenever they deem it necessary, student participation in the instruction of classes, and a student choice of teachers. Some students will be bored with teachers, or feel that they are criticized too much. Others won't be satisfied with school. There will be those students who won't just settle for passing their classes, who are at school to leam something and will look twice at themselves before saying that school is boring. In fifty years aside from materialistic changes, the search for the answer to the mystery of life will go on. The longing for knowledge will continue to inspire young people. Hopefully in fifty years we will have reached most of the goals we are striving for now: togetherness, a clean environment and most of all a chance for everyone to achieve regardless of the color of his hair, the shape of his ears or the manner in which he worships God. So in 2024 many of the experiences will be different, but some things will be the same as in 1974. The big halls, the hundreds of students and the big bullies calling us scrubs, All of us were frightened and bewildered. As the days went by, we met new people, acquired new interests, learned newer and greater things, and most important of all collected more and more memories of junior high. These memories, especially those of our senior year, will never be forgotten. As a senior we have picked our class colors and theme. The colors which we proudly wear are light and dark blue. The theme which represents our fifty years development is a quotation by Newman, Growth is the Only Evidence of Life. Our class, The Class of 74 has the great privilege of being the 50th year graduating class. John Burroughs Junior HighSchool has provided memories for thousands of young people, Our school has lasted for fifty years and with the help and care of the people, it will last for fifty years more. You've come a long way J, B, Dorothy Cheung Fall Historian Junior high school years at John Burroughs have made us realize that no man is an island. In order to make our school one body, we have to work together. Today, we find that we have many problems, Because of the earthquake, the girls' P,E. building and our cafeteria had to be demol- ished, We do not have other facilities to function as well as we would like, yet we manage. We, however, have a more difficult problem, which we have to solve - segregation on our campus, Together we came up with a great idea for the spring semester - a Come Learn - Come Teach after school dance. We aim to get all of the students together. To unite the ninth grade, we are planning a ninth grade color day, a ninth grade court, and lawn lunches. In order to get closer to our parents, we have our Father-Daughter Night, Father- Son Night, and Mother-D aughter Tea. Another cooperative venture is this Burr, As ninth grade elected representatives, we are proud to be members of the Golden Jubilee class. We extend our congratulations to our school with a pledge to carry on and stress the importance of Unity and Togetherness. We wish to thank the faculty for the education and training which has been responsive to our needs. Truly we are leaving John Burroughs with heavy hearts, but we'll always cherish the memories we had here to inspire us to press forward . . . I wonder what the one hundredth year historian will say! Strangely enough, when I got in sixth grade, I found myself listening to my teacher saying that he could understand why the little first graders were so playful, but couldn't understand why big, responsible kids like us made so much trouble. When 1 arrived in junior high, all our teachers told us that we were really mature. This made me feel like a big girl. For a while, I lived on a cloud, believing that I couldn't get any wiser than I was. Now I am a senior, part of the graduating class of '74, Continuing on the same vein, not one of the teachers has failed to tell us of our superiority over the 7th and Sth graders, We are now regarded as the big shots of the school. I-Iow can I believe that I am really mature when I have high school and college ahead of me? How many times will I listen to the familiar clause, Now that you're in . . . How can l believe that I've grown up and I'm mature enough to make wise decisions? I don't think that I'll ever be old enough or wise enough. I realize that as the days go by, I constantly discover something new. Experience and learning help me to grow a little more each day, because growth is the only evidence of life. Wonhee No Growing Up Feelings As I grow older and grow up, I think about what I did in the past. I was a very foolish little girl. I did many foolish things, I cried just because my mother wouldn't take me shopping with her, I was jealous because my grandmother bought my little cousin a doll. I fell in love with a chubby little boy who had a 352, 000 mouth. Although he was all tummy and had two left feet, I didn't mind because it was my first love. When I did these things I thought I had grown up feelings. The thing that puzzles me about growing up is why I feel and think differently asl grow older? Could it be the evidence of growing up? I no longer believe I was grown up before, l now know that I was still a little girl. I wonder what I will think a few years from now. Growing Up Wondering Wondering is one of the main events of life. You go from nursery school to the sixth grade wondering if your best friend really is your best friend, From the seventh to the ninth grade you won- der why you're having problems with your par- ents, teachers, friends, and yourself. You also wonder if you are really loved by them Qthey say they doj. Through high school you wonder about the young ladies and young meng will they be for or against you. From college 'til your late years, you wonder if the world will accept you as everyone else has through your years of youth. Monique Dunlap Nina Kim Growing Up Growing up is very important, Knowing things that are to come, Knowing when things are fun And looking at what's happening Growing up is a necessary thing. Knowing what is happening, And what your life will bring. Growing up is important in life. Knowing when you are right and wrong, And giving as you keep receiving. When it comes out it is so shiny and bright That when you look it's such a beautiful sight. And in the morning it goes down slowly But in the night it's very glowing. Felicia Garcia Carmen You know, there is so much beauty in a person Who understands the mind. Friend, this is what I say to you: Don't let that grown tree full of seeds and leaves stop to rest. Give it fuel if it needs it. Give it light, for you know where to find it. But, friend, never let it decayl Sad to say, it would be the end of my friend, Carmen, if . . . Otherwise! Patricia Genie Night When I look out my window On a stormy winter night, I see the soft snowflakes falling to the ground And I feel the wind come into my room And I see the dark sky lit up by stars And in the distance I see the frozen lake Which from here looks like a sparkling diamond Made lovely by the moon. And then I close my window and go and dream. Rosalie Finer A Poem Words upon wordsg Thoughts . . . Sometimes of happiness, Other times woe. Life , , . Made up of thoughts And moments. But does it matter? Where are MY thoughts? When do I live? When do I think? 1'm never quite sure. Chris McCarthy W inter The salmon go upstream to spawn. The leaves on trees are almost gone. A little seed, buried in the dark ground, yearned to see the outside world. He wanted to hurry up and grow so he might be above the ground to winless the creation about him and breathe the fresh air. Time passed, and he found himself in the outside world. I-le looked around curiously and discovered a big building standing in the midst of a bare plain. He saw many children running around, laugh- ing. By the big, bold letters, John Burroughs Junior High School, he knew that this was a place where children came to learn and grow. Years passed, and he became a sturdy tree. He saw the school developing into one of the best in the city, and he was proud that his roots were buried in the grounds of a school with so much prestige. He was happy as he saw little children changing into mature young men 45 Alafml, U s .g1'5:q,. O-Q Q- gf D Q1 v 'Mfg D 'Q 71901 e'.lj,C1f12'e ' gig. .651-aiqii M 56275: 5 NA Qggfbfhf, fain! I'm on my way to a distant land Where the skies are blue and the quiet is free. I want to yell with happiness And I want to kiss the beauty of it all. On the wayl meet a man, He looks so lonelyg he looks so helpless. Please, dear sir, let me help you, For I'm on my way to a world called Paradise Where the skies are blue and the quiet is free, I have no money for there, there is no need for it. There you will be happy, look and feel younger, And again you will have the yearning for love, There the skies are blue and the quiet is free. Oh, young man, listen to me, For there is no land such as this, For I am older, yet wiser. There is, dear sir, for I have paid for a map of this land Where the skies are blue and the quiet is free, Then the time came when we saw the vision of Paradise. The birds were spreading melody through- out the land, The crabs were crawling down under the crystal sand, And then a squirrel came prancing as happy as could be, And when I bent down to pet it All there was was a smooth rock in its place And everything disappeared, Even the birds singing, And the map was only scribbling, Joel Geffen Life can be so strange You have to seek the meaning So live and let live. Julie Frenzel The World Clear as can be, the world I see, Till my eyes grow dim. But I can't see what lies over the riml I see the people go towards the town As I watch the city go down, down out of sight and far away. I shall take the rim and sail some day, lt may be good or it may be fair. And I wouldn't come back, I may stay there. But one thing is sure - be it gay or grim, Some day, some day I must cross that rim, Rhonda Price Poem The shooting has stopped, There is an echo of silence. Some men have lived, Some have died, And what do we get from it? Nothing but more violence. Why don't we stop this? No one seems to know. To some it brings joy To some it brings woe. Blood thirst men will always fight. To them peace is wrong and Killing is right. We cry out for help. But there is no answer. It seems like war Is deadlier than cancer. Everyone should come to his Senses and be willing To agree that life is more Important than killing. Joseph Sion QP! X lg git lQlIOlR . 'pffx 'lf-li AIWVAN1 .1217 Ulil fl IESTRA 7, t -,... yyh I . I start life over again, A baby taking its first breath, The sun shines, An old man smilesg I smile back I know he cares. What a beautiful day! Jodie Alkin Growing Up Growing up isn't easy, as you all know, It seems we're all looking for a better place to go. We see the sun shining, but we don't smile, We're waiting for the rainbow, that'll take a while. It isn't easy, to fall in love, You start searching for the stars above. We get put down, we get hurt, Some even treat us, as if we were dirt. I pray for the future, let us be free, We've got our lives to live, just let us be, We'll find our rainbow, it will be so bright, And then we'll live our lives, we'll live it right, Linda Lemer Living Life is evidence of living, Kindness is the thought of giving, Evil is not to be thought in mindg Try to only think of what's kind, When it's that sad time for dying, It's something everyone must do. All your friends are sad and crying, I know one day I'll die too. It seems the world can't cope. The end is near. Everything is going down a slope. We all fear. Everything is distant, Running blindly in an endless world Empty as the skies. Let your mind be you. Don't fear your feelings, Be free, Shondra Fitzpatrick I watch the sunset. I think it is beautiful With all those colors, I love the forest With all those big redwood trees. And there is no smog. Byron Foster Dead Giant I am a man who died, I am a nobody, that's why no one cried, Whenever I went to town, People would always put me down I can see my true self: A nobody, a dwarf, an elf. Why, I don't know, But I'm glad I'm dead, so I won't feel low .g So I met defeatg that I could not hide, So I took the only way out, by suicide, But I told the truth, I've never lied, That I was dead, before I died, Darryl Shen Life Life started from dirt, From the ground, but it begins With your first breath of air, You start out as a baby and go through childhood, then Adolescence and finally Adulthood, Life is time, You can either spend it or waste it. Life is the sun yelling out loud with brightness, the night turning lights out low. Changes and stages we will all meet in our lifetimes, But from what I've already witnessed, Life won't end with dirt. Claudia Maxwell One Afternoon It will be the gladdest thing if I just sit under the sun. I will touch a hundred flowers and just pick one. I will look at the trees and clouds with quiet eyes, I'll watch the wind as it blows down on' grass as the sun makes it rise, And when the sun's light begins to come up high, high up from the town, People be saying, Look at that bad sky, Love, There is no more, Love, oh, love, we need you now. Please give it to all. Peace, There is so little Freedom. It is so very rare, And we need them so. Hubert Miller The lillypad floats, The frog watches the fist swim. Their laughter is soft. The water is blue, The gul1's reflection is clear And my life is good. Chris McCarthy Growing Up, Growing Older, Changes: A Message to Young Folks At this moment I am in a state of confusion and deep concentration l like this because this is when l can check out my mind and situation, I have to get my thoughts together. I must do something to get my mind off silly things, whatever. These certain things are every- ' day things, Like prejudice, jealousy, and doubts. I guess that's what life is all about, You have to take the bitter with the sweet. And there are challenges I rea- lize I must meet. This is the change where I take on more responsibility I must try to fill my part in society, There are problems l should try to understand Without adults giving a helping hand. We'll have our bag And they'll have their bag We don't have to live up to their expectation. This is an era of communication. Instead of having a debate We should sit down and try to relate. We must try to understand one another And accept each other as a brother. UnityI That's what we'1l cry Or will we have to say good-bye ?
