WE BUILD A BETTER BURROUGHS
SCHOLARSHIP: We're in school to learn, and it's up to us to take advantage of the opportunity for an education.
By cooperating with others, we can create a better classroom situation. Grades aren't everything, although they do
show what we know about the subject. A student may feel that a "C" is an average grade and that he shouldn't try
for higher goals. By trying to gain more knowledge rather than to receive better grades we can achieve these higher
goals. Listening in class and participating in discussions are keys to learning. By attempting to gain knowledge we can
build a better Burroughs.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT: Students are the most important factor in student government. Although we elect home-
room presidents to represent us and school officers to lead us, they cannot work unless we, the student body, assist.
Our ideas are the basis of school government. Without our ideas and suggestions this school government could not
exist. lt is our duty to elect officers capable of leading us and of promoting a friendly feeling throughout the school.
Although these people represent us in the leadership classes, we, too, can participate in the government of our school.
Senior Council Lab was organized to give us, the students, a chance to voice our opinions on the problems of our school.
Thus, student government also helps to build a better, more democratic Burroughs.
SAFETY: The Space Legion was organized for a purpose: to keep John Burroughs safe and free from accidents. This
group has made school safety rules and it is up to us to fallow them. They are for our own good and we should try to
abide by them, There are four organizations, Space Patrol, Solar Patrol, Space Cadets, and Solarons, to enforce these
rules. Besides enforcing the rules, these organizations attempt to promote a healthful attitude toward safety through-
out the school. We, by realizing the importance of safety in our lives, can help to build a better, safer Burroughs.
ORGANIZATION: There are many types of school organizations and we should choose ones suited to our interests.
They are available for our benefit and it is up to us to make them successful. Participation is essential in all organi-
gations. We should try to attend meetings as often as possible and to make ourselves part of the group by adding our
ideas and suggestions. The object of the organizations is to provide an interesting and profitable use of our leisure
time. To create an atmosphere of good human relations, it is necessary for every member of each group to cooperate.
ln this way organizations help to build a better Burroughs.
FRIENDLINESS AND COURTESY: These qualities are and should be qualities of John Burroughs. We should realize
that friendliness is very important in our lives. Our friendliness can open the door to a new friendship. The Hospitality
Club was organized to promote more friendliness throughout the school and to welcome new students. Although cliques
are ever present, we have realized that they create a serious problem and have tried to correct it, Courtesy also is very
important to us. ln the surrounding community, the courtesy of J.B. students reflects on our school. A few students can
make an unfavorable reputation for the entire school. On busses and in public places we can do our best to make o
favorable impression. Friendliness and courtesy are the two very important factors in our school spiri.t. By creating a
friendly and courteous attitude toward others, we can build o better Burroughs.
SPORTSMANSHIP AND HONESTY: On the athletic field and in the classroom, sportsmanship is important. We should
realize that we are responsible for our grades, We should learn to accept them and not blame the teacher. On the
athletic field, we should learn to respect the referee's decision. Honesty also is very important in our lives. A student
who is honest is respected by his fellow students. When we receive a high mark dishonestly, we are not only cheating
others by raising the class average, but we are cheating ourselves. Honesty and sportsmanship throughout the school
can provide an opportunity to learn, for everyone. Thus, sportsmanship and honesty can build a better Burroughs.
SERVICE: It is very imaptrant for us to serve our school, For the more we put in, the more we get out of it. There are
many service groups that we can join. These groups assist in helping the school day run smoothly. They are actually
the unsung heroes of our school. We can help in our own way, by attempting to obey rules and to make life more
pleasant for those around us. We also can serve our school by cooperating with others to provide better learning con-
ditions in our classrooms. By serving our school, also, we can build a better Burroughs.
