THE CLASS 0F SUMMER 1954 IN REVIEW B7 ln the winter of 1951, John Burroughs little realized that the 362 new B7's would increase ta 447 and become one of the largest classes ever to be graduated from the school. First we met Mr. Lloyd, Miss Baller, and Mrs, Toaker -our grade counselor. After preliminary meetings between these folks, our parents, and us, we became normal, happy, J.B.-ites. One of our first real tasks as members of the J.B. community was to elect one boy and one girl from the social studies classes to serve on the Council of Representatives. After the speeches were given, Tanya Zelesky ond Richard Silvera were chosen by the Board of Control ta be B7 Representatives. A7 We began our second semester at John Burroughs by electing Barbara Newman and Tommy Seliba our "Grade Reps." During this semester, the terrific "Burr Frolics of '52" were held and by this time members of our class were familiar with the wonderful assemblies at J.B. Buying defense stamps became a regular part of our school activities as we did our part in aiding our country. Mrs. Tooker left us far the Attendance Office this semester and we were sorry to see her go. However, we soon made o new and loyal friend in Mr. Thomas who took her place. B8 With much enthusiasm we watched for the installation of the little boxes known as the "PA, System" and heard what was to become a familiar voice, that of Mr. Lloyd, who began a new phase of his career-giving announcements. Brenda Browdy and Bill Neal were elected "Grade Reps" and worked with the Board of Control which was carefully Plunnlng o new constitution that would change the government of our school. Alan Harris began a career in school service by presiding over assemblies as Chairman of Junior Assembly. A8 As seniors lar the first time, we were expected to accept new responsibilities along with our new "senior privileges." During this semester the new constitution, after being voted on by every J.B.-ite, was put into eflect. lt gave more students a chance to participate in xii. :35'R'3f:gTt I g M I .' 'l Iii . , 1. N, Student Government. Near the end of this semester, news reached us that Mr. Kaplan, Boys' Vice-Principal, was going to Audubon Junior High School. His duties were taken over by Mr, Hamerman. B9 One of the most drastic changes in our three years at J.B. came when we began to receive piles of homework in such subiects as Spanish, Latin, Algebra, English, and good old Social Studies. Many fine members of our class ran for offices which they would hold in their final semester at J.B. Oh yes- we were mighty proud when the "B's" defeated the "A's" in the annual Dustbowl game. A9 Where have the years gone? Here we are, A9's, the leaders of our school. We had witnessed and helped with two types of school government, the beginning of the P.A. system, many thrilling Dustbawl games, Ploydoys, Club Burr programs, many memorable instal- lations, J.B.'s fine assemblies, Burr Frolics, and other exciting events. Alon Harris started out our A9 semester as Student Body President, and the A9's chose Mike Katzev to preside over their class meetings and Council. ln planning our activities there was always the problem af our size-our large enrollment. For this reason, Q lang standing tradition was broken as the A9 class did not attend their own graduation. Instead, they were seated in the bays' gym until it was time far them to march across the stage to receive their diplomas. During the semester, guidance assemblies were held which helped U5 choose our B lO programs. Interest inventories were taken proved to be a lat of fun. The A9 Breakfast, the Camera Days, the day we got our colors, and the afternoon dance all added up to make this last semester a rich one. Class colors were powder blue and white. The carefully worked out theme for graduation was "Daring to be Different." Our final "Evening in Paris" was one of the most delightful events, We of the class of Summer l954 wish to thank you -Mr, Thomas, our patient grade counselor- Mr, Lloyd, Miss Baller, and Mr. Hamerman, administrators who worked always to make our school experience the best-and all the teachers who worked generously to prepare us throughout our three years far our graduation day. Our thanks can best be read on our faces as we walk down the aisles to the solemn music of "Pump and Circumstoncef' You have given us opportunities to learn and to grow, to become happy and succesful young adults. We of the A9 Class give you our sincere thanks. pl 51 i F' X as X Arllmkfastl . it I SM 7 'N I l'ldvalx1l,lQ5Q Q 1K1l,nrl,1lle' ll fsfirs ml A lsuur. "Oh, is that your FOOT?" "Hey, get your elbow out of my back!" This is not a report of life in a saradine can, nor is it Grand Central Station, though you may think so, It is the result of J.B.'s "Bursting at' the seams." With over l8OO adolescents running around loose, you got the idea that you ore in Bullocks' Wilshire ot sale time or maybe at Lockheed Aircraft at the 5:00 p.m. buzzer. With the large enrollment this year, there has been a traffic problem in our crowded halls. There have also been problems with thc crowded cafeteria, crowded classrooms, and a bulging lunch yard. Of COursC, the buildings have weathered worse storms, and although you see cracks in the walls and hear creaks, there has been no danger except from falling books. But with all the cliscomforts and tight squeezing, J.B.-ites have learned more about cooperation and thoughtfulness. Rushing in the halls, gossip- ing around lockers, and showing aft "for the new girl friend" have been "out." We have had to work together to make life more comfortable. J.B. stretches lor rather BULGESl across a full city block, but try to get through the halls before school, and you may get the idea that every student in the city is milling around - if you last long enough to get on idea. But with all the problems and the crowding, life has been more interesting. For this reason, the Burr Staff has chosen to make the BURR theme "Bursting at the Seams." - E, R. 4 The BURR STAFF, under the sponsorship of Miss Eisner and Mr. Cline, assists with the planning and publishing of the J.B. Burr. Members of the staff are students tram the Art Service Class and the A9 Journalism Class. law I: Palsy Faddan, Elaine Spiro, Suxi Ruhinhald, Mural Raunbul.
