Possibly I shall not be here to see it, but .
many of the students of the John Burroughs
Junior High School will see this country
facing toward the East. California will be
the front door leading into a new world.
The future of Western America lies in
the Pacificg it is my firm opin'on that, in
another generation, our relations with Ori-
ental countries will be vastly more important
than the present relations of Arrericn with
A new world is to be built in the countries
bordering upon the Pacific. lt is for the
boys and girls now growing up to see to it
that it is the right kind ofa world,
lf this world begins to grow right now
in the hearts of the young people of the
Pacific Coast, this new civilization of the
Pacific waters can be the finest ever known.
The firm resolve that we all should make
is to try to understand and appreciate our
friends of Japanese and Chinese birth and
race. The John Burroughs Junior High
School is taking an important step in that
direction with the publication of this
Let us make up our minds to go on with this work until there is not a shred of
hatred or malice or jealousy left in the Pacific Area. Let us make up our minds to
build a new world known for its unselfishness and warm friendships,
lt is a fine thing that the students of this school have made arrangements to write
letters to students in Japan and China. They are doing a real service to this country
and to the cause of humanity.
There can be no hatreds or wars where there are complete understandings.
A French philosopher said: "To know all is to forgive all."
