'I6 After waiting three long years, it finally happened. We have become seniors. We have lived through it all. Now it's on to a hopefully successful future. JUNIGFKS ................ 48 With only one more year left of high school, the lVliddlemen eagerly awaited their most celebrated year as seniors. SOPHOIVIORES .......... 66 Starting at the bottom, sophomores got in the flow of things - even after enduring their share of abuse from juniors and seniors. ACADEMICS ............. 82 Being bombarded with homework and tests were only a few problems that a typical Burroughs student had to contend with. infidc f-I K 6 L f-1 SPORTS ................ 98 There was more to a Burroughs student's life than academics. Instead of rushing home at 3:05, some students participated in interscholastic athle- tics. SPIRIT ................. 142 Cheerleaders and band members did an excellent job this year, leading the crowd and rooting our teams on to victory. ACTIVITIES ............. 160 To escape the drudgery of academics, many students participated in extracurricular activities such as CSF, clubs, ASB, Akela, Smoke Signal, drama, band, and dance. REIVIINISCENCES ....... 193 The year has finally come to an end. We can now look back at the past- whether good or bad - and move ahead into the future. 3 THE IGI-lr he exhilaratlon of being a Bur- roughs student was felt by all the many guys and dolls on campus this year. Whether it was pumping iron inthe weight room, playing chal- lenge vvater polo at lunch, going to the beach on weekends, or cheering for 'football on Friday nights, indians 'found plenty of 'tcasual pursuits to occupy their spare time. For many, being a student at J.B.H.S. meant be- longing: pep groups, marching band, athletic teams, performing arts, a vvide variety of clubs, special classes. lt also meant being involved. PTA membership drives, balfse sales, oar vvashes, ffted Cross Blood Drives vvere but a 'fevv of the myriad of oppor- tunities available. We were never at a loss to have fun, whether it was olowning around vvith Coach Grimes, 'foatching some at the beach, orjust being vvith friends. I! at 1 s SENIOBS After two long years, it finally happened, you were there - you were seniors. There was nothing like knowing that only one yearg two semestersg four quarters remained. The year beckoned feelings of great expectancy, excitement and, even, a measure of regret, - Senior Prom, Coronation, Homecom- ing, that last Varsity game, farewell parties. - SAT's, AP's, GPA's, entrance applica- tions, job applications, college applications: Where? When? How much? Was I accepted? Did it matter? Decisions, decisions, decisions. But agonizing over piles of paper, endless figures, No. 2 pencils and bubble columns didn't slow the class of '84 down. And they didn't let the scourge of Senioritis keep them from making the most of their last blast , either. Senior involvement was as strong as ever and there was still time to experience the pleasures of relaxing and socializing with friends, cheering at rallies, and kissing between classes. ln spite of the pressures and because of the fun, 1984 at Burroughs was worth it. For the class of '84, an end . . . and a begin- ning. l fslmi' 409 A iff? 4 ,gffipfjy fi E, iii ii il? jg? 1 u fi 1 41 ,IWW aff, giifeglfiifl 35 -if 5: 51 , J :J If 1. Student interest in learning computer language, and gaining hands on experience, was high on their list of priorities. Science is one of the few academic courses which does not need to follow sequence. Students could select Biology 1-2, Chemistry 1-2, or Physics 1-2 in any year. With SB813 requirements in Science and Math increased, it has become evident this year that soon another course will be added to expand the department, affording students the opportunity to fulfill the new state requirements. An example of our Science departments outstanding program this year was the capturing of the Bausch 8t Lomb Award for Math and Science by senior Rizal Lopez. l X Qmellano -4 gffxt anne eat Denise D stev 9 Uitu 87 BUSINESS ED. Booming le- Hammering For Help! he Business Education department has been fortunate to get equipment each year from the Federal Vocational Education Act CVEAJ Funds. As a result of the funding, we now have two rooms with electric typewriters, and this year marked our second with a computer laboratory available for the use of the Computer Sciences and Advanced Accounting classes. ln the Office Procedures Laboratory we also have electronic memory typewriters, correcting typewriters, a Compugraphic computer typesetter, calculators, transcribing machines, and other modern office equipment, which have ushered the Business Dept. into the computer age. Best of all, we had a good group of interested business students and teachers. l ll the Industrial Arts classes suffered cut backs this year. Last year, five woodshop classes were offered -this year, only four. Skill levels were combined, making teaching quite difficult at times. Industrial Arts classes r were not offered in the afternoon and were this put in the position of competing with academic required courses. As a result, enrollment suffered, students were denied, and the program was hurt. The Industrial Arts Dept. sees it role here at Burroughs as one of providing an opportunity to explore potential in vocational areas. Let us look to the future, hoping that this valuable program will continue forward in spite of difficult times. l DQYXG er Uffw anx K gr8Q Maureen .iafi ROUGH D CYXYXUQGY 88 Sheila Feu Prichard kathleen fir' - F r elif eld 6300 Ganxl Bemafd L' Garrison d Goodlavl Nlafw Daxll rd Gflmes PARENTING Not For Females Only he Parenting class provided students, both male and female, with the practical advantages of active vs. passive parental responsibility. In today's changing world of single or divorced parents, working mothers, house husbands , and dual roles, it was not surprising to see male interest in this subject area peak. ln the Parenting class, students developed a practical understandin of what it is like to be married and raise Q children. The course of study included planned activities to compliment the various theories studied. In this way, students were exposed to real life experiences in dealing with children. l PQlCYla GG YOSYTNBVK Gudzm rS0n G AZN sPEciAL ED. Accomplishment and Confidence part of the Special Day Class program, each student, by law was afforded hisfher own Individualized Education Plan. In effect, the students needs were pinpointed and a program was devised to satisfy specific goals and objectives established as part of the l.E.P. Every effort was made within the department to assure a successful experience for the program this yeear. The classroom was multi-graded and an aide was provided through federal funds to assist the students. Much resource work among other instructors facilitated student achievement and assured a sense of accomplishment and confidence. l ,, wifi' ,.f,,s iw, Q74 F lx l tra l-lettlef 05 David Henna 't Brian TMS Karl Kellef Sidney Koxpas .loan lkornblull FCREIGN LANGUAGE Cultural Communication ue to an ever increasing interest in foreign language, Burroughs added two more foreign language classes to the program this year. There was filled placement among Spanish 1-2, Spanish 3-4, and Spanish 5-6. The increased numbers in the third and fourth year languages reflected an awareness of future world conditions. ln Spanish, students realistically selected courses which would offer them a practical means of communicating with our high percentage of native speakers. As an added bonus, they prepared themselves for highly competitive job market, wherein being bi-lingual certainly affords a decisive advantage. The French classes experimented with a new technique called La Philosophie de la Faute . Students immersed themselves in the French language with little or no reference to English, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Besides an in-depth study of France - its fashions, cuisine, and culture - importance was also placed on the awareness of other French-speaking countries. Futher efforts are being made to acquire newer films, videos, and other media for the foreign language department to enhance student's appreciation of other cultures. I SociAi. SCIENCE New- Faces in Social Science he school year 1983-1984 saw a reduction in the class offerings in Social Science. In order to meet the new requirements of the State Framework for the Social Studies, and to accommodate the pressures of reduced funding and lowered enrollment, many changes had to be made. Chief -among these changes was the dropping of U.S. History electives. This year all juniors were required to take the same two semester sequence of U.S. History courses. New faces in Social Science were Mr. Barney Gantz and Mr. David Goodlaw fU.S. Historyj. Mr. David Hermans took over the reins of the Close-Up program for the trip l to the nation's capital in March. Twenty-three l students accompanied Mr. Hermans to experience the inner workings of our national government. l .. .4 Z, A19 d . ofla' catherine Le XN QXKGV is Lipman an thvmas 1-A Mar Shall A6559 www' 9 1 Comexj NXCLBUQ Nm Larry NeeoheX Berber a Norm A I ZZ Oetevman Teresa Joan ne Famer Jerry QueXX 92 New P-ego Sus an Pace Phe a P-oger S Rogers-on fbi? , , Xdred FK OWN GY Lorne Mx Ge .f-fff orge PmosaXes ww Psose U06 Psosoii Pxoberk .5 Gov don Hou SG Lynn Ryerson LOUXS e Sanchez 1-x Xde Swan 93 . ns Scot Slmmo Judlxh Slrnwxan Food Can Be Your Favorite Subject f you were one of those students whose favorite subject was LUNCH, then cooking was the class for you! Without a doubt, college requirements and high school graduation requisites have always played an important role in the course a student selects -this year was no exception. ln the Senior year, students are offered the opportunity of Advanced Placement, a two-term course which may give the student college credit while still in high school. To assist in preparing the college-bound student for success in the college, Elements xx Karen Nlondfa Thomas XNeQeu9' ENGLISH of Composition and College English Review I 81 ll were offered. What if your plans did not include college? Every walk of life demands some form of communication and English 7 was designed to adequately equip the students with communication skills. A positive awareness of the necessity of such skills and their own ability to perform them, helped the students to express their own ideas and concepts clearly and intelligently. Specialized courses such as Speech and Media, Business English, and Journalism were also available. Among the course offerings in the Junior year were English 5 81 6 and Honors English Cto prepare for the A.P.J. To further enrich skills, these courses were given on two levels. The x-y level is indicative of those students who aspire toward college. The y-z level is especially geared for those who find English a challenge, The Sophomore student could select English 3 8r 4 from one of three levels to help himfher realistically establish and assess goals for Junior and Senior year. Other courses offered by the department include: English as a Second Language, Reading Lab, and Writing Lab. These courses rounded out a complete program, providing instructional formats for students with specific needs. l Rfk W Otwta eex Bxttetsw xv YK QQYOWH Wva 95 Xrene Prustxn, Gxjntnra Karnuk Judy Barron Carown Tucker, Aennnea Paton Mani NNoEXroy N rdanr r rn Gwen Fktzerrnons, Dona Nwsorna-No Ereirne EnNrn NNXnnXe Wood, Gain More, FogeX, QNQK PXo'1ureo'. Insanity is preferable, if not essential. Such was the call issued at the beginning of the year, and sixteen hardy and foolish people answered the call, and soon discovered that Akela was not just fun and games. True, many did migrate to ASB for a major portion ofthe year, but most hung around to see what was happening, and to work. Along with undesireable derelict Ftizal Lopez, many other ASB flotsam drifted in during the year to check on the progress of the ASB Section, but despite these interruptions the yearbook progressed. It always fun. Just ask any staff member. We worked hard, did our best, and hope it reflects in this book's quality. 176 The change is complete: he is The Ameri Fiocker. .A M7-W-mg Q 9 5- A I- ur N rr 2 A r 1 E l E F I I 2 I I I E I I I I ' -'Wg J AKELA CREDITS L4 . 1,, y, , - BFtlAN,FUJlMOFtl c'FuJr', 'FUJ , FU l: Editor-afi4omefg cover artist, Lettering desigmopening section, graphics. section finalsg Michaehlackson imitations, pez page editor. , L MlNESljl LPATEL Une Great RailffAssistantfEditor,L.Class Sec- f g, tion ledltor.oSports editor, photographyfphoto co-ordination, f I gfzuntirlg specialist, f'Naroon7i' i7-1 1 lrnanagerl imitationsg indian ff f GEORGE WHlTE ,iAmericanl ,lltoclserlzlj-XotiyitiesllEditor. photo i ,,... l y - lcoeordination, obnoxiousvremarksiandlphilosophioycommentary. CONC Boy! l'll tell ya, making a yearbook is a full on pain in my vertical smile, not to mention my lower posterior. No, seriously, the yearbook was extremely hard work, and required seemingly endless hours of utmost dedication to complete, but was nonetheless an enjoyable l'?j experience. The completion of this year's Akela would not have been possible without the benefits of black coffee, Vivarin tablets, and the immeasurable assistance from the following people: Minesh, l'm serious, any guy who would sacrifice sleep for work on the yearbook has got to be a hardcore yearbook member. l probably would have suffered a dozen peptic ulcers and would have had all white hair by now if it weren't your willingness to help me out before deadlines: the same goes to George feven if you look like a Sunset call girl and shop in the women's hosiery depart. at Nordstromsj as your reliability, cooperation, and original headlines proved to bail us out in the end. Oh, and George, lwasn't taking a nap, nor did l wake up at two in the afternoon: Coleen, they, I spelled it correctly- hey we learned that in Algebra j, for a person who had terminal pink eye and wasn't even on the Akela staff, you did one helluva job. Fteally, the Akela would not have been possible without your help and determination to sacrifice a good nights rest - lbesides, who else would laugh at my jokes and impersonations?j, and the rest of the Akela people: Laura, thanks for your hard work even if you felt like you didn't know what the heck you were doing: Heidi, the football section would have gone nameless if it weren't for you: Nhu Mai l now it's official j, thanks hon' for your Esprit catalogs - oh, l hate panda bears: Mike B., still want to be a waiter? Good luck at UCI: Julie, THANX!! Thanks for being a friend and a great typist! Tanya, Mike A., Michele, Viken, Laurel, Suzy, Larry, and Mike S., thanks anyway lonly kiddinglj - your help and cooperation was much appreciated. Last and definitely least- no, only ajoke Simmons, thank you for being afriend rather than just an advisor. l will never forget your advice - No Brian, they will not open the Akela room just for you at 10:30 p.m. , your joking - i How's that again? j, trivia knowledge f who was in . . . j, and dumb lines - f Come on Simmons gimme a straight answer, lf you're not helpin' you're hurtin. Not now l'm busy. j Really, thanks for everything. iOh, by the way, getasafety guard for your circular saw.j Our hard work and nothing less than perfect attitude really paid off in tht-.Q end as Akela 1984 turned ayonara, Brian Fujimori 1984 Akela Editor-In-Chief out to be a great one.
