Mrs. Libby Shearer has been chosen by the students of lohn Burroughs as teacher of the year. She attended Central Mis- souri Teachers College, gradu- ating with a BA degree. She completed her post graduate work at Kansas City University, where she received her Masters Degree. Mrs. Shearer taught school in Kansas for the next eighteen years-in the cities of Independence, Kansas City and Peculiar. fSpeaking of Pecu- liar -her favorite hobby is horse racing. She attended the 75th running of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville in 1950.7 While working for the Fed- eral Government fshe began in l944J she was transferred to the West Coast in 1954. After living on the West Coast for awhile, Mrs. Shearer decided to quit and resume her teaching ca- reer. She began teaching at IB in l954. She teaches Sophomore English and our Special Train- ing classes. She is the advisor of the all-important Pep Council and there is hardly a school sports event at which she can- not be found. The students of IB salute Mrs. Libby Shearer. . fl ff' . H 4 i , Q, sig V . Mr. Flora has earned the respect and admiration of all, and his math classes are usually full to the point of overflowing. Mr. Flora began teaching at Bur- roughs in l949. Before entering the teaching profession Mr. Flora attended the University of Redlands. While at Redlands he became well-known as an athlete, being named on the All-League Basketball and Baseball teams. This athletic influence has followed him to our campus. Up until this year he was Varsity basketball coach: this year he takes over as Varsity baseball mentor. He is never too busy for a friendly conversation or too tired to give a wor- ried student a helpful bit of advice, whether it concerns educational or per- sonal problerns. Mr. Flora is the stu- dent's idea of a first-rate teacher. C H Dl- CM Y Y ig SENIORS The Hunters of prehistoric times possessed Herculean strength. ln fact, they were so strong that they were able to kill the dangerous Diplo- das with only one blow from the tusk of a slimy Stynacosares. The Hunters were also very intelligent. Why battle with a sassy Saltoposuclius when a little salt on the monster's tail would serve the pur- pose just as well? they reasoned, Because of their extreme bravery and wisdom, they were acknowledged by all as the leaders. Qur Seniors at Iohn Burroughs have inherited most of the Hunters' praiseworthy virtues. Dur- ing school hours they bravely face their classes with only their books as weapons. Nightly they tackle difficult homework assignments and often they wrestle with enormous exams. Even with all these terrific academic problems, they still find time to take interest in student body affairs. 'O X 2-2, N f, fix Y 4 l X ,Vi lar 6' .vi 'ill levels tftllrrgm 8255.0 fam ,Q llwnfst 'lluaqt Wguauu iq, - Henry Limoge and Bob Wright are not only skilled in the use of the English language. but are able to speak a foreign language almost as well. Henry served as MC at the annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and Bob served as French Club president for a year. Mary Duby. Annette Verner, and Margaret Hartung prove that it isn't iust a man's world, even in the field of science. Although these three girls spend a great deal of their time among test tubes and bunsen burners, they have excellent grades in their other classes and are very active in all school affairs. L a ln every Senior Class there are sev- eral students who have contributed a great deal to their school and to their fellow students. Their desire to learn more about the World around them through education, and their interest in school affairs cause them to stand out. The students whose pictures appear on the following pages have been chosen by the faculty of IB to be honored with the title of Outstanding Seniors of 1959. OUTSTANDING Mike Kaplan is the outstanding student of the year in college prep courses. He has the ability to do all sorts of work. from a complicated scientific problem to an analysis of history. Mike, who plans to make science his specialty, has captured countless scholastic hon- ors. too. Not all of Mike's time is de- voted to studying, however. He is active in many extracurricular activities such as Key Club and AFS, and is one oi the best liked and most respected boys at Burroughs. Sandra Odor is the scholastic leader in the vocational field. Although her main interests lie in the field of busi- ness. she has taken many of the most difficult college prep courses in order to give herself a fine general educa- tion. Sandra's warm and friendly per- sonality has endeared her to faculty and students alike, and we feel that she will have no trouble in becoming a really top notch secretary. SENIORS Pete Hillman and Tom Tintorri were unanimous choices as outstanding athletes of 1959. Pete was a mem- ber of the All-League Basketball team two years running, while Tom was selected as an All-League foot- baller. Both boys earned starting berths on our fine baseball team, too. Carmen Gomez is active in al- most every phase of girls' sports. Having been GAA president, vice president, and treasurer and a mem- ber of Lettergirls for the last two years, she is well known for her sportsmanship as well as for her fine playing. Carmen's friendliness and humor have endeared her to many students at Burroughs. Bill Christopher, feature editor of the Smoke Signal. kept everybody up to date on the latest Burroughs events. Sheron Rehwald served as Editor of the Smoke Signal this year. Her new innovations and controver- sial editorials added greatly to the merit of the paper. Noel Iohnson. hard-working editor-in-chief of the Akela. also found time to take part in athletics and school activities. He served as Senior Class president during the fall semester and was a member of our championship B Football team. Micky McGarvey, Carol Pease and Mary Berry have held many impor- tant offices in student government during their years at Burroughs. The interest of the school as a whole has always been uppermost in their minds and they have devoted their time and energy to fulfilling the re- sponsibilities of their offices. Mary has served her school as Iunior Class secretary, ASB recorder, and Senior Class secretary. Carol was elected as ASB secretary for two terms. Mickey has held the offices of ASB recorder and ASB president. A1 Vacio and Steve McKenzie were two of the finest B athletes we've had at Burroughs in quite a few years. Both were members of the '58 Championship Football team. Be- sides being fine athletes, both boys took part in other school activities. Steve served as Boys' Council presi- dent lor a semester. while Al head- ed our Lettermen's Club this year. The seniors who merit the greatest praise in the field of instrumental music are Bill Bums and Andy Gor- don. Bill, who has been active in every phase ot instrumental music at Burroughs from dance band to orchestra, is also active in extra- curricular musical activities such as the Burbank Police Boys' Band. Andy has contributed much oi his time to band and orchestra, and served this year as president ot the dance band. Andy has also served as vice-president of Boys' Council and president of Senior Class. This may look like a row, but it's really iust Sharon Moore and Danny Richards rehearsing a scene from the Senior Play, which they helped make such a tremendous success. These two versatile people could do comedy or tragedy with equal ease and their portrayals added much appeal to many drama productions at Burroughs. fs 1, 5 5 5,941 Dance awards seemed to come easy to such talented and enthusiastic dancers as Leslie Weiner and Caro- lyn Fitzpatrick. Both of these girls captured lead roles in the annual dance performance. Their contribu- tions of time and talent helped to make the performance a smashing success. qv- loan Freeman. Lynne Kenworthy. and Harold Daugherty, are three oi the most talented performers at Bur- roughs. Lynne. who is also a very line dancer. is especially known lor her excellent acting ability. She walked oft with top acting honors at the Foothill League Drama Festi- val. Ioan has been active in almost every phase of entertainment at Burroughs. She has contributed her acting, singing, and dancing talents to many performances, including last year's operetta Annie Get Your Gun . Ioan was one of our swing- in' songleaders this year. too. Harold deserves much credit for his exceptional ability in the fields of instrumental music and singing. He has taken part in such musical ac- tivities as the IBHS quartet, the operetta. and senior choir. QUTSTANDING SENIORS The clicking of typewriters is a familiar sound to Barbara Heffleger and Cyn- thia Aubley, outstanding seniors in the field of business education. In this field. promptness. efficiency, and a sense of responsibility are mandatory. These girls have been very successful in ful- filling these requirements. T Efficient and neat would certainly de- scribe Merrilee West and Sandra Ma- lan. our two outstanding seniors in the field of home economics. Because of their interest in new ideas and their flair for fashion, homemaking will al- ways be a pleasure for them and not lust a duty. X C1 . staff? Z fy H ,f '3?3'i'f?5f ' e,,n., H 35 N' Q Sandra Faye and Carol Dickason have already won many awards for their original approach in the world of art. They both are now attend- ing weekend classes on scholarships at two of the most famous art schools in this area. Sandra is at Chouinard and Carol is at Art Cen- ter. Carol's good nature was often taxed with requests for posters, ban- ners, and program covers for school events. She unselfishly turned these out at an amazing rate. It's iust some of our Burroughs Seniors marching triumphantly out ol the assembly, as the lowly iuniors and sophomores enviously await their year of glory. The Winter Senior Council started the organization of all activities concerned with graduation. The biggest issue they had to lace dur- ing their term of olfice was what to do about the Senior Area. They settled the issue very successfully. The area will be a pleasant place for Senior get-togethers. Lett to right: Leslie Weiner, Ioan Free- man. Debbie Morris, Carol Wood- ard, Dave Banta, Ioy Ross. Ionna Baker, Ann Stange, and Ianice Freuchting. Iisiff ,wmgsfmawzvswxs Here is the group ol students the Seniors have elected to represent them during the spring semester. With the help oi the Senior guid- ance teachers they are now com- pleting the details for the last big Senior llinqs in Iune. Lett to right: Peggy Derrick, Pat Murman, Fran- cie Cornwell, Vera Laflutfa, Mary Berry, Bill Benkovsky, Leslie Wein- er, Irene Simon, Andy Gordon, Dave Schacter, Ann Stange. Sue Gunter. Marian Pagel, Sharon Crawley. Sue Forth, and Vince Delirancisco. X436 The spiritual number was one of the most exciting and intricate numbers in the show. The female leads in this year's show were captured by Carolyn Fitzpatrick and Leslie Weiner. Carolyn portrayed the torrid villainess, Nelly Bly, while Leslie depicted the thwarted wife, Frankie. Both girls gave excellent performances. ., 51. 6 fl '...!QjQ,,iz:l, f i DANCE DR MA This year's successful dance perform- ance was an adaptation of the Ballad of Frankie and Iohnny. This familiar story was told in terms of modern dance, ballet, pantomime, and music. This combination, along with the stylized settings and attrac- tive key colors, gave the performance a new vigor and originality. The cast was made up of the members of modern dance class, who were assisted by seven talented boys. This was the first performance in which boys took part. The leads in the story went to Leslie Weiner CFrankieJ, lerry Libman Clohnnyl, and Caro- lyn Fitzpatrick tNellieD. The choreography was done by Miss Bea Wojtyla and Leslie Weiner, while Mr. Bill Carpenter supervised the direction of the entire show. The original music for the production was composed by Mr. Bob Rose and his Dance Band members. The success of this type of production means that Burroughs can look forward to more shows of this calibre. KL qs... 'US -uv Secretary Susie Forth, President Noel Iohnson, and Vice-president Tom Condit served as Senior Class Officers during the fall semester. The iob of completing the Senior Area was delegated to these three. Thanks to their line efforts lalong with those of the Senior Area Committeel, seniors may now enioy the pleasant atmosphere of their own private domain. Hwwlm' Hwlfvy ,s-,Q ax Senior Class officers during the spring semester were Pat Murman. treasurer: Andy Gordon. presi- dent: Mary Berry, secretary: and Bill Benkovsky, vice-president. Besides having a great deal of fun each year, the Seniors also manage to do their part in beauti- fying the school. With the money that remains in their treasury at the end ot the year, the graduating class purchases a gift for the school. These gifts range from an air brush for the art department to a basket- ball scoreboard for the boys' gym. The lawn directory was present- ed to the school by the summer graduating class of l949. This direc- tory enables the community to be aware of the events taking place at IB. The trophy case, presented by the spring Seniors of 1951, houses the athletic trophies won by the valiant teams of Iohn Burroughs. The painting that hangs above the TV set in the apartment was pre- sented by the summer graduating class of 1955. It was painted by one of Americas foremost artists, Phil Dike. The squad went on to capture their lone win of the year from North Bakersfield a week later. Meeting Santa Monica, the Bay League champions, the Indians put up a valiant fight but were overcome 2l to 0. Foothill League play began on October 24, with Glendale Hoover. Mr. Brandt is a graduate of Linfield College in Oregon. Coach Brandt is a great believer in practicing the basic fundamentals of footballfblocking and tackling. He stresses these very heavily throughout the year. He also likes to keep his teams in top physical shape. The fine records that his team have compiled at Burroughs are ample proof that his methods pay off. Mr. Kale Canfield began teaching at IB this fall. He attended Wittenberg Col- lege and the University of Michigan before entering the teaching field. Coach Canfield spent most of his time this year working with the linemen and coach- ing our B reserve team. The l959 Burroughs B team was without a doubt the finest B team in Burroughs history. The Braves went through an undefeated season. They cap- tured the Foothill League Crown and defeated highly touted Newport Harbor in a post-season game. The tough, aggressive Brave line consistently opened gaping holes in oppos- ing lines. Through these openings scampered the hard running Brave backs. This year's backfield was considered to be the best ever. Coach Brandt summed up the season very adequately at the awards ban- quet by saying, This is the finest B team l have ever seen! These players were chosen by their teammates as the outstanding players on this year's squad. VARSITY BASKETI3 LL Coach Lloyd Lefty Thomas moved up from his position as B Basketball coach last year to take over the job of Varsity head coach this year. Since his only returning letterman was Pete Hillman, this year's high point man and All-League selec- tion, Coach Thomas was concerned mainly with rebuilding. F or this reason Coach Thomas gave many non-senior players valuable experience for next year by letting them play a great deal during the final games of the season. Having no re- turning lettermen, Coach Viskocil had the problem of forming an efficient and smooth-running team. He overcame this problem very well by building up his starting five mainly of juniors and sophomores. He combined this starting unit with a fine reserve of underclass- men. Bealizing that a winning team is made up of experienced players, he gave his boys experience by substitut- ing freely. Although our B team only won two games this year, their tremen- dous show of spirit was respected by the entire school. Sports, such as basket- ball, run in cycles and this happened to be our rebuilding year. With the great deal of basketball knowhow that these underclassmen are obtaining this year, they should furnish Burroughs with the nucleus of an outstanding team next year. Their task is an especially difficult one, since they coach three teams. The Varsity cinderrnen met with fair success this year. They dropped only one practice meet, but as yet have not been able to defeat a league opponent. This year's team has a few standout performers, but lacks the necessary depth. Coach Boone is hoping that these top-notch performers will be able to place Well in the Foothill League finals. Our B Team has had an exceptional season. At present they are tied for the League lead, and they Will undoubtedly retain this standing. The Braves should be able to go quite far in CIF compe- tition this season. Although Burroughs C Team has met with difficulty this year tlosing several meets by a close marginl, it serves as a training ground for the majority of sophomores who will become varsity performers in years to come. This season we are initiating the Burbank-Burroughs Night Track Meet. This sports event is the first of its kind, and should help to create more interest in track. Smilin George Boone completed his seventh season as IB cross country coach. Coach Boone deserves to smile alter having won the Foothill League crown lor the second straight year. CRCSS CGUNTRY Burroughs IS known throughout the Foothill League for its top-notch cross country teams. This year is no exception: our distance runners retained the Foothill League Cross Country Championship for the second straight year- thanks to the able coaching of George Boone and the fine running of Chick Mokracek. The pre-season slate of four meets was marred only by a close tive point loss to powerful Santa Monica. Mokracek and Company easily downed all of the League teams, cinching the title with a crushing 22-38 defeat over Burbank. It was during this meet that Chick set the Foothill League Cross Country record of 8:54. Members of this year's Championship squad are, left to right: Cal Roberts, Kraig Kelley, Doug Boehme. We were sorry to be temporarily relieved of the services of Carolyn Martin who was ambushed by Iackie Baldwin from behind a drinking foun- tain. They were on their way to sell an Akela to a customer. December, 1958 As our December deadline drew near, Mr. Reed Packard began to send us many of our pictures. Thanks to Mr. Packard, Bruce McBroom, Mr. Sala and the photography department for all the fine pictures they took for us. We appreciate the times we have had them trailing along behind us in search of our subjects. We also appreciated the fine Backwards Day snapshots taken by Betty Swarthout. lanuary, 1959 A new year is under way and final deadlines creep closer.
