Tian W 1 ln the spring of last year, the city of Burbank observed the passing of a traditional American institution. Dogged by bad luck and -mounting expenses, the circus rumbled out of our lives for the lost time. It had closed before it ever openedf lt seemed as thoughthis were prophetic, for iust a few weeks later, in another part of the country, the last of the great American circuses ended its final performance under the big top. ,In com- memoration of this hardy band of stalwart troupers, we have chosen the theme of Circus for this 1957 Akela. We will attempt to record a portion of the rich heritage that is the circus. 1 ' ' uwffulllrlhf ur wlwwlljuf Admunustratmn W rung Ter has come To be assocuated uth the s lv vouced umpeccably dressed gen eman w an ounces the acts an glowung tones Actu the rungmaster un the True sense of the o has cu much less glamlous uob that of even cl twenty munutes hup ng The horses legs lughtly To keep them A p the show trmmmed To an CTACLE rganuzatuons TRAINED ELEPHANTS Classes at work THE TUMBLERS Sports THE FIRCE EATERS Senuors THE CLOWNS Junuors TRAINED FLEAS Sophomores THE AMUSEMENT ZONE Entertaunung Actuvutues The glutterung parade of all curcus performers curcles the huppodrome Track un all uts splendor of spangles sulks satuns and gult costumes These unduspensable performers are The backbone on The curcus Strong and wullung to work un beluevably long hours wuthout respute They can easuly enter areas where all other modes would prove umpossuble These hard workers are cap able of mastery of skulls from the easuest truck to The most complucated of curcus routunes The tumblung team are perhaps The most famous members of The curcus A pruvuleged few have reached the stellar heughts of curcusdom and many more wull enter The portals of fame un the future Contunuous and concentrated practuce IS the only way to achueve perfectuon These fune performers wull guve our curcus fame for many years To come Thus darung Team of performers has been through much together The clown one of The most talented performers under the bug top us the master of hus art The gutted members of The flea curcus form a small but valuable part of The curcus The glutterung world of make belueve and umagu natuon comes to lufe un Thus maguc realm One us transported hugh unto the heavens and us then taken back unto the world of croakung hawkers guant stuffed teddy bears and msllung humanuty It us a wonderful fauryland one s secret love VOLUME NINE 156 N 3 x I tl :I T o l u J , - yi E J y Cf 0- J Y ll S9 u u sf u J J uullu ,ll M' yu fu! His teachers will instruct and advise him, encourage him, and steer him on the right course. Coach Platz came to us from Corcoran, where he had a nine-win, one-tie record. He started here with a comparatively lighter and weaker team and built them into a closely-knit powerhouse. Starting with a T9-O loss to East Bakersfield, we tied a highly touted North Hollywood eleven, 13-13. Then we played, and beat, a pretty fair Culver City team. Bellflower then proceeded to whomp th' fire out'n us, 28-7. Against Glendale we came through for our first Dynamiter win, T9-6, in five years of league play. Glendale was picked to go all the way this year. Pasadena Muir was tough in the first half but finally succumbed to our Farrell-to-Burton pass combo, 20-6. When the smoke cleared on Saturday morning we found ourselves in a neck and neck tie for first place with the place on the hill, Burbank. Everyone agreed that this was the Foothill League game of the year. The game, though unhappy for Burroughs rooters, was a masterpiece of showmanship and sportsmanship. Both sides conducted themselves admirably. Although the Burbank team went home with the championship, T8-O, we all knew that we had seen a tremendous game. ' Look Mo, no hands. Chuck John- son seems to be playing the ba- lancing role. VARSITY CINDERIVI EN This year we welcomed back Coach Boone as head track coach. Short at outstanding talent, the team gave a good account of themselves. Although not league contenders this sea- son, they started out by beating Pasadena by a close score, 56 14115 to 47 Tfl5. The whole meet was decided by the pole-vault. Grant Calkins came through and soared T2 feet to win. Doug Smith anchored our winning relay team with a 22 second 220. The combined times brought the best 880 relay time seen here in three years. Not since Allen, Fitzgerald, Groneman, Holzman, and Quint has there been a l:32.3 relay run. Our loss to a strong Hoover team was expected. lf the enthusiasm the boys show during football season were carried over into track season, we could come up with another championship team. This quote of Mr. Boone's has been circulated among the students, and it this pearl ot wisdom is heeded we will have another championship track team. When this annual went to press we were leading the league with a 4 win-no loss record. A coach's dream is to get his whole team back. Coach Polster has realized that dream. With Mick McNamee leading the attack on opposing pitchers, the Indians present a fearsome array of fence-busters. There's no leaky infield to plague us this year . . . Chuck Johnson and Bill Wallace have that situation well in hand. The C. I. F. championship is their goal. Heads-up baseball and a little bit o' luck will bring them that goal. They deserve it. For the seniors, it is the idea of going out in a blaze of glory. For the juniors, it is the idea of being on a championship team. For the sophomores? Through the untiring efforts of these wonderful people, our circus has been produced. A big Thanks goes to our advisor, Mrs. Manezon, who ,in addition to performing her numerous responsibilities in the Art Department, gave unselfishly of time, talent, and wise advice to help us meet deadlines. Art credits go to Charlotte Meyer and Bud Cohen, with our deep thanks for their work as co-art editors. Another big Thanks goes to Mr. Raymond Hrosikoski and the photography department, with- out whose help our circus would have been pretty dull. To Mr. Reed Packard of Packard Photo- tographic Studio, we wish to say Thank you for a iob well done. The S. K. Smith Company merits our gratitude for their fine work on our cover. Our profound thanks goes to the staff of the Yearbook l-louse, Monrovia, without whose, patience and co-operation, our yearbook could never have become a reality. We wish to give our sincere appreciation to Janet Yarick who did research on the history of the circus and who then combined her findings with her delightful style of writing to give our book the literary circus mood. Mr. Carpenter, in his quiet manner, worked behind the scene to edit our book. We wil be grateful to him forever. Our biggest thanks goes to the Student Body of John Burroughs, without whose cooperation we could not have had the privilege of recording our memories of the year l957.
