Coach Haynes took over the position as coach of the Golden Eagles from Coach Wally Moon, who did an outstanding job here for numerous years. At the present time the team record stands at 22 wins and 7 losses, a record which is sure to advance the team to the district playoffs, which it has won for the last four years in a row. The pitching staff has done a fine job and with another great season from last year's All-American David Stockstill, as well as good help from Tim Leeper and Louie Lucas, the team hopes to advance a long way in post season play. The Golden Eagle basketball team was a unique blend of three different teams who tried to become one. Head coach Dwain Roark shuffled the line- up to try to improve their winning record. Even though the teams record was only 16-14 the Eagles' did contribute many interesting moments to the fans of JBU. The roundballers also went on the road and played many highly ranked teams, losing to OCC who was rated 41 in the nation at that time. Freshman, Stanley Harris, stepped into the starting position as guard. Stanley added a lot of offensive punch to the Golden Eagles. Jack Waldron and Cal Neiman excited the fans with their long range shooting. The Eagles placed two people on the District 17 All-Star team, Gary Ashworth and Steve Matchell. Also Dwain Roark announced his plans to resign. The finale of the season was the appearance of JBU at the NAIA District Play-offs. Steve Matchell JBU Eagle. 1. Discussing strategy. 2. Once the student has been ac- cepted, he is responsible to proceed in choosing a mission board with whom he wishes to serve. The SMP helps by sup- porting the student, both financially, and prayerfully. This money comes from fund raising projects such as a Work Day and the Rocking Chair Marathon. Alumni Choir Once again, this year's Homecoming proved to be a very enjoyable and eventful weekend. Ap- proximately 345 alumni and guests were present for the festivities. Preparation for the weekend could be seen in the cafeteria as the art students began displaying their work in the annual art ex- hibit. Prospective students began coming on Fri- day to participate in the Eagle's Nest Career Day. A special convocation was held Friday morning in which Senator Mark Hatfield, who is a leading Christian layman and a member of the J BU Board of Trustees, was the guest speaker. The Ground- Breaking Ceremony followed as President Brown made a few remarks about the S3 million Learning Resource Complex, in which construction is to begin in the fall. Terrell Moose, President of the Alumni Association, did the honor of breaking ground. JBU Alumni began drifting in and many happy faces could be seen greeting old classmates after a long absence. Other festivities of the weekend included the KJBU 60-hour marathon, a band concert, an or- gan recital, a photography seminar, tennis and a baseball game. Around 450 were served Chicken Kiev at the annual Alumni Banquet with 78 graduates as spe- cial guests. The Alumni Choir sang Let the Whole World Know. Then they were invited to the The Singer . There was a Sunday morning worship service in the Cathedral with soloist, Joyce Rand and special speaker, Rusty Rogers. The weekend visitors began to go their separate ways, all feeling happy after reflecting upon old memories and feeling thankful for God's blessing here at JBU. 4.-if J..U.'IE GQLUIIDIQFE I-I I I rl' ' r' 'J S' I U'G':1- - ' I ll si fl ' ' .51 V .. The Singer was a dramatization of the life of Christ and was most successful in portraying its sincere mes- sage of God's love and Christ's suffering. To say the least the acting was superb and al- lowed for a more real to life and exciting drama. Humanity is fickley They may dress w T is , e for a morning coronation and never feel the need to change clothes to at- tend an execution in the afternoon. So Triumphal Sundays and Good. He shared some events from the Orange Bowl Championship this year and emphasized the power of positive thinking. Once again this year, outstand- ing athletes were recog- nized and various teams honored their coaches. x. n 4 Q g .35 A 1 1 w 93-ta ,A.,. For the Class of '78, this year's graduation was a most important occasion. Parents, relatives and friends were present to witness the accomplishments that had been made. Dr. Gilbert challenged the graduates to live the Christian prin- ciples they had been taught here at JBU as they stepped out into the world. Many graduates will begin working while others will go on to school. ' You politely answer, John Brown University. Oh, that's nice . . . but Where's that at? It's in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Oh. Well, where's that? Exactly what is it that brings kids from so many varied places to John Brown University? If you were to ask a student, more than likely, he would say the people and friendships made here have made JBU a special place to him. It's A Small World was intro- duced as the theme of this book. This comes from the fact that there are some 35 states and 10 countries represented here at JBU. All these people coming from such diverse background blend together to make our campus. Going to school here makes one realize that one common bond seems to bring us together and that is the bond of love we have through Jesus Christ. This common bond enables us to have true fellowship with other Christians. It is our desire that as you read through this book in the years to come, the friends and memories you will always cherish can be relived through its pages. Our 4 prayer is that you will always keep in mind the real reason for John Brown's existence - so that Christ Q may be glorified. May He be glorified through this book and through the life of every J BU student, without which this book would not have been possi- ble. Lavonda Mcllvain Karen Sanders ' Co-Editors 1977-1978 We would like to express our appreciation to a few special people Il Q . R who gave of their time in contribution to this year's PIONEER.
