,L F The Comet Named Halley The graduating class of 1986 has had the unique opportunity to be recorded along with I-lalley's Comet in the pages of history, One night, in the month of November, 1985, several astronomers tracked the pproaching comet at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson. The as- ronomers wanted to see the cosmic celebrity with their own eyes. Suddenly, omebody cried, l've found it! And there it was! The sight was decidedly nspectacular because it was still too far from the sun to sport a visible trail, it as 58 million miles away from earth. The comet looked like little more than a mudged and dusty finger print, and for the skywatchers this appearance was a nce-in-a-lifetime event. It's been called a quaint dirty snowball floating through space. It makes an ppearance only every 76 years and for centuries, cultures across the globe have een intrigued by the comet called Halley. The English astronomer Edmund Halley was the first one to observe the Omet in 1682 and predicted its appearance every 76 years. Thanks to his work, e know that comet Halley orbits the sun in a long elliptical path, moving in a irection opposite to that of the planets. It disappears at the far edges of the olar system, only to reappear regularly and pass the earth as it comes back round toward the sun. The comet can tell us a great deal about the solar system nd the universe at large. Astronomers and scientists are eager to know what comets are made of as hat information can reveal the conditions that existed at the birth of the sun nd the 9 planets some 4.5 billion years ago. The arrival of I-Ialley's comet is not just an astronomical event, it's a cultural vent that links generations. an M
