An Old City Block Each brick building sewn together With aged clothes linesg The narrow Alleyway allowing space for a small Child and stray dog. There are malnourished trees Standing in the squares of dirt Surrounded by slates of cement, reaching, Striving. The weeds push their way through The cracks in the sidewalkg they Witness the old lady's struggle. The noise of the children blends with The cool, rapid running of an open hydrantg A symphony to the widow who sits by her Fourth floor window. The ball that slams against a vacant Building, a stiffening,steady sound of tension A tremble of force launched by the palm Of a hand. The large steps forwarding each Building are chewed away at the Edges, but still they remain to be a Throne of idle conversation. The overflowing garbage cans of recycled Newspaper and wrinkled beer cans are Emptied every Thursdayg only to be filled again All this, and people return to their Homes, to their lives, to the only way Of life they know. -Lisa Wilson
