Reflection ' etlectinn The 51 hostages who were held in lran were finally released after over a year of captivity. New York, in its very particular way gave a ticker tape parade to celebrate their release. 1981 being an election year, saw Ronald Reagan ascend the Presidential seat, while Jimmy Carter made a graceful and smiling exit. A devastating earthquake left millions of Italian people in need of food and shelter and a need to know that others cared. John Bowne High School is proud to have made its own substantial contribution to the welfare of these people. A year not to be out done by earthquakes, witnessed the volcanic erruption of Mt. Saint Helena 's in the state of Washing- f0fI. Millions of people mourned the death of ex-Beatle John Lennon, a man who ironically preached peace and love to the world, but who was killed for no reason at all. Ah! The power of the media is once again showing its true force in who shot J.R.? The whole world waited in a vertex of anticipation and suspense only to be disappointed by a most unrewarding episode ot' nonsense! 1981 has brought about a revolution in the name of cometition. The John Bowne girl 's volley ball team! They went straight to the top with the expert handling of that very unpredictable ball. Way to go girls! This year has also had its share of economic problems. We say fearful goodbye to our cherished Korvettes department stores and Crysler cars. Right now its thumbs down, but who knows? Thumbs can change direction too. ' 5 A rather obscure young woman, Lady Diane Spencer, in 1981 Ends that she 'll be the future queen of England! She isshackling herself to Bonnie Prince Charles. Reflection ' eflection Man 's search for the hnal frontier is progressing in the form of the space shuttle Columbia. lt shoot's off into the wild blue yonder and man 's newest addition to space age technology. Don 't worry Mr. Spock- it might take some time but we'll catch up to you eventually. Man 's cruelty and insensetivity is once more evident in the tragic case of the children of Atlanta. The sadness and outrage with which we see the plight of the youngsters there are not enough to stop the murders which ha ve been going on. Nothing but a realization that no human being has the right to deprive another of a life will eventually end this cruel action. Fellow students, it is my pleasure to report to you that Americans still continue to have a high opinion of sports. They are highly competative and like to encourage anyone who wants to play ball. Guess how much encouragement Dave Winheld is getting this year to play for the Yankees? Over a million. Anyone having second thoughts about changing careers? It 's funny how New York City gets a taste of every thing life has to offer- including disasters. It is our pri vilage to experience a water shortage this year. The media continually blasts that their is a drastic shortage of water and that no one should use more than they absolutely have to. Who ever said life is a bowl full of Cherries? i Hemalatha Menon
