N i., .. fl 0 f '4 I Principal Pearl Warner Dear Graduates, lt is with mixed emotions that I set down this message to you. Sadness and happiness are strangely intermingled. I am indeed sad as l contemplate your departure, and happy because, for you, it is a beginning. ln view of the multi-cultural, multi-lingual characteristic of our school population today, the principal and staff must be prepared to bring together in harmony and understanding, the young impressionable minds placed under their guardianship. For, indeed, it is upon these minds that we must depend for ultimate world peace. You will soon commence to sift the knowledge you ha ve gleaned at John Bowne High School - add the knowledge you will obtain in college - and build a set of values that will carry you through life. From this education and character building, l am certain that there will emerge citizens of whom the world can be proud. Remember that wherever you go, if you are worthy of respect, you will be admired and loved. You, in an unofhcial way, will be teaching others the right way to go. l am reminded of Chaucer's description of the scholar - the Oxford clerk - Gladly would he learn, and gladly teach. - . Learn that life can be a wonderful challenge, and teach others, by your example, to End its deepest meaning. Sincerely, Kg! ,v- P 'H 1 V l ELLA!-A 1 ,!!',,:f.Je k4 C., Pearl M. Dear Teachers, Life is full of cliches, the least of which are Get out while you 're ahead and lt was fun while it lasted. We 've had some great times together but our future horizons are waiting for us. We 've stayed here long enoughg it 's about time we started looking for those horizons , Besides, if you keep us here much longer, You have to admit we 've learned something. This letter couldn't have been written otherwise. We know you feel privileged for having known us and having shared our lives with us during these special years. We 've had a lot of things on our minds - like how to attract that new kid in Math class, how to look with it , how to get our hands on some extra money and how to cut classes. Of course, your help and advice in these areas have been very useful and encouraging. We thank you kindly. To tell you the truth leven though it is being dragged out of usl we 've grown rather fond of you over the years. Therefore, don 't think your luck has changed, because you haven 't seen the last of us. When you're old and gray and shaking in your shoes lwhich shouldn 't be too far off actuallyl, we 'll be back to bother you again. You 71 see that all your pushing, shoving, grinding and nervous breakdowns, not to mention the ones you gave us, were for a worthy cause. So, don 't breathe a sigh of relief too soon, 'cause we 're not through with you yet. Senior Class 81. fl' I A QW 1 2 L B .1 5 55 lx N wil. ff? 'Y N 'Z Q? 'il Ji, Q? if mgk -3. New York, in its very particular way gave a ticker tape parade to celebrate their release. 1981 being an election year, saw Ronald Reagan ascend the Presidential seat, while Jimmy Carter made a graceful and smiling exit. A devastating earthquake left millions of Italian people in need of food and shelter and a need to know that others cared. John Bowne High School is proud to have made its own substantial contribution to the welfare of these people. A year not to be out done by earthquakes, witnessed the volcanic erruption of Mt. Saint Helena 's in the state of Washing- f0fI. Millions of people mourned the death of ex-Beatle John Lennon, a man who ironically preached peace and love to the world, but who was killed for no reason at all. Ah! The power of the media is once again showing its true force in who shot J.R.? The whole world waited in a vertex of anticipation and suspense only to be disappointed by a most unrewarding episode ot' nonsense! 1981 has brought about a revolution in the name of cometition. The John Bowne girl 's volley ball team! They went straight to the top with the expert handling of that very unpredictable ball. Way to go girls! This year has also had its share of economic problems. We say fearful goodbye to our cherished Korvettes department stores and Crysler cars. Right now its thumbs down, but who knows? Thumbs can change direction too. ' 5 A rather obscure young woman, Lady Diane Spencer, in 1981 Ends that she 'll be the future queen of England! She isshackling herself to Bonnie Prince Charles. Lucky girl! Eh? Maybe she might consider trading places? 1 g if ..,. c g Reflection ' eflection Man 's search for the hnal frontier is progressing in the form of the space shuttle Columbia. lt shoot's off into the wild blue yonder and man 's newest addition to space age technology. Don 't worry Mr. Spock- it might take some time but we'll catch up to you eventually. Man 's cruelty and insensetivity is once more evident in the tragic case of the children of Atlanta. The sadness and outrage with which we see the plight of the youngsters there are not enough to stop the murders which ha ve been going on. Nothing but a realization that no human being has the right to deprive another of a life will eventually end this cruel action. Fellow students, it is my pleasure to report to you that Americans still continue to have a high opinion of sports. They are highly competative and like to encourage anyone who wants to play ball. Guess how much encouragement Dave Winheld is getting this year to play for the Yankees? Over a million. Anyone having second thoughts about changing careers? It 's funny how New York City gets a taste of every thing life has to offer- including disasters. It is our pri vilage to experience a water shortage this year. The media continually blasts that their is a drastic shortage of water and that no one should use more than they absolutely have to. Each of us has matured in innumerable ways, creating a new person to confront the world. Some ha ve not as yet discovered their recently cultivated identities. Others are sure of themselves and their futures. Neither of the two can consider themselves whole unless they recognize their dreams. Fantasy. Reverie. Wsion. Dream. The title is insignihcant but the emotion is critical. Nothing compares to satisfaction which stems from a dream Hnally fulhlled? Life is a construction built on a foundation of dreams and aspirations. In the uncertain years as freshmen and sophomores, many of us dreamt of the glory which accompanies the spotlight after these difhcult, sometimes trying, often exciting years, the uncertainty lingers. Maturity does not necessarily come with age but rather with the realization of your dreams. Until these ha ve been satished, we will always remain freshmen. The na viete of life is overcome with the answered prayer of a dream come true. May all your dreams come true. Your hair has grown for a decade or more, Rolls down your back like the seasons before. Perhaps it's a way, a sign to grow, Life can be easier than you may know. The pen you hold has written down your sorrow of fears and tears that both have been bought and borrowed, The language you've used is near how you feel, It's time to bow down, it's time to kneel. Today has come with a promise that's old of changes and places that have not yet been told, So let us leave behind all we can't hold and start a new time again. Plant the seeds upon a fertile ground a flower can blossom without a sound cover the earth with gentle hands lt's not for us to understand Reach for the treetops who knows what you'll find. Words of a prophet, ideas that can rhyme, Squirrels may hide their food up there, Or we may find more we can share. Priceless Yet imprisoned more and more as we age till it's forgotten. But there are a few A rare species Still young despite the constant factor , . . They continue to explore, seek and discover the hidden magic of their minds Arleen Louie Time marches on and eternity waits but somehow it is never reached. And though time tries with all its might, it can only halt and beseech eternity to stop toog but it never does. Mercilessly it marches on and we are lost in the blinding storm it leaves behind. We seek it, reach out for it, but never quite make it,' to the edge, to the brink of that final turn And eternity marches mercilessly on. Past, present or future it has no time for contemplation, it marches on without realization, of all of us it's left behind. And all our lives we live, seeking to catch up to eternity and be eternal ourselves. But we are locked like books on a shelf within the framework of time, hanging on to that tender line we call hope, in the belief that one day we will be able to betray time, and leave it far behind in our hurry to find, eternity. But time is our bondage and like the turtle, it moves at its own pace. Resting once in a while, creating memories of a person or a place, which last with us forever. And eternity marches mercilessly on. Like the fleeting rabbit it does not break the habit, of ceaseless promenade. Eternity is tireless, and we are more the fool to try and break the chains which hold us. For though time is slow, it is eternal and we are not. we live in the world that time has created for us. Time is our companion, 'til that final day we perish While eternity marches on, ceaseless, tireless, merciless, against all struggle and storm, eternity marches on.
