N M ORIU MR. JULIAN LEVY There is a spirit in man that prevails over his difficult cncounters with life. The fact that julian Levyis last years were pain- ful ones is deeply etched in our consciousness. During those years, our sadness at his plight was mingled with frustration that we could notdo more for him. This type of concerned friendship was the kind he inspired. Time will dull the harsh recollections of those yearsg that is precisely the way memory should work. VVhat will remain with us will be what was - what is - important. julian combined sensitivity, talent, and wit with his capacity to bestow deep friendship on others and to inspire it, in turn, from them. The good days were the ones marked by conversation, alternately funny and aesthetically rich, and by a deeply sensed feeling for the satisfaction of honest communication. Ours is a constant search for the meaning of life. In thinking about julian, we are able to see some of the individuality that gave significance to his own life. He managed to bequeath these qualities to us by being an excellent teacher, a dedicated father, and a loyal friend. julian Levy was involved with life and lived it vigorously. His creativity, his integrity and his es- sential humanity identify him as a unique person. Who could be dissatisfied with such a legacy? 196
