Dedication for the Trailmarker The first class to graduate from John Bartram High School was known as the Trailblazers . The second class saw lit to dedicate itself to Consolation and the third class to ulnspirationw. Our class, during its stay at Bartram, has striven to add new ideals to the already high standards set by the preceding classes. lt is for this reason that we have decided to dedicate ourselves to Leadership . It was leadership which played an important part in the life of ,lohn Bartram. Had he not been the embodiment of this quality, he would never have become the great man whose name we now cherish. We, as a class, have had the unusual honor of being the first group of students to advance through Bartram from the lowest grade to the highest. ln doing so we have served as leaders for all future classes which may enter this school. As we go on in life, we shall constantly see how important leadership is to all civilization. Without it, there would be no advancement. Science, politics, and cul- ture would be at a standstill. There would be no one to look ahead and see the great possibilities in the future. Let us hope, as we go out into the world, that this quality will better enable us to dedicate our services to the advancement of mankind. It is, with this thought in mind, that the February class of 1911-2 dedicates itself to Leadership . 6

January Zttthf 1942. To the Members of the Fourth Class of the john Bartrarn High School- Your gift to the school was the painting showing the discovery, by John Bar- tram and his son William. of the bubbling springs or 'gfountainsv in Florida. This incident occurred during a trip made by John Bartram in 1765 shortly after his appointment as official Botanist to the King for the Colonies. The trip through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida followed, lasting through the fall and winter of 1766. John Bartram was at that time sixty-six years old - quite a voyage for one of his years. He had physical endurance, no hardship was permitted to interfere with the faithful performance of his duties. The 'afountainsn in Florida, caused by the up-rush of waters from subterranean Caverns, were probably similar to those that may be seen today by tourists at Silver Springs and other places. To John Bartram they were a constant source of wonder. He was fond of the strange and the unusual in Nature. His very start as a botanist was based on his Wonder at the perfection of design in the humble daisy. It was in the tield of botany that he became famous, but John Bartram's fame was no accidental thing. He had the qualities of greatness. This is shown by the friendship of other great men, their respect for him, and his extensive correspondence with famous scholars abroad. For each of you, the members of this modern Fourth Class and spiritual sons and daughters of John Bartram, I Wish these qualities that were responsible for the success of the man whose name this school so proudly bears - Faithfulness to duty, Physical endurance, An inquiring mind. i if 'J WILLIAM E. BURKARD, Principal. 5 t
