Burkard January Zttthf 1942. To the Members of the Fourth Class of the john Bartrarn High School- Your gift to the school was the painting showing the discovery, by John Bar- tram and his son William. of the bubbling springs or 'gfountainsv in Florida. This incident occurred during a trip made by John Bartram in 1765 shortly after his appointment as official Botanist to the King for the Colonies. The trip through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida followed, lasting through the fall and winter of 1766. John Bartram was at that time sixty-six years old - quite a voyage for one of his years. He had physical endurance, no hardship was permitted to interfere with the faithful performance of his duties. The 'afountainsn in Florida, caused by the up-rush of waters from subterranean Caverns, were probably similar to those that may be seen today by tourists at Silver Springs and other places. To John Bartram they were a constant source of wonder. He was fond of the strange and the unusual in Nature. His very start as a botanist was based on his Wonder at the perfection of design in the humble daisy. It was in the tield of botany that he became famous, but John Bartram's fame was no accidental thing. He had the qualities of greatness. This is shown by the friendship of other great men, their respect for him, and his extensive correspondence with famous scholars abroad. For each of you, the members of this modern Fourth Class and spiritual sons and daughters of John Bartram, I Wish these qualities that were responsible for the success of the man whose name this school so proudly bears - Faithfulness to duty, Physical endurance, An inquiring mind. i if 'J WILLIAM E. BURKARD, Principal. 5 t Dedication for the Trailmarker The first class to graduate from John Bartram High School was known as the Trailblazers . The second class saw lit to dedicate itself to Consolation and the third class to ulnspirationw. Our class, during its stay at Bartram, has striven to add new ideals to the already high standards set by the preceding classes. lt is for this reason that we have decided to dedicate ourselves to Leadership . It was leadership which played an important part in the life of ,lohn Bartram. Had he not been the embodiment of this quality, he would never have become the great man whose name we now cherish. We, as a class, have had the unusual honor of being the first group of students to advance through Bartram from the lowest grade to the highest. ln doing so we have served as leaders for all future classes which may enter this school. As we go on in life, we shall constantly see how important leadership is to all civilization. Without it, there would be no advancement. Science, politics, and cul- ture would be at a standstill. There would be no one to look ahead and see the great possibilities in the future. Let us hope, as we go out into the world, that this quality will better enable us to dedicate our services to the advancement of mankind. It is, with this thought in mind, that the February class of 1911-2 dedicates itself to Leadership . 6 Nr ' ff xx as 'M fg Q l gmwg ill Inns'-'ml Q? umm umm mg SCHOOL Assistants to the Principal Your faculty has attempted to prepare you to take a real place in society and to render valuable service. Its principles are broad enough to include in its roll of honor a wide variety of admirable types of young citizens, Individuals possessing the traits of leadership, service, scholarship, and character are awarded a place in the National Honor Society. It is a fact that from our secondary schools of America the future leaders of the nation must come, and they, if they are to serve their country fully in this, its time of need, must find a way of searching out potential leaders and training them in civic usefulness and in civic ideals. The National Honor Society ollers one method by which a high school may fulfill this obligation. Long may it stand in the glory of its fine principles and help keep America foremost and fine - and as always MAmerica the Beautiful . 21 WJ-.9 , ,, , '- Th h e paintings w ich adorn the first Hooris main corridor were presented to the school by the various classes in the Fall term of 1941. You'll be seeing quite a lot of us from now on 'cause we're pretty important, you know. Now, as class mascots, we'd like to introduce our sponsors, Mrs. Rotman and Mr. Ott. They have been really swell to the whole class and have done a fine job in leading the class. Let's hear what they have to say for themselves. at wtf 1 E4 Af0oI and light-hearted I take to the open road Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before mr leading wherever I choosef' The Song of the Open Roadu-Walt Whitman. We have worked and played together. The relationship has been most pleasant. Guidance has often been offered you which you have graciously and, I hope, profitably acceptedg but now, yours is the open road, and yours to choose wherever that road may lead. I know that you will choose well. May your choice be crowned with happiness and success. MR. WILLIAM H. OTT Dear Friends of the Class of I911-2: I deeply appreciate the honor you conferred upon me when you selected me to co-sponsor your class. The realization of the importance of this honor is the keener, since I feel through me, you in reality expressed a desire to be guided by your faculty. Three years ago you entered our grand high school with the desire to fit yourselves for honor- able careers. You have shown your mettle and made good. You are grladuating with a fine foun- dation in your chosen field of study and are going out into a world of endless opportunities with purpose and courage. I am proud of you and congratulate you on your achievement. I expect each one of you to fulfill your obligation of living a vital, useful life. I hope the ties which bind you to your Alma Mater will be increasingly stronger and more beautiful. Sincerest personal thanks, congratulations and all good wishes. 34 Xgg. 'I' CLASS OFFICERS Here are some other folks we'd like you to meet: the class officers. The students made a fine choice when they picked these officers to represent them. Now, how about a few words from the class president, Bob Durningl As we, the class of February 1942 face our commencement year in the John Bartram High School, we hope that we have done as well as the classes before us, and also left something in the school of which we may be proud. It was three years ago that the John Bartram High School was ofhcially in- augurated. We, with our new principal, Dr. Burloard, entered as freshmen to later become the first class to spend its entire high school life in John Bartram. We feel deeply honored in this, and hope that the following classes will have the same devotion for their Alma Mater. Our senior year was very pleasant in regard to our activities. The West Point trip proved to be most beautiful and educational, and something we shall always remember. The dances in the gym were enjoyed by everyone. The Prom, Class Day, and the Dinner Dance were the highlights of our senior term. All this could not have been accomplished were it not for the fine Work of our sponsors, lVlr. Ott and lVlrs. Rotman, and all the other teachers and students who helped to make our senior year a success. May I extend to Dr. Burkard and the members of the faculty my sincerest gratitude and thanks for all they have done for us during our stay at John Bartram? I should like to wish them, and also my fellow students, success and well-being throughout the future years. ROBERT DURNING. 35 RNINC MARY WAIID LILLIAN ZELLMAN NORTON BOTEL Vicefresident Secretary Af-ting Treasurer Have you ever been lost? Not exactly lost but - well, lost. I knew where I was, but I wanted to go somewhere else. I had enough trouble looking for the building that I wanted, but when I did find it, most of my troubles were still before me. . .But I'm getting in front of my story. Here is what happened. CI hope that you will pardon my ego if I write it in the first person singular.J I'd be willing to wager that the person who originated this system of planning streets also invented jig-saw puzzles. You couldn't find the right building in this town even if you knew it was beside a fish cannery. I wish that our national Senators, Bruce Andrews and George Sinclair, would have some money appropriated so that Rosalie Margulis and Jim Hanes could make some of those direction signs for which they are famous. Our weatherman, Robert Bennett, even says there is no sign of rain. - Let's see. . .I was looking for the office of Peter Di Mauro, who was going to design a ship for me. I have a crew but nothing for it to sail. My captain, Al Del Raso, hired Elmer Radtke as the first mate, William Engel as the second mate, and Stanley Radcliffe as the third mate. Sounds like bigamy. - I think I'll ask Officer John Sutton the way to the Ray Cochard Build- ing named in honor of that great construction engineer. Oh! You say it's beside the Harry Glick Theater...Here's the theater. There's William Sheridan fixing the wiring on the mar- quee. It says, HThat great impressario, Sidney Engle, presents Leonora Bohn, and Morton Bo- tel in tPenmar Ward Takes a Bromo', by Wesley Schneyerf' I notice Bob Teller is there with his band featuring Pat Maiocco, Americals greatest clarinetist, Jimmy MacDowell tromboning, Vin- cent Nocito drumming his fingers, joe Kadison fiddling with his beard. - Good trick if he can do it. . .Ohl Here's the place. The building without a flaw. I knew that George Wallace P NJ 'a w' ' - lit -4 -h - CLASS would forget something. . .Since the desk clerk, Sammy Weinstein, is asleep, Illl ask the tele- phone operatress for the room number. 'fSay, you look just like Margiell. Who? Margie Gear?l' f'Come to think of it, you look like Estelle Smith, my secretary? Listen, the name is Doris Simpson, and state your business. Huh? Oh, hels on the ninth floor. By the way, how did the Dodgers make out today? You say Jack Fortin found the ball they dropped in '41? I thought Bob Durning would get it. Anyhow, he was in there pitching. ...I feel sick. I see two John Taylors and three heads. Oh! The one center is cab- bage. Well, at least they got ahead. Here's the elevator and its operator, who is Lennie Cutler. Up or down?,' What's the sixty-four dollar question? Come on. I have a game of Mah Jongg to finish with Walter Swartley, Art Tatum, an'l Al Tustin. . . .Here are the officers. Let's see. UWil- liam B. Schulze, jr., attorney-at-law. Secretary, Grace Beach. Here is the office of Michael Valenzals munitions works. If at first you donlt succeed, try, try a gunf' I wonder if Annabel McCorkle is his secretary. It is she or Lillian Orlick. . .Ohl There's the elevator. f'Heyl Wait for mefl Mmmm. Coleman Cutler is operating this one. Guess he's working his way through Penn State. Ninth floor, please. What a shaky elevator. No wonder the elevator company of Joseph Coren, Ernest Punchard, and jack Stauffer dis- solved. I guess that business has its ups and downs. . .Here I am, I hope. It is very breezy on this iioor. Nice blue wallpaper. I imagine that Gemma Ricci designed it...That looks like john Corbett in that revolving balcony. Must be another of Charles Scott's inventions. Hello John. What are you doing in this building? Building? I'm fiying the mail to Pitts- burgh. Here's Morton Schwartz, my mechanic. P R O P H E C Y john Rejebian is one of my passengers. Par- don me, but could you direct me to the ninth floor? 'fSorry, but I can direct you to the First National Bank. My name is Benjamin Frank. I'm a bank director. If you want a loan, just make an appointment with my private secret- ary, Harriet Brodkin, or Eileen Duffy, my not so private secretary. Goodbye. ...My last chance is the protographers studio. What a motto! ttMiracle Photo. Co. If it's a good picture, it's a Miracle! The owners are james Crouse and Alexander Xena- kis. Oh well! Things are bad all over. f'Say, Alex, you have quite a collection of pictures here. There's one of Pennsylvania's football team of '4S. I see Bill Confalone, Lloyd Van Syckle, Vincent De Falco, and Charles Faust. Heres the basketball team also, Gordon Burke, Paul Carden, and Chester Kochesperger. This is a picture of Christopher Brennan, soloist, James Entrican and George Haas of the Phil- harmonic, and Mary DiMaggio and Regina Mullen, trippers of the light fantastic. Here's a camera oddity. It looks like a parachute jumperg Andrew Ruffin, as he floated by line- man, Robert Dugan, had an upheld arm which appeared to jab Bob's eye. Seems to be a job for optometrist, Stanley Simkins. This picture on the end shows daring. Ruth Smith is thun- dering down David Holmes' newly paved street and George Allston, when taking a metal bar from his garage to Charles Heaton to be welded, stepped to within three feet of the curb. I can still hear the bell as Robert jones drove his ambulance to the Albert Kleeman Hospital for Defenseless Pedestrians. I hear they used the car as a book end for the unabridged edi- tion of f'My Boy Friends!! by Virginia Pelle- chea. Ah! - a picture of the finalists in the Miss America contest. There's Helen Milligan, Mary McCullen, Jane Gamage, Ruth Minter, and Elaine Wells. . .Enough of this browsing. I!ll ask the clerk to direct me to the ninth floor. The sign says his name is Frederick Grabenstein. 'fPardon me, clerk, but could you show me the way to the ninth floor?'! !'I'm not the clerk. My name is Richard McAlonan, hiring agent for this firm. I have to hurry. There are five girls waiting to see me about getting a position of secretary here: jane McMichael, Mary Nichau, Elizabeth Har- rison, Dorothy Fleming, and Antoinette Ciocco. The secretary we have now has been here for several years, but she's on her last lap now. ...And so with this I bid a fond farewell to this center of industry, wandering in the vici- nity of the twenty-fifth floor. I flopped down disgusted onto a chair. I wished I was in West Point with joe Procopiog in Alaska as Herbert Roebuck tried to sell refrigerators to the eski- moes. He was there four months last night. I wished I was with Harry Hartz, as he dic- tated his biological notes to Evelyn Slutsky. I can see joseph Allston as he delivered the mail to Robert Allen, foreign correspondent of the Morris London Times. ...I guess there is nothing I can do but put on this radio. ffHello everyone. This is George Lunn, your favorite radio announcer, telling you to eat Helen Lambls meat balls. They won't just harden your muscle, you'll be petrified. And now I turn you over to james Sweeney, con- ductor of the Tell it to Sweeney' hour. - Sir, I want to present Miss Freda Schwartz, White collar girl. 'fGood afternoon, Miss. And what is your problem?'! ZaX -j- lly -- 3z Z IS. UA very good problem. I'm sorry I can't answer you. It comes under the jurisdiction of the Smith quads, Elizabeth C. Smith, Elizabeth I. Smith, Mary K. Smith, and Agnes Woods. How did that last name get in?H Didn't you ever hear of a Woods-smith? ...Next case, please. Hey! There's a bottle missing from this casefl Robert Weyhmuller and Robert DiBen- dictis invented an automobile that would run on Pepsi Cola? Robert Fagan and Kathryn Vanaman made the trial run. i B -923 CLASS 'fWell, what happened to my bottle? ffThey thought it was after seven o'clock, and Meredith Bollinger and john Woodcockls soda fountain would be closed. ffI'll have to get my female investigators, Carmina Zappone, Caritas Peiffer, Adelina Fos- chi, and Roberta Barrett on the case. Zzork. . . ...What a program. I'll try another sta- tion. H...And now I turn you over to john Fereshetian, who will describe the 13th run- ning of the Fifty Cent Stockings Handicap. Take it away. HI wish I could take it away, but I signed a contract with Emily Wolf and Charles Can- non, who incorporated to make animal crackers. Well! The horses are lined up at the electrical starting gate, which was built by William Samp- son especially for the john Thilker race track. Theylre off! Onion, ridden by William Tracy, is coming strong. William Miller's mount Skin, is on the outside. Warren Lenton's Cab- bage is ahead. And the winner is Banana Peel, who just slipped across the finish line. He was jockeyed by William Hamilton. The horse's owner, jane Hunnicutt, that million dollar heiress, is placing a wreath of roses from Doris McCarrick's nurseries, around his neck. - The horse's, not the jockeyls. After all, the horse did all the work. ...No wonder they laughed at Marconi. Ifll try again. 'fHello! Your fashion illustrator, Anne Bogardus, is back with the latest styles. The bustle has definitely disappeared. I consulted with professional models Betty Currinder, Lou- ise Baus, Jean Hock, Frances MacDonald, and Kathryn Vanaman. They say it is gone, and they can't take a back seat to anyone. And now, ladies, here is Jack Preston, who will give you exercises that will keep your figure perfectf! 3 ...Walter Steimel and James Powers are the radio engineers in that studio. I wonder why he didn't cut that program off. . .I guess if they had, George Beck, the production mana- ger, would have cut him off - without a cent. .. .Well, what do you know? Therefs the elevator. Hey, wait. Ah! This one has a hostess, Mary Czaika. !fNinth floor, pleasef, - If Tom Connor was here, he'd sentence the PROPHECY other two operators to hard labor: listening to Wilhemina Curry talk about her etchings or putting curls into Doris Hollard's hair. I think she goes to Albert Harris and Robert Gilchrist, beauticians and pan handlers. to have her hair set. . .What a slow elevator! -Ioe Mazzeo could get down faster by using the stairs. . .This must be my door. I think I'll sit on this bench and rest. . .There must be other oflices on this floor, too. Theres William Hughes in a conductor's uniform. I believe that's Olga Kalinikoff with a pile of books. She must be a librarian. One book is How to Sell Advertisements by Theo- dore Butler. That is Robert Conway and Ber- nard IYatt's book on electricity: HCurrent Events . How to be a Nurse in Six Easy Lessons is written by six nursesg Angelina DiAugustina, Marjorie Cohen, Harriet Wilson, Mary Philips, Doris Trice, and Mildred Butler. The six lessons from Madame La Zonga are more interesting. - Seems to me that I hear music. There's Beatrice Geiger in a studio playing the saxophone with a piano duet, Betty Hartsock and Elaine Yankeloff. Then there are Betty Slipakoff, Betty Marshall, and Lillian Zellman dancing on feathers. Trucking on down as it were. ...I wonder why there is a crowd in the Edwin Owens Employment Office. Oh, I un- derstand. That best built man, james Kotakis, advertised for a secretary. I see Marion Cubit, Mabel Frazier, Helen Dever, Catherine Young, and many others. So many that I doubt that Dorothy Doll could add them up on her comp- tometer. ...Boy that smells good. They're fresh coffee beans. I think I'll buy a pound. The smell comes from a coffee shop owned by Martha Ditmer and Alma McAfee. It seems to be a very popular place with the teachers from the Lane Fenstermacker School next door. Some of the teachers are Eleanor Hauser, Betty Gil- more, Connie Bowen, Manito Wagner, and Howard Freedman. - Well, I came here for coffee. The waitress is Ethel Bernstein. Can I get a pound of coffee in the bean on this floor? UNO sir, youlll get that upstairs. This is the ground HOOI17, 4'What? - I've been tricked. It won7t K.-.--Y happen again. This time I'll wake up. If I wear out my shoes, I can have Thomas Doherty fix them. Whew! Now I know how Captain Walter Lasuk and Corporal john Grimes feel marching with their troops. From now on, I'm going to be careful in my dealings with elevator men. They are liable to take you up, run you down, and let you out. They never move with- out pulling wires, youlve got to be up and down with them, you give them the floor, and they7ll tell you where to get off. You can't believe them, they never stay on the level, always shift- ing from one story to another. . .What does this plaque say? 'tStairs built by Reginald jeans, rail carvings by Charles McGrath and Robert Fagan, and platform rugs designed by Nicassio Ursinof' They!re Rip Van Winkle rugs. They have an unusually long nap. . .There are a few more flights to go. Oh! . .. 'fExcuse me. My name is Maurice Hamel. Could I interest you in some life insurance? 'tSell it to the elevator operators. They'll need itf' ...This is the ninth flight. That's odd. This seems to be a series of medical offices and clinics. Here is the Herbert Kirschner Dental Parlor. It is called a parlor, because it's a drawing room. What a bevy of nurses, Maria Mirjonts, Emma I-Ietzer, Sara Gordon, Cath- erine Boyson, and many others! Look at that governess, Josephine Cassello, with that little boy looking into the dental display case. Listen! UNurse. If I had to have false teeth, I'd take that pair. 'fHush! It's bad form to pick your teeth in public. ...It wasn't worth stopping. Here's a modern dental office. Everything is done with machinery. Illl have to see this. MAgnes Muhlenback at your service. May I show you around? This is the automatic R rch'-4 ,', sponge, mirror, forceps, etc. It was invented by Elizabeth Patton, my fellow nurse. Instead of having the aforementioned articles placed in your mouth, this simple gadget shoves SO pounds of cotton down your throat. This was suggest- ed by David Clark, who said he was missing tools lately. Elizabeth Boyd will explain that other machine to you. Offices, offices, names, professions, secretaries. Can't let go of yourself like that, Herb. Not when Francis Tucker, Benny Weintraub, and George Snyder have worked up to high executive offices. You have to carry on. Ninth floor, remember? Oh yes. Well, here I go again. They ought to call me Perpet- ual Motion Simon, but there's a limit. I'll ask everyone on this floor, and I'll take an average. ...What a slew of directions! Andrew Yeatts, putting down his monkey-wrench, told me to go south, but I ducked. Attorneys Frank Wisher and Donald Frey wih their secretaries Grace Tepper and Beatrice Elliot told me to go West. If I went as far west as they told me to, I'd probably meet the spirit of Horace Greeley walking back. Isabel Meurer and Ethel Holmes told me to take the stairs on the right. I wouldn't know where to take them if I had them. I should have known better than ask Doris Ewing and Dorothy Mellar. They were so wrapped up in their dress busi- ness that they told me it was on the bias. Wo- men are all bias. It's bias this and bias that.- Two of them told me to go up these stairs. I think that this time I'll take some escorts to make sure. ...Now Ilm settled wih five escorts. Executive Council MAn organization of great worth and abilityfi This is what has been said of the Council in past Trailmarkers. The Council has guided the class in its activities and made decisions on important questions as well as chosen committees for prom, dinner dance, and trip, and collected dues with unfailing accuracy each dues day. The main purpose of this small group, consisting of the four class officers and a representative from each group, is to give the students an opportunity for expression. Cabinet members bring questions, suggestions, and complaints from the student to their meetings. Action is then taken on the proposed changes. rw X F Q ' C You know, if the class is to get what it wants it has to l have representatives to tell the sponsors about their wishes. Due to excellent student co-operation the lunch-room, after three years of service, is still as good as new. All of the food used in the cafeteria is carefully selected and prepared under the supervision of trained dietitians. A staff of sixteen women is kept busy cooking this food for the ravenous students. All of the kitchen accessories are of the newest models and of the highest quality. The average consumption of food per day in the cafeteria is staggering. Five hundred bricks of ice cream, three hundred platters, one thousand pretzels, eight hundred and fifty frankfurter platters, and three hundred bottles of beverages are sold every day in the lunch-room. The large quantities purchased make possible economical buying and there- fore high quality. It is for these reasons that the John Bartram Cafeteria is one of the most modern and economical in the city. 77 HARRY HARTZ Editor-in-Chief TRAILMARKER BETTY HADLEY Associate Editor ,1 f JAMES CROUSE ELEANORE HAUSER Associate Editor Associate Editor We, the members of the Trailmarker DR. FELLCER Sponsor Staff, should like to take this opportunity to thank all those who cooperated with us in any way during the time we were compiling and editing the record book. All of the teachers and students were most helpful and willing to do all that they could to assist the staff. To both Dr. Fellger and lVlr. Diloia the literary and business sponsors of the record book, goes our warmest thanks and sincerest appreciation. No record staff had two more willing and helpful sponsors. Dr. Fellger's main task was to advise the staff in its work. Not once did she order or command us in any way. We are very grateful for her many helpful suggestions. Mr. Diloia, who took care of all the financial details of the book, did a fine job of keeping us out of the red. Witholit his expert work the record book could never have been a success. 78 STAFF lVe would also like to extend special thanks to Mr. Boerckel, Special Assistant to the Principal. who took it upon himself to keep things running smoothly and to help us over any difficulties, and to Betty Moore who, although not an ollicial member of the stall, did a great deal of secretarial work on the book. All in all, I think we were most for- tunate in having such a co-operative faculty and student body. We have striven to turn out a book which would please everyone and we hope that we have succeeded in our pur- pose. CANDY COMMITTEE Do you remember patronizing the candy tables during your 12A term? We hope you do, because the candy you bought that term helped to increase our class treasury. The Class of February 742 followed the procedure of the preceeding senior classes who also sold candy after school hours to students and teachers. The sweets were selected and ordered each week by Mrs. Rotman, who also took charge of all bookkeeping concerned and supervised the girls who sold the candy. This money-making scheme proved to be a great success. At the close of the term, approximately fifty-five dollars were deposited in our treasury. 84 ' . , fa..Zfa1M 2 ..., . ., . Bartram's Athletic Association ln every school where athletics are one of the activities, a supporting financial association is needed, Our school has created the Bartram Athletic Association, better known to the students as the A. A. Under the sponsorship of lVlr. Ball the A. A. has done a remarkable piece of work. It has performed many duties, including the equipping of all athletic teams, transportation to the games and proper seating facilities at them, the printing of A. A. books and schedules. lt represents all students either as members of our school athletic teams or as spectators at the games. A tribute is due to lVlr. Ball who for the last three years has prepared athletic programs and the present system of buying an A. A. book. The capable Work of Mr. Ball, President lVlike Valenza, and all A. A. representatives, past and present, is greatly appreciated by the students. 38 W! First ROIL'-' Mary Boyle. Betty Currinder. Alice Coder. Second Row! Bartram High School was clirnaxed with a Bartram victory, 13 to 7. There was no scoring throughout the first half due to a stubborn Overbrook defense. The Maroon and Gray boys were first to score. In the third quarter the Clippers drove 50 yards to Overbrook's 30. A pass, Spillane to Captain Davis, was good for a Bartram score. .lanczyk converted. Score: Bartram 7, Overbrook 0. The Hilltoppers could gain nothing through Bartram,s line and were forced to kick out of bounds to the Clippers, 30. A 70-yard drive was climaxed with Spillane heaving a touchdown pass to Gullifer. Jansczak's conversation was low, as the third period ended. Score: Bartram 13, Overbrook 0. The Clippers were on the march again, late in the final quarter. However, a Bartram scoring play rebounded and Hoggard intercepted a pass and galloped 90 yards for an Overbrook touchdown. Pecussi kicked for the extra point. Score: Bartram 13, Overbrook 7. The Thorntonmen stiffened and checked any further Overbrook threat. The game ended with Bartram in possession of the ball. Second Row- Alex Kenakis, Honey Cochard, Fred Paiste, John Taylor, Augie Gregory, Al Chunko, Bob Briggs, Tony Janczk. Third Row- Bob Evans, Dick Smith, Howard Ore, Frank Rutunno, Joe Pacocha, Bill Engle, Coach James Thornton. From the beginning of spring practice un- til the very last game, Coach Thornton could be seen drilling his boys to block hard and tackle hard. Thus he has emphasized to his squad the two fundamentals which make a good football team, and Coach Thornton did turn out a good football team. The Clippers established an excellent record of five wins, two losses, and one tie. The team opened the season with the new Public High League Champion, West Philly. Bartram out- played the Speedboys throughout the battle. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. Penn Charter knocked any thoughts of an undefeated season out of our heads when they won 7 to 6. Bartram then romped through successively Olney, 19 to 03 Gratz, 19 to Og Germantown Academy, 12 to 7g and Valley Forge Military Academy, 27 to 13. The Clippers in the game with V. F. M. A. piled up their largest score of three seasons, 27 points. A 6 to 0 defeat at the hands of Southern was a hard one to lose. At the Thanksgiving game, Overbrook was caught by Bartram on the re- bound and suffered a 13 to 7 defeat. Coach Thornton developed one of the best passing attacks of any school in Philadelphia. Bartram owed its scores largely to the expert arm of Speakman and two great ends, Captain Davis and Rejebian. The defense strength of the team was strong, as is shown by the record. Only one team was able to score more than one touchdown against the Thorntonmen and that was V. F. M. A. A tribute is due to Mr. Thornton for his excellent coaching. Spending most of the spring term with the squad, he drilled them into a co- operating machine. Due to numerous injuries, he was forced to shift his lineup frequently, but was always able to put a strong 'team on the field. Coach Thornton taught his boys to play good, hard, clean football, and he gave them the fighting spirit to come from behind and win. Mr. Thornton was a great athlete and now he is a great coach. The chief aim of this organization is to keep the graduates interested in their Alma Mater. As older, more mature individuals, they may have a definite influence on the policies of the school. The secondary purpose is to keep graduates in contact with each other socially. A dance is sponsored by this group in the spring, and another in the fall, the night before Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving Dance is to become a tradition of Bartranfs Alumni Association. Music Festival Executive Committee, January 16, 1942 The Bartram Music Festival, which is modeled upon the All-Senior High School Music Festival, was held in our auditorium on the evening of January l.6, l91l2. It included all the musical organizations in Bartram. Miss Easley, who shouldered the entire responsibility, directed the vocal ensemble of two hundred voices, the thirty-six piece orchestra and the girls, choral group of twenty-four voices. Mr. Goldman, director of the band, conducted that group of forty pieces. Although this was the first Inusic festival which Bartram has had, it will be repeated annually hereafter. The soloists for this presentation were George Lunn, Beatrice Geiger, Chris- topher Brennan, and John Rejebian. The following students served as the committee for sale of tickets and clerical work: Betty SlipakoH, Lillian Zellman, Sara Gordon, Louise Baus, Robert Durning, Maryann Harris, Robert Allen. 101 THE LAST WORD Among the most pleasant contacts of a teacheris life is that in which she may meet students on an equal footing. A spirit of comradeship between staff and sponsor has gone into the making of this book, with free and friendly criticism of every step by all. The staH proved so able that the sponsor,s part was to sanction rather than to advise. She hopes the association may abide as a fragrant, living memory. ALICE E. FELLCER. Bartram's Library The Library at Bartram is housed in one of the finest rooms in lhe building. Our book collection numbers several thousand and is growing every term. lt is a store- house of material for recreation and information and as such is one of the most popular of the school services. The kindly help offered by Mrs. Pinson and her staff adds to the enjoyment of a visit to the Library. 102 FOR EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE - T R Y - McGarvey's Ca e 5729 WOODLAND AVENUE PHILADELPHIA An Education IN SCIENCE offers lo qualified young men and young women today exceptional opportunities for interesting and successful careers.
