With Miss Landers, Brother Shawn, and Brother Benilde as co- directors, dnamatic activity came to life once again at Bapst . . . Tryouts, rehearsals, the tireless work of a faithful backstage crew, endless ejorts for perfection and authenticity on the stage-all these activities preceded Broadway's first major venture, Dickens' Christ- mas Carolf' A success on the basis of audience reaction, and a worthwhile presentation in the op.inion of qualified critics, Christmas Carol proved an enriching experience for the entire cast . . . Out- standing art work in providing scenery for the play was done by Edmund Paschal . . . While each member of the cast gave a flawless performance, Ronald Coleman did exceptionally well in the dijicult role of Scrooge The dramatic reading of Miss Kedderis between the vuarious episodes of the play accomplished the desired objective-a sense of continuity and oneness . . . When the final curtain was drawn, the cast had every reason to feel that drama on Broadway had passed its first test with high honors, and that further progress would be made. STARTLED is Scrooge CR. Jane McDonough reluctantly breaks her engagement to young Scrooge CA. Pelletierj as the Ghost of Christmas Past QW. Hallj looks on. Broadwaq... my The year 1956 wlasn't more than a few days old when Miss Lan- ders, Brother Shawn, and Brother Benilde turned their attention to the possibility of doing a one-act play at Bapst. Eventually, the cast was informed that Thornton Wilder's Our Town, a play ojering an intimate view of life in a small American town, had been selected . . . Willie Gray, who has a prominent role in the play, aids greatly in unfolding the interesting story of life in a small town. David Kiah and joan Ward provide the romantic element, while Mary Kenny does .an excellent job in her role al a mother. Playing the part' of husband and wife-and doing it well-are Mark Soucy and jean McHale, While the date for this second major Broadway appearance is some four weeks away, there is very little danger of its not being an outstanding performance . . . As this section of the yearbook goes to press, the co-editors report that Our Town as interpreted by Bapst will be seen in the State One-Act Play Contest. Thus ends the first chapter of drama on Broadway-a new chapter in Bapst biography-made possible by the talent, cooperation, .and enthusiasm of the cast, directors, land backstage crew.
