in the BHPSTONIHN Hnd we are grateful . . In 1872, less than two decades after the dedication of St. John's church, the Rev. Jiohn Murphy opened the 'doors of the newly built St. Mary's church, and a throng of proud parishioners entered the nave of this sacied edifice to assist at the first Mass. Undoubtedly, Fr. Murphy celebrated this Mass with feel- ings of joy and thanksgiving. And those fervent souls privileged to be present for this occasion shared his feelings, for this day witnessed the fruition of a cherished dream-the coinpletiion of St. Mary's church . . . The work initi- ated by Fr. Murphy has been zealously carried on by his successors. The second pastor, Raev. Michael C. 0'Brien, erected St. Mary's school and convent. The third pastor was the Rev. Michael E. Walsh, who was followed by the Rt. Rev. Michael C. Mcllonough. Fr. Jere- miah McCarthy, who died in 1923, was the Bishop's choice as the fifth pastor. The death of Fr. McCarthy brought the Rev. Martin Cleary to St. Mary's as pastor. He was followed by the Rev. Timothy Houlihan. The eighth pastor of St. Mary's was the Rev. John F. Nelli- gan. Upon the death of Fr. Nelligan, the present pastor, Rt. Rev. Edward F. VVard, was appointed by the Bishop to lead and guide a parish blessed with traditions of faith and devotion. Rt. Rev. Thomas J. Nelligan for Thy qlory 'The affability, zeal, humility, and sincerity that one finds so prevalent in Monsignor Ed- ward P. Ward makes the parishioners of St. Mary's fortunate in having him as their spiritual leader. Always anxious to contribute much to the spiritual betterment of those un- der his charge Monsignor Ward has also show-ed great interest in the material prob- lems of his parish. His renovation of St. Mary's interior stands in evidence of this in- terest and awareness of temporal problems and needs. Born in Portland on Nov. 14, 1900, Edward P. Ward finished college at Holy Cnoss. Hav- ing entered the seminary at the completion of his undergraduate studies, he was ordained at the age of twenty-eight.. His first assignment was that of assistant at St. Joseph's Church, Portland. In 1932 he became assistant at the Cathedral, and he also assumed the duties of teacher and Director of Athletics at Cheverus High School. Devoted to his work among the young, the zealous Father Ward spent. his summers engaged in the many duties that fell upon his shoulders as Director of Camp Gnegory. In 1943 he became Rector of the Cathedral. Seven years later he was ap- pointed pastor of St. Mary's Church, Bangor. Finally, in March of 1952 this zealous priest of God was elevated to the rank of Monsignor, a fitting acknowledgment of his zeal and un- selfishness. They do all things Blessed by God with long years of priestly service, Monsignor Nelligan has devoted more than thirty years of his sacerdotal life to the very church where he was baptized in 1871. During this long period Monsign-or Nelligan has given of himself unsparingly for the bet- terment of his church and his parishioners. He has directed his people with wisdom and affection, and he has done much to enrich thc spirit of Catholicism in his native city. While 1891 is the year young Thomas Nelli- gan entered the seminary, undoubtedly he had thoughts of the priesthood at an earlier date as a student at Holy Cross College. Ordained in 1894 by Cardinal Richard in Paris, Father Nelligan came to North Whitfield where he served as administrator. In 1895 he was ap- pointed curate at St. Mary's of Bangor, and he continued in this capacity until 1899. Later that year he returned to Nort.h Whitfield, and he remained there as pastor until 1909. His next move was to St. Mary's of Augusta, a parish which he directed conscientiously and capably until 1919. In April of that year, he was assigned to his native city, and he ar- rived here on the first Sunday of that month to assume the burdens of pastor at St. John's Church. His long years of undivided service and his deep interest in the welfare of his parish played no small part in the develop- ment of St. John's, and in the propagation of that faith so dear to him.
