A A -Q ...M acl. we view the past A landmark in the history of Cathioli- ci-sm in this area, St. John's Church stands as a tribute to the zeal of its first pastor, the heroic Fr. John Bapst, and to those courageous pioneer Catho- lics of some one hundred years ago who lived in an era of hostility and perse- cution. Dedicated in 1856 by Bishop Bacon, it gives eloquent testimony to their faith in the midst of insurmounta- ble obstacles . . . Intimately associated with the history of St. John's are those spiritual leaders designated by God to carry on the work of the Rev. John Bapst. Fr. Henry Gillin succeeded the found-er of this parish. He was fol- lowed by the Rev. Clement Mutsaers, and the Rev. Edward McSweeney, who served as pastor for thirty-four years. On the death of Fr. McSweeney, the Rev. Patrick J. Garrity became pastor. In 1919, the Rt. Rev. T. J. Nelligan came to St. John's as Fr. Garrity's suc- cessor. The sixth pastor in a span of nearly one hundred years, Monsignor Nelligan has served in this capacity for thirty-six years. . . . Erected by Fr. John Bapst in answer to the need of his day and of future generations, St. John's ha-s en- riched its children spiritually. It is the duty of those who have drawn great profit from this heritage to pass on to younger generations a love for the great faith that made Fr. Bapst's dream, St. John's, a reality.
