A A -Q ...M acl. we view the past A landmark in the history of Cathioli- ci-sm in this area, St. John's Church stands as a tribute to the zeal of its first pastor, the heroic Fr. John Bapst, and to those courageous pioneer Catho- lics of some one hundred years ago who lived in an era of hostility and perse- cution. Dedicated in 1856 by Bishop Bacon, it gives eloquent testimony to their faith in the midst of insurmounta- ble obstacles . . . Intimately associated with the history of St. John's are those spiritual leaders designated by God to carry on the work of the Rev. John Bapst. Fr. Henry Gillin succeeded the found-er of this parish. He was fol- lowed by the Rev. Clement Mutsaers, and the Rev. Edward McSweeney, who served as pastor for thirty-four years. On the death of Fr. McSweeney, the Rev. Patrick J. Garrity became pastor. In 1919, the Rt. Rev. T. J. Nelligan came to St. John's as Fr. Garrity's suc- cessor. The sixth pastor in a span of nearly one hundred years, Monsignor Nelligan has served in this capacity for thirty-six years. . . . Erected by Fr. John Bapst in answer to the need of his day and of future generations, St. John's ha-s en- riched its children spiritually. It is the duty of those who have drawn great profit from this heritage to pass on to younger generations a love for the great faith that made Fr. Bapst's dream, St. John's, a reality. in the BHPSTONIHN Hnd we are grateful . . In 1872, less than two decades after the dedication of St. John's church, the Rev. Jiohn Murphy opened the 'doors of the newly built St. Mary's church, and a throng of proud parishioners entered the nave of this sacied edifice to assist at the first Mass. Undoubtedly, Fr. Murphy celebrated this Mass with feel- ings of joy and thanksgiving. And those fervent souls privileged to be present for this occasion shared his feelings, for this day witnessed the fruition of a cherished dream-the coinpletiion of St. Mary's church . . . The work initi- ated by Fr. Murphy has been zealously carried on by his successors. The second pastor, Raev. Michael C. 0'Brien, erected St. Mary's school and convent. The third pastor was the Rev. Michael E. Walsh, who was followed by the Rt. Rev. Michael C. Mcllonough. Fr. Jere- miah McCarthy, who died in 1923, was the Bishop's choice as the fifth pastor. The death of Fr. McCarthy brought the Rev. Martin Cleary to St. Mary's as pastor. He was followed by the Rev. Timothy Houlihan. The eighth pastor of St. Mary's was the Rev. John F. Nelli- gan. Upon the death of Fr. Nelligan, the present pastor, Rt. Rev. Edward F. VVard, was appointed by the Bishop to lead and guide a parish blessed with traditions of faith and devotion. Nelligan for Thy qlory 'The affability, zeal, humility, and sincerity that one finds so prevalent in Monsignor Ed- ward P. Ward makes the parishioners of St. Mary's fortunate in having him as their spiritual leader. Always anxious to contribute much to the spiritual betterment of those un- der his charge Monsignor Ward has also show-ed great interest in the material prob- lems of his parish. His renovation of St. Mary's interior stands in evidence of this in- terest and awareness of temporal problems and needs. Born in Portland on Nov. 14, 1900, Edward P. Ward finished college at Holy Cnoss. Hav- ing entered the seminary at the completion of his undergraduate studies, he was ordained at the age of twenty-eight.. His first assignment was that of assistant at St. Joseph's Church, Portland. In 1932 he became assistant at the Cathedral, and he also assumed the duties of teacher and Director of Athletics at Cheverus High School. Devoted to his work among the young, the zealous Father Ward spent. his summers engaged in the many duties that fell upon his shoulders as Director of Camp Gnegory. In 1943 he became Rector of the Cathedral. Seven years later he was ap- pointed pastor of St. Mary's Church, Bangor. Finally, in March of 1952 this zealous priest of God was elevated to the rank of Monsignor, a fitting acknowledgment of his zeal and un- selfishness. They do all things Blessed by God with long years of priestly service, Monsignor Nelligan has devoted more than thirty years of his sacerdotal life to the very church where he was baptized in 1871. During this long period Monsign-or Nelligan has given of himself unsparingly for the bet- terment of his church and his parishioners. He has directed his people with wisdom and affection, and he has done much to enrich thc spirit of Catholicism in his native city. While 1891 is the year young Thomas Nelli- gan entered the seminary, undoubtedly he had thoughts of the priesthood at an earlier date as a student at Holy Cross College. Ordained in 1894 by Cardinal Richard in Paris, Father Nelligan came to North Whitfield where he served as administrator. In 1895 he was ap- pointed curate at St. Mary's of Bangor, and he continued in this capacity until 1899. Later that year he returned to Nort.h Whitfield, and he remained there as pastor until 1909. His next move was to St. Mary's of Augusta, a parish which he directed conscientiously and capably until 1919. In April of that year, he was assigned to his native city, and he ar- rived here on the first Sunday of that month to assume the burdens of pastor at St. John's Church. His long years of undivided service and his deep interest in the welfare of his parish played no small part in the develop- ment of St. John's, and in the propagation of that faith so dear to him. THE BAPST Under the leadership of our head mentor John Mitchell, the Crusaders grimly took sword in hand and sallied forth upon the gridiron to do battle with the traditional rivals of the purple and white. The Bapst squad was hard hit by in- juries with Co-Captain Ron Geagan, Bill McHale, Mike Samway, and others sidelined for the better part of the sea- son. But under the Spartan influence of Co-Captain John McCarthy, they struggled gamely to break a long losing streak. VARSITY GRIDDERS: First row Il. to r.j D Kiah, L. George, M. Muldoon, L. Mark presiding. The Sodality of Our Lady of Good Counsel, established for the spiritual betterment of the mem- bers plays an i.mportant role in the lives of many students through- out the nation. At Bapst, where the sodality is under the guidance of Sister Mary Mark, the follow- ing girls functioned as officers during the school year: Joan Ryder, Prefectg Mary C. Flanigan, Vice Prefectg Mary H. Vicke1's, Secretary, and Beth Largay, Treasurer. Two of the ofhcers, Joan Ryder and Mary C. Flanigan, attended the Summer School of Catholic Action at Holy Cross Col- lege as representatives from John Bapst. It was an excellent prep- aration for the leadership they later assumed as sodality officers. THOU ART SENIOR SODALISTS 11st row, l. tio r.J A. Kelleher, J. Jordan, J. Ryder, J. Perry, J. Ford, P. At Bapst the sodalists held monthly business meetings, and monthly spiritual meetings. At the latter the Little Office of the Immaculate Conception was recited by all the members. In accordance with a tradition of long standing, Bapst sodality members joined sodalists throughout the world in pre- senting the Holy Father with a. spiritual bouquet for Christmas. . . . Although the Bapst sodal- ists carried out a pnogram that emphasized personal spiritual growth, they did not neglect the corporal works of mercy. Among the acts credited to them was.the annual practice of distributing food and fruit baskets at Thanksgiving. More important than that were the many individual acts of mercy performed by the sodalists- acts that stressed a Christ-like awareness of the needs of others .... Lionel Thibodeau as Retreat Master, was a time of -special grace and inspira- tion for all the students. Eloquent, zeal- ous, and indefatigable in his labors to bring all closer to Christ, Father Thibo- deau did not spend himself in vain . . . Throwing himself wholeheartedly into the Girls' Retreat, CMarch 8-111, he emphasized the importance of putting first things first, of dedicating our lives to Christ by accepting Him as our way of life .... HOLY MASS is finished . . . And the Rev. L. Thibodeau, preceded by acolytes Bromby and Baker, leaves the altar. Ll led Aloft . . The Boys' Retreat, fMarch 15-183, conducted by Fr. Thibodeau, was fruit- ful in the sense that it brought manifold blessings to those who viewed the Re- treat Master's conference and medita- tions as stepping stones to a better and higher life. Not a few of those who made the Retreat considered it the most enriching experience of their lives . . . Others came away convinced that the profits of a Retreat well made justify looking upon this time spent so close to Christ as a privileged period of grace. As the 1955 RAPSTONIAN goes to press, whatever chances for a successful season the Bapst team holds depends on the performance of veterans Captain Jordan, and Mike Welch. Second year cindermen, Harper, Clarke, Samway, Butcra, McCarthy, and Merrill will also play important 1'oles in determining the season's relcord. Niovices Bourgoyne, Muldoon, and Galant look .most promising of the newcomers . . . Triangular meets this year found Bapst in competition with Old Town, Orono, Ellsworth, Blue Hill, and Brewer. Bapst also participated in the P.V.C. and State Meets. LOOKING PENSIVE are Coach Brother Shawn, Al LeClair, Amistant Student Coach, and letterman Mike Welch. Perhaps they're thinking of ways and means of thwarting the opposition in the triangular meets. 'Q 91 g.gii.,Qp .
