Nat Crowley gave the principal speech on the occasion and expressed his since1'e regard for each and every member of the squad. As the letter awards were distributed to a good many juniors and sophomores, most of us were thinking in terms ol' the coming football season. Coach Nat Crowley smiles con- fidently as he begins the 1949-1950 basketball season. Here he is seen contacting officials for his home games. As athletic director and coach, Nat is a busy man the year round. When the 1949-50 basketball season opened, Coach Nat Crowley could count on only one veteran from his tourney finalists of last year. When question-ed about his chances the coming season, Nat could promise only a mediocre record. The first few games showed that the team, al- though lacking in experience, was high in spirit. The club surprised the fans when it upset the Brewer Witches 46 to 26, and proved that it would be a hard team to beat for the rest of the season. The Crusaders con- tinued to topple their P. V. C. rivals but found diilicultv with Waterville, Stearns, and Bangor. Hitting their mid-season stride they bowled over a highly rated Old Town team. The game which the team and the fans wanted to win the most was the second encounter with our city rival. Ilaiigor High. Standout D5,'l'fOI'YY12lI1CQS were given in this game by Tom Mahaney, Ken Ilarvejx, Greg Pooler, and Billy Spencer. The latter proved to be the sparkplug in the Crusader team when he pushed through the winning marker in the overtime period. With a tourney play-off in mind the C,'rusaders traveled to Millinocket and lost to a good Stearns if-am hy a close margin. Tournament time drawing closer, the Hapst team was forced into a play:-off' with Gardiner High. The long trip to Waterville did not hamper the Crusaders, however, and they won a hard- eeii'ned victory to place them in the Eastern Maine tournament at Orono.
