30 US, Aoloms new home forVieinomese Q fi' Adams was the high school for 14 Vietnames refugees. They began at- tending olasses in September, 1975 after being airlifted from areas in and around Saigon during the war evac- uation period. The students spent several months adjusting to their new surroundings and were helped in the difficult transition period by Mrs. Nga Jones, a tutor and interpretor, by Adams reading specialist Will Bee Homles, and by countless others including Alpha school where they were team members. Their impressions of America were good and they like the options avail- able to them in the Adams cirricu- lum. Someday, however, they ex- pressed a desire to return to their homeland. labovel Troung Chi concentrates on her work,' ltopl Mario Mitchell helps Tinh Weaver and Troung Chi on an assignmentg lrightl Tinh Weaver pra- ctices her writing skills. Things have changed alot from the beginning, when I walked into Quincy with mv funny British accent and my standard English spel-- ling. I like the people at Adams. live been to other schools around Portland and in Washington, but l feel Adams is the high school l like best. The classes l'm taking are neat, and some of them are not even included in other school's programs. The tea- chers don't look at you from behind their desk. I could name a whole bunch of fantastic people, starting with Connie, my all-American mom and art teacher, Art, my best slang teacher, and Sid, who initiated me to the mysteries of Psychologyg l had the most interesting discussions with, Marilyn, my gymnastics coach and also enjoyed classes and friendship with Dick Mase, Julie, Mary, Billie, Chuck, Jean and all the other people, both teachers and students who are my good friends.
