Flowers for Algernon consisted of many short scenes called blackouts. The reason for this technique is that it followed Charlie Gordon, a retarded person, from his childhood to his adulthood. Sometimes the play flashed back on Charlie's childhood as he remembered it as an adult. The Gold Room Theatre QC-214i stage was enlarged for this production, creating six different acting areas. Senior, Eric Hull, did research during the eight weeks of rehearsals. He observed retarded people and studied their reactions, physical appearance, etc. This helped him to create an extremely realistic portrayal of Charlie Gordon. Ann P. The 1975 varsity football team may not be the best in the history of Adams, but it will be long remem- bered for what it accomplished on October 3. After suffering through 21 consecutive defeats, the team rose up to smite Jefferson, 18-6, in a convinc- ing victory which spurred them to play the best football in their remain- ing games that the school's fans had seen in three years. Even though the season mark was a lowly 1-8, first year coach Dave Damcke said that overall, he was very happy with what we've done. We made mistakes and got hurt for it, but even though that happened a lot, we stuck together and were competitive in all but one game. Citing the homecoming game with Grant Q0-47l as the worst effort of the season, and quickly contrasting this game with the Jeff victory and the strong effort against Madison, Dam- cke noted the inconsistent mental attitude which plagued the team all year. Some top individual efforts of the season included the receiving of James Arceneaux, the passing and quarterbacking of Jerry Bell and Peter Demas, the running of halfback RB. Mayes and the defense of Dave Perkins and Bruce Klein. 1 76 - ss X ,F ff L vs' .Q J W ? Coach Cottrell White said his team stayed together despite the poorest season ever for an Adams football squad. The jayvee team, however, enjoyed a good measure of success including victories over Grant, 12-63 Lincoln, 24-Og and the topper of the season--a 62-12 drubbing of eventual jayvee division champions Madison. ln that game, the offensive star was Quinten Sanders, who rushed for 230 yards and tallied five touchdowns. irightl Darryl Lewis and Terry Hickmon block lor Randy Moore during fresh- man game, lbelowl frosh football rally, clockwise from top right, Lorrl Baker, Linda Lelsy, Melody Winden, Shirley Stevens. 80 FRESHMAN FOOTBALL TEAM: lbottom rowl Mike Shaughnessy, Victor Legall, Darryl Lewis, Dewayne Williams, Greg Newman, Dennis Decius, Marvin English, James Welday, Greg Soles, Manager Natalie lvanoff, ltop rowl Coach Cottrell White, Stewart Donaldson, Wayne Huddart, Don Mitchell, Alan Amado, Randy Moore, Terry Hickman, Rick Handy, James Gray, Calvin Ellet, Coach Steve Anderson. Such was the story of the 1975 soccer season which saw the Adams team drop all seven of its league encounters. We just couldn't put it together, Bonfiglio commented. With only three players, Mark Ell, Mark Fowle and Russ Woods returning from the 1974 squad, lack of experience was a season-long problem. Two close losses included a 7-6 decision to Marshall in double over- time in which leading scorer Ell garnered the three-goal hat trick , and a 2-1 loss to Grant in the closing game of the season. Bonfiglio said he was pleased with some aspects of the players game, including good spirit and rate of improvement throughout the season. For the first time in the school's seven year history, Adams sent a runner to state competition. Senior Ernie Harris competed in the state cross country run and finished 47th out of 112 runners. But the strength of the team lay with the jayvee runners paced by sophomore Darrell Jabin who finished first in one meet and high in the standings in several others. Also, Jim Benbrook and Mike Wetter usually finished in the top six runners at this level. The women's team did well individually, but as was similar to the men's varsity, finished well down in the team standings because of lack of participants. Only Karen Gressel and Natalie lvanoff competed. 5, Team wins Few for gymncists Overall team weakness but top individual efforts, a common state- ment when referring to Adams athlet- ic teams, aptly describes the men's and women's gymnastics teams for 1975. Even thought both teams managed only one win fthe women against Jackson and the men against Mar- shalll, several standouts were tops in their events. For the women, top all-around gymnast was Marca Weinberg who. was especially strong in floor exercis- es, Monica Wickstrom on the balance beam, Robin Cusma on the vault, and Cindy Boyd and Tammy Evensen on the uneven parallel bars. The men also had some fair performances from Troy Dickenson on the vault, Mark Renwick on the rings, Mike Jump and Ken Jones on the parallel bars, Jobel Verzosa on the side horse and George Clauser on floor exercises. lbelowl team members cheer on good performance, lrightl George Clouser competes on side horse, labove rightl Jobel Verzosa holds position on par- allel bars. GymnasHcs Hoopsters finish lackluster 12-10 season Most people might call the 1975-76 season dismal, but men's varsity basketball coach Milt Adams called it a move in the direction toward a championship ball club. Adams stated, This was a suc- cessful season. Our 12-10 record was six games better than last year's and it was the first time in three years we had a winning team. Although our team had a winning record, we lacked the ability to adjust to pressure at the right time which is a determining factor to become a championship team. After jumping out to a 3-0 league record, the Patriots lost close road games back to back to Madison and Grant, and started to decline in confidence. In individual events, Ernie l-larris captured fourth in the mile run, Jerry Bell snatched second in the 440 preliminaries, and Jodell Bailey took two seconds in the 100 and 220 preliminaries. During the season, because of the small size of the squad, many athletes would each compete in up to four separate events. Coach Cottrell White said he was proud to see the Varsity men work so hard. The strongest events for the jayvees were also in the running events. Jim Benbrook, Darrell Jabin, Chuck Smith and John Pickett all took firsts throug- hout the year. I've had a blast and l'm going to miss everyone a lot. --Vicki Arlt lt's too lenient with most of the students. Dennis Gearhart The lunchroom is like a hog pen. Elementary schools keep their lunch- rooms cleaner than this high school does. --Fannie Bell Its been exciting, a good four years. If I had it to do over l'd start off better. --Terri Schneider Adams has been okay for the last three years, but it's this last year I have to think about. I have learned a lot since I have been going to John Adams High School. --Jacob Johnson I'm sorry that these last four years have passed so soon. I've only done a little of the many things I wanted to do. But it's been fun, even with the ups and downs. --David Niemenen 138 Graduates' Quotes I guess I've learned alot about myself and other people since I started going to Adams and I'm not sorry for going here, because to go here you've got to be strong and most important you've got to .... BE FOR REAL. --Sherry Harris If Adams is truly the sad story which seems to be so apparent more often than just on Monday mornings, then it is because the students, not the faculty have made it that way. --Howard Ish If astudent is responsible he or she is given a lot of independence. An Adams student can be treated as an adult. This respect is too often nonexistent in other high schools. At Adams I have learned and grown. I am now in touch with my career interests and talents. I have felt a part of the school and will miss it greatly. --Jim Uomini Adams has meant a feeling of freedom to be able to find yourself, and once you have done that, a chance to develop that finding into what you want to be. Adams is the greatest center of education live attended. I appreciate all of the teachers treating us fthe studentsl like people, instead of like numbers! IIII always treasure my last four years. --Charles Johnson Jennifer Aborn 11 Mary Albay 10 Mary Ann Ancheta 11 Vicki Arlt 11 Lorri Baker 9 Adrian Beasley 11 Randy Boggess 10 Cindy Boyd 9 William Brink 12 lvlicha Brown 11 Robert Carpenter 10 William Carter 12 Sonya Chiles 10 Collin Daggett 9 Kerri Danielson 11 Janet Davenport 11 Audrey Davis 11 Troy Dickinson 10 Jeff Duncan 12 Sharon Eshoo 9 Tom Evans 10 Ray Fuller 11 Dennis Gearheart 12 N Maria Gilson 10 Toni Goods 11 X 1 i 1 1 dvi- CQJJFQ1 i X NV 1' iw .2-ya Ai is fs. 7 '55 1 , W a ig f lx x it 1 E1 . . 9 .N X -,.- , ll ,.,,f . ,-,, 2545 , , , ,mal.,f,, Q. 9,41 'A - ' -1 1 'rc's A ff' I 4' , W 1? 2 if u x Q lj' , , 3- N J 1 ig' 1 L sq, 4 1 N 2263 5 1 47 A it W 1 ' 1? is -'1 ' :Que Q N , ' r,- ,, , ,ag 4 'S ' ss' Q silky. , n: a Y 'fi- fe s v'vf fkggzl , . e mi , ,5 55+ X 5 1 ,mf 44 '- 'M as ,, .iv 1- Wi, -.f 'fgf V , MQ if' -.5 l l 'N' l ,,..,, rf 43 Q .,, 5 3 1 2 ALPHA STAFF. lseatedl Lloyd llfleskimen, Rhetta Stafford, Steve Andersong lstandlngl Paul Clare, Harold Johnson, Sallie Faist, Joan Janin, Tom Swanson, Bob Fahsholz. 140 Alpha lil. 9 q ,Q .h::,....b.. A well liked principal, Dr. Don Holt, left at the end of December. A decision to drop two schools-within-school next year was Made in mid-February in responce to declining enrollment. Favorite teach- ers will not be returning as the size of the staff becomes smaller. Yet this is so much like life in the twentieth century. One major charact- eristic of our time is change - and change at an accelerating rate. Per- haps the key to success in life today is maintaining confidence and cheerful optimism in the face of decreasing predictability about tomorrow. If this is so, then the 1975-76 school year provided opportunity to face signifi- cant change while enjoying the support of school staff, other students, and home members. lt may be that John Adams High School as it seeks to provide a humane, realistic education for life, performs a unique function in that it prepares students for a society where change is the norm. At any rate, as your interim principal, I have enjoyed the associations with students and staff that are alive and inquiring. And, even though some of the changes may have been threaten- ing, the general behavior of the students of John Adams High School reflected a maturity rarely found in American high schools. The year has been a good one. The students of John Adams High School can be expected to make important contributions to edu- cation and society in future years. May we have the good fortune of working together again at another time. Bernard E. I only hope we caught a little bit of everyone's reflection in this book. The staff and I would like to thank Meier and Frank Photo Studio, our American Yearbook Company representative Bob Paffrath, the graphic art students who set our type, and most of all Jim Flice our advisor, who worked harder than any of us to produce this yearbook. I would also like to thank the entire staff for the many extra hours spent on the yearbook, now sit back and enjoy it! Debbie Smith Editor - w , w 'Q ,Y X x.
