Someday this page will be brittle with age and the picture faded, but the deep appreciation that impelled us to dedicate this book to you, Miss Evans, will still echo from the leaves ot the '37 Town Hall. 3 D By the time this Book arrives in circulation, the last Town Hall Meet- ing for the Class of l937 will have passed into history. Nearly five hundred citizens, in whom this school has learned to repose a considerable measure of confidence, will graduate into a larger sphere of service. John Adams wishes you well. E. E. STANDING: Eugene Sliwinski, Steve Tikva, Bill Setele, Joe Restifo, Buh Kolesar, and Manager Sal Marino. Basketball . . . Losing the entire first team by graduation, the John Adams Rebels opened the '36-'37 campaign against the strong South l-ligh team with only two Iettermen. After a shaky start in which they lost their first five games, the locals began to click and won three straight before losing to East Tech at the Public Auditorium, Adams lost its one independent game played with Bedford. Captain Warren Karlinske and Paul Pillar were consistently outstanding. Vince Brice's great defensive play won him acclaim, while Bob Kolesar's fighting spirit inspired the team. Fighting finishes, especially in the Central and Benedictine games, characterized the varsity play. V Led by Fred Rozelman and Ted Cordray, the second team had a fair year. John Adams-26 South-35 Unloosing a barrage of baskets in the final quarter, the South l-ligh Flyers won the opening game of the year by defeating Adams, 35-26. Con- sidering that there were only two lettermen back, Coach Edwin L. Krege- now expressed satisfaction with the team's showing. John Adams-I6 Holy Name-44 Coach Kregenow startled the school with his decision to cut every senior from the squad in order to build for next season. Holy Name took advantage of this decision by severely trouncing Adams, 44-l6. John Adams-25 West Tech-31 In an effort to start the team off on a winning spree, the Adams line- up was revised for the fourth time in as many games. ln spite of this, the West Tech Carpenters snipped Adams' hopes by defeating the locals, 3l -25. The seniors were back in the line-up. John Adams-I9 Glenville-26 lnability to tally from the charity line proved costly to the Rebels as the Glenville Tarblooders chalked up. a 26-l9 victory. The Maroon and Gold quintet missed 9 out of l4 free throws. John Adams-30 Cathedral Latin-27 This game produced the best scoring combination of the season. The local rooters saw the Rebels eke out their first victory of the year, 30-27. Paul Pillar and Captain Warren Karlinske garnered 22 points between them. John Adams-30 Central-26 Rallying in the closing stages of the game, the John Adams quintet swept into its second victory by outfighting the Central five, 30-26. Paul Pillar and Elmer Smolik were outstanding with their determined play. John Adam:-24 St. Ignatius-17 Displaying the winning spirit for the third straight time and inspired by Bob Kolesar's fighting play, the Adams Rebels downed a small but fast St. lgnatius cage team, 24-l7. Adams overcame an early St. lgnatius lead by steady playing in the second half. John Adams-30 East Tech-41 The East 55th street lads, paced by Pete Lalich, upset the Adams five, 4l -30. The East Tech-John Adams game was part of a basketball program at the Public Auditorium for the High School Athletes lnjury Fund. Lalich was high point man of the evening with l4 points. Bill Setele of the locals was close behind with l2. John Adams-31 Lincoln-34 Playing one of their best games of the year, the John Adams Rebe's fought throughout the entire game and the powerful quintet from Lincoln just managed to squeeze out a 34-3l decision. The brilliant playing of Captain Warren Karlinske, who totaled i6 points, kept Adams in the fighting. John Adams-43 West-29 The West High Cowboys lost to the Rebel squad as Adams branded the Cowboys, 43-29. More points were scored by the Kregmen in this tilt than in any other previous contest. ' John Adams-29 Benedictine-24 Apparently a weak team, the Benedictine squad did not resemble one as it battled all the way and finally lost, 29-24. Vince Brice of the locals and Vic Tanski of Benedictine led the scoring, each netting lO points. John Adams-25 Collinwood-39 Adams couldn't seem to find itself in the enormous Collinwood gym, and the fast-breaking quintet from Five Points won, 39-25. Paul Pillar paced the Rebels with lO points, getting eight of them in the first quarter. John Adams-19 East-3'I For the final game of the season, the Rebels encountered the Blue Bombers from East, who were playing without their all-scholastic Jack Oberst. However, the Bombers had Ben Borchert and John Mlakar who paced them to victory, 3l-l9. lt was the last high school game for Vince Brice and Ed Lewis. FRONT ROW, left to right: Tom Mahoney, Alex Woronkoff, John Chojacki, Elroy Retzlafl, Bob Kolesar, Morris Mativetzky John Rode. BACK ROW: Eugene Sliwlnski, Howard Mlckovsky C pt ' N' k B ill nd Angelo Barille. Football . Spurred on by the fine showing of last year's squad which placed second in the Senate standings, l35 boys, including ll lettermen led- by lCAaptc:1in2gIick Barille, turned out for the first spring football practice on arc . In addition to Captain Barille, who was an All-Senate choice last season, Coaches George Kozak and Edwin G. Caldwell welcomed back three other backfield Iettermen, quarterbacks Howard Mlcklovsky and Eugene Sliwinski, and halfback Angelo Barille. A. Barille was out a portion of last year's season with a broken arm, The presence of the Barilles gives the Rebels one of the few brother combinations in the Senate. Protecting the forward wall are seven returning veterans including ends, Ray Gorski and Joe Palgut, tackles, Maurice Dworkin, Morris Mativet- sky, and Alex Woronkoff, guard, Bob Kolesar, and center, Elroy Retzlaff, Because of the shortage of experienced guards, one of the tackles may be tried at this position. This year, for the first time, a real city champion among Cleveland high schools will be chosen. ln the newly enlarged Senate which includes the four Catholic schools, Benedictine, Cathedral Latin, Holy Name, and Saint Ignatius, the league is divided into an East Side and West Side division. At the termination of the regularly scheduled games, the leader of each division will meet in a game to decide the city championship. As Coaches Kozak and Caldwell near their third season at John Adams, they can look back with pride upon the success they have brought to Adams on the gridiron. An outstanding trait of the Rebels this year was the fight- ing spirit which enabled them to come from behind time and time again and gain victory when it looked as if they were doomed to a hopeless defeat. Baseball .... A well-organized hardball baseball league came to Cleveland and John Adams this spring for the first time in the form of the Metropolitan League, composed of teams from 24 schools of greater Cleveland. Because of the great number of entrants, the league was divided into three sections: the central group, to which John Adams belongs, had as other members Cathe- cslral Latin, Cleveland Heights, Collinwood, East, Holy Name, Shaw, and outh. Chosen to coach the Adams team was Edwin L. Kregenow, who also guides the basketball squad. One hundred boys answered Coach Krege- now's first call but, because of the limited equipment, the squad was pruned down to 20 by the opening game on April l9. During the past season there was no definite plan of financing the team but, by means of special shows and the sale of booster tickets, suits and catching equipment were purchased. Although this was Adams' first venture into a hardball league, the team proved to be no weak sister in her division, for many members of the team previously had established themselves as players of high caliber in the Cleveland Baseball Federation League. The introduction of baseball to John Adams promised to offer many boys a chance at inter-school competition which was denied them prior to this time. Although most boys have never played football or basketball, commented Coach Kregenow, many of them have been swinging bats since they were in elementary school. In addition to the regular schedule, the squad played several inde- pendent games with teams not on the schedule. Intramurals .... With three new sports making their debut in the Adams sports intra- mural program, athletics attained a new high for a successful season. Hand- ball, paddleball, and badminton are the newcomers to the gymnasium where practically every sport is played. lncluded among these are basketball, volleyball, tennis, and ping-pong. With l27 Glasser winning the first round of the basketball champion- ship and 2l2 Pierce capturing the second round, the two teams met for the championship of the school. Out to avenge a previous first round defeat, the Piercemen not only won the game but humiliated the Glassermen by the lop-sided score of 55-l2. Captain Joe Bilka led the onslaught with 21 points. The basketball championship gave Pierce a clean sweep of fall and winter intramural sports as this homeroom also captured the football crown. Their baseball record added to their other achievements has assured many boys of this homeroom their intramural A's. Albert Willinger, 3l9 Dawson, succeeds Ray Riven as the ping-pong champion of Adams. The new officers of the Intramural Council are Franklin Cech, l27 Glasser, president, .Walter Wiciejowske, l38 Stehn, vice president, and Robert Barber, l i2 Augspurger, secretary. SECOND ROW: Cain Jones, Rudolf Henderson, Glen Brooks, Don Bob Lange, Melvin ROW: Gasper Von After producing a field team which made one of the best records in the history of track at John Adams and which ranked as one of the finest teams in the state last year, Coach R. E. Knesal, at the start of the season, looked with apprehension toward the outcome of this year's schedule. This resulted from the tremendous loss of last year's lettermen. Early in the season, when asked for his prediction, he stated, lt just depends on how good the other teams are. The hopes of this year's squad have been centered around a small but sturdy nucleus of six returning lettermen, Thadieus McCroy, Conner Strick- land, Bob Taylor, dashmen, James Haynes, miler, Jay Nichols, hurdler, and Elmer Roubla, half miler. Since last season's team failed to elect a captain for the '37 squad, the present group of trackmen went through the campaign without a leader. For the sixth consecutive time the track team was self-supporting due to the acceptance of the season pass by the student body. Two seasons ago Allen P. Owens, teacher of physical education, es- tablished a wrestling club at John Adams in an effort to develop sufficient interest and ability for competition with other schools. So satisfactory was the response that wrestling is now a major sport. This year, Edwin G. Caldwell took over the coaching duties. Even though final records give the local boys a .500 rating with two defeats and two victories, Coach Caldwell believes that the '37 campaign may be con- sidered a success as it succeeded in establishing wrestling as a ranking sport in this school. After a strong start, the team was handicapped by the graduation of Joe Sanfilippo in mid-season. This semester's squad was built around Frank Costello, Bob Reimer, and Phil Travagliante. After the final meet, Coach Caldwell said, The boys have done their best to give wrestling a permanent place in this school and l believe they have succeeded. All members of the team are returning next year and we have hopes for a great season. Golf .... One year ago, athletic activity in John Adams took another step for- ward when golf was introduced to the student body. This spring golf com- pleted its second year under the direction of Coach George Kozak. Although golf has gained renown in other schools, it is comparatively unrecognized here. Regardless of this, last year saw the development of George Kosterbanik '36, who placed second in the city amateur golf tourna- ment among senior high schools and also placed in the state amateur contest. Bob Lash and Frank Spremulli were the only returning veterans from last year's campaign. Tennis .... Faced with the task of replacing all but three of last year's men, L. S. Irish assumed the coaching position of the tennis squad, succeeding Ted W. Ptacek. Henry Chesler, Harry Hajek, and Martin Miller formed the nucleus around which Coach lrish built the team. Most promising of the new candidates were Sanford Cohen, Sanford Speert, and John T wgler. Adams did not travel far for its matches, encountering all East-side schools. Miller managed the team throughout the season. The Adams tennis teams have been subject to much criticism because of their mediocre records. The best answer to this is the apparent lack of interest in tennis, which is evidenced by the small number of candidates who try out for the squad. B ASEGALIN Girls Athletics . . . Speedball! Basketball! Volleyball! Baseball! These are the sports offered throughout the year to John Adams girls who are interested in athletics. Girls are able to earn nine athletic awards by playing in intramural games or by membership in a gym club. A collec- tion of 50 stamps is required for each award and the stamps are pasted in books which are distributed by the Board of Education. The awards are presented at the Recognition program each semester, Eighteen l2A's have earned awards while at Adams. They are Doris Benes and Bernice Zimmerman who merited the fourth and fifth award, a pin and guard, respectively, Olga Aubrecht, Ida Barnett, Pauline Cohen, Lillian Doubrava, Julia Hutek, Bertha Lanzdorf, and Jean Leaf who earned the third award, a chenille A , Evelyn Katz and Elsie Leder who received the second award, an emblem, and Mary Bacik, Gladys Bernstein, Adele Ellman, Miriam Fish, Ann Kowalski, Helen Miras, and Stella Rundle who acquired the first award, a ribbon. Girls may acquire four additional awards: another letter, sixth award, a pin, seventh, a guard, eighth, and a cup, ninth. To promote interest in athletics, the Girls Intramural Council was founded in September, l935. The present officers are Doris Benes, presi- dent, Lillian Silk, vice president, and Lillian Doubrava, secretary. Miss Lillian L. Aitken, teacher of physical education, is the sponsor. Each girls homeroom is represented, the representatives act as captains of the teams and keep the attendance records of the participants who play in intramural games. Before a girl is admitted into a gym class, she is given an opportunity to choose the type of gymnastics in which she wishes to participate. Ad- vanced and beginners tennis, apparatus, sports, folk dancing, exercise, and advanced and beginners clogging classes are offered. The Misses Lillian L. Aitken and Helen Schlager are the teachers of physical education. The swimming class, which meets at the Woodland Bathhouse once a week, is sponsored by Miss Besse Simpson, teacher of English. By a score of I7-7, the senior A girls bowed to the l2B girls basket- ball team on April 6.
