Ihirty-four FOOTBALL---------------------------- IN the spring of 1935 Coach George Kozak began his football experiences at I John Adams by calling a spring training to which 160 boys responded. This turnout forecast that the Coach was going to have a determined, fighting team if not a championship aggregation. This forecast was carried out. Autumn brought with it another Notre Dame product, Ed Caldwell, who assumed the backfield coaching duties. TOLEDO SCOTT 7—ADAMS 0 The Presidents picked no setup to open their season; instead they traveled 120 miles to Toledo and fought the renowned Scott High aggregation to a standstill, only to lose on a fumble early in the game. Captain Hoffman. Goldman, and Karlovec stood out. ADAMS 0—GLENVILLE 0 A downpour of rain did not prevent a large crowd from seeing a Maroon and Gold squad overpower the Tarblooders with 1 5 first downs—but no score. ADAMS 6-EAST TECH 0 Victory over the Carpenters put Coach Kozak in solid with the student body. Maurice Dworkin supplied the spark as he blocked a first period punt which was recovered and converted into a touchdown by Maron Hoff. The speedy end broke his ankle to cast a shadow on the joy of victory. EAST 7—ADAMS 0 Steve Sabath threw two passes and then sped 15 yards for the only score of a hard-fought battle. The line was a stone wall which stopped all other advances of the proteges of Coach Hump Harmony. CATHEDRAL LATIN 26-ADAMS 0 Stunned by the lethal aerial attack of the Catholic boys, the Presidents fell to defeat before a team rated below them by the dopesters. Captain Ray Ioanes shone on the line which played another brilliant game. WEST 18—ADAMS 6 Short bullet-like passes by the '34 Senate champs rolled up an early lead which a desperate onslaught by the Maroon and Gold could not overcome. Sam Goldman, shifted to end. counted the lone touchdown with a buck over the line. ADAMS 9-SOUTH 6 The Southerners fell again before a superior Adams squad which should have rolled up a higher score. Freddy Hancock counted the touchdown in the second quarter and “Army” Armstrong converted on a place kick. Johnny Vanas started the scoring when he blocked Sledz's punt in the first quarter for a safety. CENTRAL 13—ADAMS 0 Dusky Nat Harney swept around the end on an 88-yard run to provide the big thrill as Central defeated a President eleven that couldn't use the breaks given them. Harry Flad supplied the Locals' chief offensive threat. Tackle Earl Karlovec made his last departure from a John Adams grid fray in the arms of his teammates as he was knocked out on a fierce tackle. WEST TECH 7—ADAMS 0 A long, arching pass provided the only score as the Maroon and Gold failed to answer the many knocks of opportunity in the season finale. The class of January '36 gave to the school one of the finest tackles John Adams has ever known in Earl Karlovec. a plugging second stringer in Jack Conway, and a fast end in Maron Hoff. thirty-Hot MAROON and GOLD Top row. left to right: Wcndfl Sarmir. BASKETBALL THE shrill echoes of the referee's whistle resound through a gym packed to capacity with tense spectators. Another basketball game is in progress The resounding sound of the final gun unleashes hilariously happy Adams fans: another Senate game has ended with another Adams victory gained. This year the vision of another Senate basketball championship has inspired the seven returning lettermen from the 1934-35 hardcourt squad to increased activities towards attaining their goal. Despite a serious slump in the earlier part of last year's campaign, the Presidents pooled their efforts and returned in fine style to play a steady game throughout the remainder of the season. T he team composed of Ikie Friedler. and Bert Davidian. both of whom became ineligible for Senate competition at midyear, and Sam Goldman. Wendel Sarmir. Phil Fleishman. Henry Hoffman. Steve Rigo. Charles Cirincione. Stanley Epstein, and John Ostrozovic. was for the most part, the remnant of the Senate basketball championship team of 1933-34. Again, as when a member of the championship aggregation. Goldman played an important role as the main cog in the Maroon and Gold machine. Goldman proved his mettle, when, although he was shifted to a forward at midyear, allowing Epstein to perform at the tip-off position, he was able to lead the Locals as high point man. This year's team boasts a fine array of veteran lettermen and a promising and inspiring group of substitutes. The lettermen of last vear performing now are Goldman. Hoffman. Sarmir, Cirincione, Ostrozovic. Epstein, and Rigo. Graduation and ineligibility will take Epstein and Rigo. leaving two important vacancies to be filled. thirty-six MAROON and GOLD Top tow, ItfI to right: l.dwjid Cox. Louis Cbrrnikoff. Cj ! Br-ihtin. Long. lean bodies uncoil and hurl from the starting holes to thunder down the clean black path of hard-rolled cinders. With a blare that literally rocks the grandstand, the crowd roars a sudden accompaniment to the pistoning legs of the racing track-sters. Drive—power—speed. Blurring speed. Speed culminating in a final burst of energy that sends the hard-driven bodies careening across the line. The race is won! Each year an eager squad of boys experience the above thrill bearing the Maroon and Gold wings of John Adams over the cinder path. Last season the wingmen enjoyed the most successful season since 1929. Although Lawrence Hawkins, captain of the squad, opened his last season with the Adamsmcn with a flash of speed that promised a brilliant season, a leg injury brought a dismal finish to his high school athletic career. However, his teammates went on to complete the campaign in a very satisfactory fashion. Starting with a nucleus of 10 lettermen. Coach Ray E. Knesal welded his squad into an exceptionally well-balanced team which, when put to the test, showed surprising strength in the sprints and proved its caliber by rolling through the year snagging five out of six dual meets dropping the last meet to one of the finest track aggregations in the state, namely. Youngstown Rayen. Figures testify to the success of the 1935 campaign. These sports were introduced for the benefit of the participants, and unfortunately received little or no support from the student body. BASEBALL The Great American Game found its way back into the high school firmament as a student activity. Charles Spennicchia was placed in sole charge and acted as manager and captain. His team played a league schedule and emerged, very successfully, second in the final standings. The only defeat of the season was suffered in a thrilling extra-inning battle with South High, the final count standing 2-1. Victories resulted over Lincoln. 7-4: East Tech. 8-2: and Collinwood, in a wild scoring spree. 18-3. Pitcher Radwanski was the star of the campaign, his underhand deliveries allowing but eleven runs, four of which were unearned. TENNIS Ted W. Ptacek's net squad went through a hard schedule and showed up well, considering the caliber of their opposition. Collinwood and Latin each administered shut-out defeats to the Maroon and Gold racqueteers, while Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights edged out the Locals, both in 3-2 frays. The East Tech and East outfits fell to defeat before the inspired rallies of the Presidents. Brown, Chaikin. Chester. Epstein. Lame. Ryshen. and Zeiger bore the brunt of the season under Chaikin’s managership. INTRAMURALS Intramural activities are gaining an increased prominence in the attention of the pupils. Response to homeroom games showed greater interest both in rooms entered and membership on teams. Touch football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball ran in leagues, while horseshoes, checkers, and ping-pong occupied individual interest. Team sports arc just emerging from the dominance of the room of L. S. Irish, champions in volleyball, baseball, and basketball, the last two for two campaigns. In touch football, however, they were spilled by H. L. Jordan’s homeroom in the finals for the championship. Four members of Irish’s homeroom. Brodsky, Friedberg. Siegler. and Stone, won intramural A’s. amassing over 100 points in these activities. GOLF Golf was started in the spring under the supervision of George Kozak, grid coach. The golfers played on Highland course and visited the course of their opponents. The initial match against Rhodes at Ridgewood resulted in a 15-5 setback for the Presidents. Zdybalski. Wojas. What W does she do?—want to be?—do in spare time?—who and what does she like?—dislike? Certain discoveries reveal that She— (1) is 5'4 tall, weighs 120 lbs. (or are we wrong?), has brown eyes (witcha .cl to tan) and brown hair (tawny dark gold to dark brown). (2) would like to be a secretary (not especially a private secretary) or a stenographer and by all means a faithful wife. In her bravest moments she would like to be an air hostess. (3) likes Miss Lee. Mr. Knesal (who's this guy Gable?), and Miss Knirk in particular, and entire faculty and administration in general. (4) does any number of things in leisure time. Dancing (with good partners), reading and making scrapbooks (who knows what she puts into them?), and sometimes eating homemade pies (watch your complexion) are her chief avocations. (She's now taking up knitting.) (5) reads an occasional love story and really likes Anthony Adverse (How long does it take?). Little Women, and David Copperfield. (6) dislikes sissies, chiselcrs. smoking, high hats, noisy people, and walking home just because the car ran out of “gas. AVERAGE BOY GRAD W HAT is the average January 1936. John Adams boy graduate like? What he jo?—want to be?—do in spare time?—who and what docs he like?—dislike? According to statistics and popular acclaim He— (1) is 5'8 tall—weighs 140 lbs.—has brown hair (every shade from dishwater blonde to fiery red) and gray eyes (baby blue to cat's eye green). (2) would like to be most of all a business man (salesman to a big business man) or an engineer (from railroad to a civil engineer), or possibly a tradesman. (3) has a deep regard for the faculty but expresses a special liking for Messrs. Knesal. Robinson, and Reynolds, and Miss Lee. (4) finds plenty to do in his spare time. Sports occupy first place in his interests, collecting everything from chewing gum wrappers to valuable coins (especially stamps), running a close second, and he likes to dance, but he admits he isn't very good. (5) likes to read all kinds of books (cook book to encyclopedia), but particularly The Count of Monte Cristo. Call of the Wild, and On the Bottom. When he is feeling particularly adventurous or heroic, he occasionally absorbs the contents of a thrilling detective or a Wild West magazine. (6) dislikes doggers, yes-men. getting up, gossips, certain vegetables, and girls who give five dollars worth of punishment to a penny stick of gum. Mty-thrtt MAROON and GOLD CLASS PROPHECY SCIENCE has done wonderful things in the last century, but the achievements of the Wright brothers. Marconi, and Edison will fade into insignificance if the invention of Dan Davies proves a success. For the last year he has been working on a super Z-ray which will make it possible to look into the future twenty years and see people all over the world at the turn of a dial. Today is the day when this marvelous creation will be shown to the public. We've all been invited to the demonstration, so put on your overcoats. pull on your galoshes, and get going. We now find ourselves in a dingy, ill-lighted room. The only furnishings are a few chairs and a large screen surrounded by all types of strange paraphernalia. Mr. Davies greets us smilingly. “Everything is ready. he tells us. “we shall begin. He turns a dial and a familiar looking room appears upon the screen.—Of course, it's the Journal room. Twenty years and the same papers still litter the desks. But what's this? The teacher—of all people —Lenny Hendricks. She is speaking rather loudly to a familiar-looking person. Let’s listen. “Now listen to me. Aloysius Skalnik. I am a very patient person, but enough is enough. Your father signed up for that story twenty years ago. and you haven't turned it in yet. The scene fades and a large music hall jammed with people appears on the screen. As the curtains part we find Lois Abell. Elmer Mazanec. and George Rebar playing in the symphony orchestra. The maestro. Alex Szuhay. steps from the wings, and the orchestra plays Carl Meyer's latest composition. As the last strains of the music die. Elsie Tucek, now a prima donna of the Metropolitan Opera Company, renders an aria from Carmen. Among the applauding audience we notice Charles Prasek. Edith Sacks. Evelyn Victor. Leola Kor-bel. and Yaro Haida. Grace Buto, N.B.C. news commentator, now appears on the screen to tell us of the latest happenings of 1956. Let’s lend an ear. “Well, folks, Walter Shcgda. playboy, screen-lover, and America's number one Beau Brummel. has gone and done it again. He was granted his sixth divorce in the last three years. 'Wally' announced that he does not contemplate matrimony again for at least three weeks. Jeanette Haas, that remarkable female athlete, astonished sporting circles yesterday when she completed the first non-stop swim from New York to Paris. On her arrival in Paris she said, 'If my feet weren't wet. I’d swim back home for dinner.' Jack Conway, humorist extraordinary, published his latest book this afternoon, and at the same time announced that he had been sued in forty-six states, two territories, and the District of Columbia. for plagiarism in connection with his last book. The political world was shocked by Herbert Stickney's announcement that he could not accept the nomination for the presidency, as he had sold his chance to be president to David Wilson for 'two-bits' back in 1936. That's enough of that. Let's turn the dial and see if we can get something else. Ah—Public Square. Look, there's Ruth Barrett talking up the proletarian revolution, while two sleeping tramps, a cop. and three pigeons look on. “Comrades and fellow workers. I ask you. is it right that the mayor should buy a new necktie while we don't even have fifty cents for a tall glass of tomato juice, a cup of coffee, two slices of melba toast slightly browned on one side, and a double order of bacon and eggs? Phooey. down with the mayor, down with neckties, down with capitalism, down with fascism, down with communism, down with down!” fifty four MAROON and GOLD CLASS PROPHECY (Continued) Enough with our propaganda slinging friend. Let's tune in on city hall and see what we can see. A cabinet meeting—I hope we re not intruding. Look, there's Mayor Elmer Rensel, and Safety Director Marshall MacMeans. and Law Director Ed Kotecki. Who’s that in the corner? Why. it's Chief-of-Police Stanley Epstein talking with the political boss. Joe Ciesielski. I wonder if we can find anyone we know out on Euclid Avenue. There's Dean Heyduk. famous designer of men's clothes, dressed in the latest fashion of the day—he is wearing a pea-green suit with a yellow overcheck: his shirt is of light pink satin with a black candy stripe, set off by a brown buckskin necktie: his shoes are of light green alligator skin. Also strolling down the avenue are Eugene Crawford, James Perrine, Lillian Ney, Celia Okla. William Staron. and Beryl Shapiro. Let’s tune in on the Hanna theater. The play is Cigarette Alley starring Marvin Saltzman. The manager of the theater is Joe Ycrman. Others featured in the play arc Esther Gildenhorn. Alex Bohovic. and Celia Spisak. Hey. Arnie Cooper, get away from there.—bang! Now you’ve gone and blown out a tube. Well, we'll have to leave our friends of the future for the time being with the hope that whatever the future does bring, the memories of the times we had at John Adams will enhance the successes and make the defeats less hard to bear. 300 STRONG We’re leaving now. 300 strong. 300 to join the worldly throng. Paths which for so long have crossed. Will cross no more. Together we’ve played, together we’ve fought. And many have been the lessons taught. Friends who led us on our way. Will lead no more. Together we’ve searched for knowledge here. Together we’ve planned our life’s career. Thoughts which for so long have merged. Will merge no more. We’re leaving now. 300 strong. 300 to join the worldly throng. But though our school days now are done. Adams’ memories will make us one.
