VARSITY TENNIS ALT HOUGH tennis is as yet a comparatively new sport in varsity athletics at John Adams, the local racquetcers have established an enviable record on the city clay courts in the past few years of interscholastic competition. Under the skillful tutelage of Coach Ted W Ptacck. the present squad, strengthened by the return of three match-winning lettermen. shows good promise of maintaining John Adams' prominence among the city's netters. by a strong possibility of capturing the eastern division championship. All the home games for the season will be played at Woodland Hills Park against schools in eastern Cleveland and its suburbs, according to the schedule made by the Cleveland Interscholastic Tennis Association. of which the former captain and present manager of the local team. William Chaikin, is vice president. Positions on the team are gained by competitive ladder elimination. each man receiving a ranking ranging from one to seven. The seventh man is open to all challengers at any time and if defeated he must relinquish his position to his vanquisher. Further rise on the ladder can be made by defeating the player whose ranking is just one above.

VARSITY TRACK FROM the beginning of time men have enjoyed the pure wholesome satisfaction of a race well run. the pleasure of individual competition, and the invigorating urge for gracefulness, for speed, for sturdy feats of strength and endurance. T o encourage vouth to participate in the manly sport of running and jumping, the ancient Greeks inaugurated the Olympiads, religious feasts which placed track forever in the annals of history. Today, over two thousand seven hundred years since the first Olympiad. John Adams High School is represented by a track squad that honors the same ideals of sportsmanship. Centering on a nucleus of 12 lettermen. Coach R. E. Knesal has a well-balanced track squad, which is one of the top-notch running machines in the city for the spring of 1935. In spite of the poor showing at the indoor C. A. C. meet, due to lack of practice, the present team shows enough lorm to more than duplicate the successful season of 1934. when John Adams copped 3 out of 5 dual meets. The class of ‘35 takes off its hat to William A. Slyh. faculty manager, who has made possible the season pass, enabling every pupil in John Adams to witness every track meet on the schedule for a cost of little more than one cent per meet , thus making track, the oldest of all sports, self-supporting—a feat of which few schools in Greater Cleveland can boast. turty-cighi
