Schlumpf, Principal Volume 40, Number 1 June, 1971 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Greetings to you, the first graduating class in the decade of the 70's! The decade of the 70's - in the twentieth century - may well come to be known as the age of rapid social and political change. It was in the decade of the 70's - back in the eighteenth century -that a great political change in the form of the American Revolution led to the birth of our country. Most of us tend to think of 1776 as being far back in the distant past, yet it is startling to realize that the relatively short 40 year exist- ence of John Adams High School spans a period that represents more than one out of every five years of our national life. In your youthful eighteen years or so you have already personally lived through nearly one out of ten years in which the United States of America grew from colonial status to become the greatest and most powerful nation on the face of the earth. The changes which brought our nation and our society to the state in which we find it as we enter the 70's of the twentieth century are not at an end. In fact, it appears that they are accelerating. President Nixon, in his state of the Union Message to Congress, has called for a new, but peaceful, American Revolution. The dreams of political and social equality and of equal economic and educational opportunity that were born in the first American Revolution have not yet been fully realized for all our citizens, but their achievement may be in sight in the years just ahead. Other problems, not existing or perhaps not recognized during our earlier history, will face society and demand solutions involving change in the immediate future. Our.expanding population must cause us to re-examine the once accepted notion that we are blessed with limitless capacity for growth. Our profligate use of natural resources that we once thought were boundless in supply must change in the face of our new understanding of serious ecological and pollution problems. The graduates of the 70's will have a major voice in shaping the society of the 70's3 some would even say that it will be their role to make the changes that will prevent civilization's destruction. Our Supreme Court, in ruling that eighteen-year-olds should have the right to vote in national elections, has again asserted the right to have those who would be affected by change participate in the directing of such change. The respon- sibility for doing so is an awesome one, and l wish you well in carrying it out. It has been the privilege of the faculty of John Adams High School to try to provide you with some help and direction for taking on the great responsibility you will face. Back in the days when l was a teacher of mathe- matics, I often thought of change in terms of the two great mathematical classifications of quantities with respect to change: variables and constants. I was impressed by the fact that the solution of an equation for the value of a variable is really determined by the constants involved in it. So it probably is in areas other than mathematics. The constants in your education have been the skills and the attitudes and interests that we have tried to help you build during your years here. May you use them well in seeking solutions for the variables involved in the new problems that will affect you in the decades ahead. Lester W. U-Om MW' 3025 -L-2 IWKSOS On December 18, 1970, the Afro-American Cultural Society put on a performance at Richmond Hil High School called People To People, which consisted of dancing, singing, short skits, instrumentals ani poetry reading. The performance was geared to the idea of white students coming to see what blacknes is all about. For all those John Adams students who were unfortunate in missing this excellent show, th Clipper gives you pictures and poetry from People To People. People To People If we do not feel the chain, When it works another's pain, Are we not base slaves indeed, Slaves unworthy to be freed? Step down, white America, let the black poet speak! Must I die, to feel the earth? Must I fly, to smell the air? Must I grow fins, to swim to sea? Must I Be White To Live In This Humanity! Well, I didn't lay down and die, and I felt the earth. I didn't sprout wings and fly, and l smelt the air. I didn't grow fins, and I swam to sea. So black is all l'm gonna be! Times are changing as we can see, They have a new math inthe third degree. White plus White equals one, one race group in size. Blue plus Black equals none, we are not recognized. This is a new math taught to us, and this too is the sum: Black and Black equals nothing, But White and White equals one. We being black can't dig this way and times them both by three, And found if the world tried hard enough Together it would equal unity. But the Society said this could not be If hate remained the hero And fighting continued Soon black and white would equal zero. The cold and desolation of winter And the warmth and splendor of spring Has hardened my mind and turned it to steel. Power To The People. THE EDITORS' DILEMMA When we were offered the positions of editors of the Clipper, we might not have accepted, had we known then what we know now. The job that had appeared so easy to us as staff members loomed before us, a col- lossal challenge. Perhaps Adams' greatest mystery is the Clipper. No one seems very certain as to who or what produces it, and where this process occurs. Many a distraught student has learned that Miss Lehrman is not in Room 319a sixth period, that is when our clandestine group meets. The Campus, the school newspaper, so fre- quently confused with the Clipper, must also contend with students looking for Dr. Gallagher, our faculty adviser. lf you were fortunate enough to stumble into our room, the semblance of normality probably fooled you: an average bunch of John Adams kids, eating yogurt, playing basketball with a tinfoil ball, sleeping and doing homework. But that was all a disguise, we were actually compiling your Clipper, the book that appears yearly, without appreciation or extra notice. lt is paid for as part of Senior Dues and you might even hold on toit for a longtime to cherish fond for not so fondj memories. You were hopefully warned to be careful when entering the office, you might have been mistaken for a prospective Clipper staff member and you would have been inducted immediately. Ourstaff this year was the smallest in yearbook history. We had never attempted to become effete snobs, although appearances may have deemed that true. Occasionally, a poem or short story found its way into our envelope of literary creations. On these days, joyous celebration resulted. After careful consideration, it hurt us deeply to place the rejection -3- on the paper, which we so often had to do. Meeting publisher deadlines was our greatest challenge. The first one was December 7 and the chaos that ensued the bombing of Pearl Harbor was small compared to the excitement that occurred as we rushed to be ready to hand the yearbook publisher representative the first required thirty-two pages of copy. We were frantic. We were running late with the senior photograph program, which mea nt a delay in receiving the year- books. Would 1971 Adams graduates have to pick up their yearbooks next September? We were destined to be the first editors in Adams 'history to allow such a catastrophe to occur? We all wondered. Ten days later, however, we were ready with not only thirty pages, but sixty-four pages -the entire graduate section. The staff and we had done it. Sighs of relief were followed by celebration, as we gorged ourselves on cottage cheese and roast beef heroes. We were confident that everything from then on was to be just fine. After months of toil, cooperation, hair-pulling and blood, sweat, and tears, we present you with the completed Clipper. Of course, it's not entirely what we had planned, censorship, lack of money, time and possibility caused ideas to fizzle. We tried our best for you. Good luck! I remember: The beautiful moments Of triumph, And the uglier ones Of defeat. I remember, My battle - My attempts to be more Than just another name, Scratched into a desk, More than just another name, On the label of a text book: But like most others, l've failed - I have slipped through The revolving doors, Unnoticed. SI'- No longer imprisoned In the grim, gray walls Of the institution, Turning my back on the familiar I plant both feet Beyond its boundaries - Never to return. 114 Exciting, I extend thanks To all who have Helped me in my struggle, To all, who've participated In molding, the finished product Nervous, but anxious To grasp the loose ends And shape them Into my life, I enter a new world. :lr As this next chapter begins, I know l'm a better And different person, A more mature being, Ready to accept joy, sorrow, Success and failure, Ready to experience life. Courageously and silently the mass of naked bones continues to stand together, Bending each way, as if complying with its enemies, But then springing up to face them again. How does this remnant of life defy the elements of death? ' What compels it to stand proudly while its foes cause it to waste away? t The battle rages on. To his right and left he could see solid lines of irregular objects, one line white, and other black. Timorouslyi he ventured upon the great expanse, unaware of two lines slowly advancing towad the center of the plain. He heard an unfamiliar sound behind him and whirled about to be confronted by an enormous black horse towering far above him. Minutes seemed to stretch into- hours as they sta red at each oth- er. Finally, the glorious stallion moved onjdestroying its beauty by running erratically, three steps at a time as flame. Turning back to the now advancing lines, his attention was riveted to an ivory castle, suddenly a mere yard away. The black steed reappeared without warning and leaped upon the castle in all its splendor.
