eTliecTs To several handy causes, ranging Trom The diTTiculTy oT Travel- ling To The homes oT poTenTial Triends, To The misundersTanding on The parT oT her TaTher. NoT once did she consider The TacT +ha+ she was looking aT The world Through a micro- scope - analyzing, diTierenTiaTing, buT never being. BeTore you read TurTher liT you have venTured To come This Tarl be assured ThaT alThough Jeanne Frank- lin is TwenTy-Tive per-cenT girl and sevenTy-Tive per cenT complex she is human. And being human, she soon reached The poinT where cold, cal- culable TacTs could no longer saTisTy her conTused mind. One day, aTTer having noTiced a creeping sTaTe oT indiTierence in Jeanne, her Teacher lwho had iusT become The EasTern lv1en's champion Tor evicTing elderly ladiesl suggesTed To her parenTs ThaT perhaps an inTormal chaT wiTh a psy- chiaTrisT Triend oT his mighT be very helpTul. And so wiTh a skepTical convicTion and an uncerTain hand, Jeanne open- ed The door and sTepped inTo The oTTice oT Dr. Daniel NorThrop, DocTor oT PsychiaTry. Miss Franklin, l presume, The genTle yeT auThoriTaTive voice oT Dr. NorThrop spoke. Jeanne had no idea whaT To expecT and so was neiTher shocked nor indiTTerenT To The ap- pearance oT Dr. NorThrop. l-le was a small, prim man wiTh whife hair swirl- ing abouT his head like an ArcTic snowsTorm. l'm very glad To meeT you Doc- Tor, was Jeanne's unsTeady reply. Now Then, conTinued The DocTor, my Triend Tells me someThing is on your mind. Perhaps if you Tell me abouT iT l'll be able To help you. By This Time Jeanne was lying on a com- TorTable couch and Dr. NorThrop had pad and pencil in hand. Really DocTor, There's noThing wrong, I . . . Aha, inTerrupTed The DocTor, ThaT's The TirsT clue To your prob- lem. As he said This, Dr. NorThrop quickly ioTTed someThing in his noTe- book and Then looked up To Tind a perplexed look on Jeanne's Tace. DocTor, l'm aTraid l don'T under- sTand, she guesTioned. Well, conTinued The DocTor, you say There's noThing wrong wiTh you, buf iT is an esTablished TacT ThaT There is deTiniTely someThing wrong wiTh everyone, and ThereTore iT a person says ThaT noThing is wrong, well Then, There is someThing wrong wiTh ThaT person. lT is only The people who admiT ThaT There is someThing wrong wiTh Them ThaT have noThing wrong wiTh Them. l-lowever if There is noThing wrong wiTh a person and ThaT person conTinually Tries To con- vince oThers ThaT There is someThing wrong wiTh him, Then There is some- Thing very deTiniTely wrong wiTh ThaT person. ls ThaT clear? Jeanne sTared blankly aT The Doc- Tor wiThouT saying a word. No maTTer, conTinued The Doc- Tor, iT's iusT someThing ThaT helps us make a living. BuT To conTinue, did your moTher ever lock you in The closeT? The absoluTe earnesTness in which The guesTion was asked shocked Jeanne. OT course noT, she replied. !5xha, nodded The DocTor, an abnormal home liTe. Really DocTor, l Think This is all very silly. Suppose l were To ask you if your moTher locked you in The closeT. WhaT would you say? Miss Franklin, replied The Doc- Tor angrily, wheTher or noT my moTher locked me in The closeT is irrelevanT. IT is you we are discussing. BuT iT you musT know, he conTinued in a soTTer voice, my moTher never cared abouT me ThaT much To spend Time locking me in The panTry7 we were a poor Tamily, he explained, and we couldn'T aTTord a closeT. By now Jeanne was inTrigued by This Tunny liTTle man. Come now, she said, every moTher loves her children, she . . . BeTore she could Tinish The senTence, lConTinued on Page 92l I7 if YQ? DAVID NORRIS When Jeanne smiled, iT looked like The smile oT an average Teenager. When she laughed, her iubilanT voice was iusT as gay as any oTher sixTeen year old girl. BuT Jeanne wasn'T as gay and by no means was she aver- age. For Jeanne was diTTerenT, or so she ThoughT. She had problems- She could menTion neuroses ThaT even Freud hadn'T heard oT. l-ler Teacher wasn'T really a Teacher, buT a secreT agenT senT by some evil Torce To spy on her and reporT his observaTions To a horrible man who wore a black cape and who delighTed in evicTing elderly ladies inTo The cold, cold snow. l-ler TaTher was in realiTy a cruel TaskmasTer whose sole purpose on earTh was To oppress her by demand- ing perTecTion Trom her. The cause oT This line oT Thinking lay direcTly be- hind her misleading smile and a Tew inches higher. While oThers used Their brains To hope and To haTe and To love, Jeanne Franklin devoTed her mind exclusively To The TabricaTion oT her closely conTined, peTal-Thin world. Feeling ThaT she was under consTanT surveillance, Jeanne ineviT- ably sTrove Tor The perTecTion she ThoughT was demanded Tor her. She worked Teverishly Tor excellence-To sTave oTT her Teacher, To saTisTy her TaTher. The unavoidable resulT was soon in coming. lnsTead oT being as gay and Trivolous as any oTher young, viva- I 6 li X J-9 a',: aa: V Q al f o I., .-- fa ' , f,,, 2 ':',,Z.. l fff- , 5.1. 2 fijl Z f if,-,A-eff cious Venus, she became criTical oT people her own age and looked down on many oT Them as merely imma- Ture. DespiTe The TacT ThaT she was really guiTe sensiTive and Teminine. Jeanne regarded The emoTions as guiTe deceiving and even Treacher- ous as Tar as dealings wiTh The oppo- siTe sex were concerned. l-lowever, These belieTs and Tears were well hid- den behind a cleverly consTrucTed Tacade oT gay shopping sprees and equally gay daTes. OuTwardly, Jeanne was everyThing a girl her age could hope To beg inTelligenT, Tairly popular, a good dancer and noT Too diTTiculT To resT one's eyes upon. lnTrospecTively, however, she could noT undersTand how a girl such as BeTTy, Tor example, her only close Triend, could be hurT again and again in her conTinuous love liTe. She un- doubTedly didn'T Teel, as perhaps BeTTy unknowingly did, ThaT more Than halT The pleasure oT eaTing The honey is in being sTung To geT iT. Jeanne Franklin, she would Tell herselT, you won'T be like BeTTy, quick To love and easily hurT. And so wiTh a well-planned, Thoroughly prepared scripT, Jeanne Franklin seT pin To play her role on The sTage oT 1 e. As Time wenT by, Jeanne Tound ThaT she had relaTively Tew Triends and never seemed To geT as much enioymenT ouT oT liTe as Those around her. She blandly aTTribuTed These
